To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE WV. GRIMINGER,
, a citizen of the United States, residing at Cuyahoga Falls, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pliers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in pliers, and the object of the invention is to provide pliers with mechanism for locking the jaws against being moved to their open position after engaging an article, and further provided with mechanism for releas' ing the locking mechanism to permit releasing the jaws from the object.
lVith the foregoing and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts constituting the invention, to be hereinafter specifically described and illus trated in the accompanying drawings which form a part hereof wherein is shown the preferred embodiment of the invention, but
it is to be understood that changes, varia-' tions and modifications can be resorted to which come within the scope of the matter hereinafter claimed.
In the drawings in which similar reference numerals indicate like parts in the different figures, Figure 1, is a view inside elevation of pliers embodying this invention; Fig. 2, is a plan view of the device shown in Fig. 1; Fig. 3, is a longitudinal, central sectional view of a portion of one member of the device taken approximately on line 3 of Fig. 2, showing the locking mechanism in its inoperative position; and Fig. 4, is a view similar to Fig. 3 showing the device in its locked position.
The device embodies two coacting members 1 and 2 pivotally united by a pin 3. The member 2 comprises a jaw 4 at one end and a handle 5 at the pposite end. The member 1 comprises a, jaw 6 cooperating with jaw 4 and a handle at the opposite end denominated by the numeral 7 The general formation of the pliers forming the subjectmatter of this invention including the jaws and handles are of conventional. type and a further description of their general shape is believed to be unnecessary.
In the handle 5 of the member 2 is an elongated recess 8 and the portions of the handle on one side of the recess provide a wall 9 and on the opposite side a wall 10. Extending through both walls 9 and 10 are two slots 11 and 12, both of which extend longitudinally of the handle 5. In the floor of the recess 8 is a communicating recess 11 for a purpose to be later described and extending downwardly through the floor of the recess 8 is a slot 12. In one end wall of the recess 8 is a recess 13 constitutmg a seat fora purpose to be later described. Hounted to move shuttle-fashion in the recess 8 is a carrier 14, less in length than the recess 8 and of the proper size to fit therein. The vertical thickness of the carrier 14 is such that the upper face will be approximately flush with the upper face of the handle 5, andextending through the front end of the member 14 is a pin 15 the ends of which project into the slots 11 for guiding and holding member 14 from being unintentionally removed from the recess 8. The carrier 14 is provided with a longitudinally extending recess 16 across which extends a bar 17v formed integrally with the member 14 and in the upper face of this bar 17 is a recess 18 constituting a seat for a purpose to be later described. The rear face of the carrier 14 is provided with a recess 19 in alinement with recess 13 and in these two recesses is seated a spring 20. On the upper face of the carrier 14 is a stud 21 constituting a thumb grasp. Extending transversely of the carrier 14 near the rear end thereof is a pin .22 which projects through the slots 12 and is provided at its ends with heads 23, the pin 22 in the slots 12 serving to prevent upward movement of the carrier 14. Extending between the side walls of the carrier 14 and across the recess 16 is a pin 24, pivotally mounted on which is a latch 25 the front under face of which is provided with a recess 26 constituting a seat for a coiled spring 27 the opposite end of which is seated in the recess 18,.and the normal tendency of this spring is to hold the forward end of the latch 25 in its upper position. The lower rear face of the latch 25 is provided with a downturned finger 28 arranged in longitudinal alinement with the recess 11 and fashioned to engage therein for constituting a lock to prevent forward movement of the carrier 14 when the latch is in its operative position as shown in Fig. 3.
Pivotally mounted in a suitable slot in the handle 7 of the member 1, by means of a pin 29, is a curved arm 30 the forward face'of which is provided with teeth 31. The arm 30 is adapted to project through the slot 12 The operation of the device is as follower The aws 4 and 6 are separated sufliciently to grasp an object or article by separating the handles 5 and 7. As the handles 5 and 7 are forced toward each other to clamp the aws 4 and 6 on the object the operator, usually employing his thumb forces the carrier 14 forward by means of the stud 21, and he "may also press downwardly on the catch 25 which depresses the forward end thereof thereby raising the finger 28 out of the recess 11, as shown in Fig. 4, which causes the cross-bar 17 to oscillate the toothed arm '30 forwardly to bring the teeth 31 into engagement with wall of the handle 5 which forms thefioor ofthe recess 8 as clearly shown in Fig.4. lVhen in this position the spring 20 holds the carrier in its'forward or operative position and the pressure which is usu ally applied on the handles 5 and? to insure a gripping engagement ofthe jaws 4 and 6 on the object is thereby rendered unnecessary. VVhenit is desired to release the grip I of the jaws 4 and 6 on the object the operator shifts the carrierf14 by means of the head 28 of the pin 22 rearwardly, overcoming the forceof the spring 20 and thereby shifts 001210: of this patent may be obtained for the carrier 14 rearwardly allowing the finger 28 to rlde over the lower fioor surface oftherecess and engage in the recess 11.
The engagement of the finger 28 with the side wall of the recess 11 is suflicient to hold the carrier 14 from being forced forward by the spring 20. As the carrier 14 is shifted rearwardly the forward portion 32 of the carrier 14 will engage the teeth 31 and oscillate the arm 30 rearwardly to withdraw the teeth 31 from their engagement with the member 5.
I claim 1. Pliers comprising complementary members pivotally united, each of said members having a jaw at one end and a handle at the opposite end, the handle of one member provided with an elongated recess and a slot communicating therewith, a toothed arm' pivotally connected with the handle of the other member and extending through the said slot and recess, a shiftable carrier positioned in said recess, means for normally shifting said carrier in one direction for causing engagement of the teeth on said arm with the handle provided with said carrier, and a catch on said carrier adapted to hold said carrier in its inoperative position.

Pliers comprising complementary, coacting, pivotally connected members, one of which is provided with a slot, a toothed arm extending through said slot and pivotally connected with the other member and arranged to interengage with said first mem ber for locking said members in a determi nate position, and longitudinally shiftable means in said slot for shifting said arm into and out of operative relation with said first member. r

4. Pliers comprising complementary, co-o acting,pivotally connected members, one of provided with a slot capable of registration with the slot in said first member, anarm having a toothed edge extending through said slots and pivotally connected with the other member and arranged to be moved into and out of operative engagement with said first member by said carrier, and a catch on said carrier interengaging with the said first member for holding said carrier and arm in their inoperative positions.
5. Pliers comprising complementary, coacting, pivotally connected members, one of which is provided with a longitudinally extending recess and an intersecting slot, the carrier shiftably mounted in said recess and provided with a slot capable of registration with the slot in said first member, and a spring for forcing said carrier and arm toward their operative position, an arm having a toothed edge extending through said slots and pivotally connected with the other member and arranged to be moved into and out of operative engagement with said first member by said carrier, and a catch on said carrier interengaging with the said first member for holding said carrier andarm in GEORGE w.
