SALES-BOOK.
Application filed June 13, 1912.
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN D. A. JoiiNsoN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Omaha, in the county of Douglas and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sales-Books, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a sales book and the object thereof is to provide a book particularly suitable for obbers, manufacturers and the like who have agents or representatives for the sale of their goods in different States or in different localities. I
My sales book, which is preferably of the loose-leaf type, is particularly characterized by the binding therein of one or more thick pages or leaves of suitable material, preferably soft wood, in order that thumb tacks or the like may be driven therein, such leaves having a raised margin, thereby providing a recessed portion adapted to receive a map or the like of the locality in question and also adapted to prevent any interference or contact with the heads of the thumb tacks. In addition to these particular leaves I employ ordinary leaves of paper properly ruled and indexed in order that a record may be kept by the jobbers of the sales of any particular district during any period of time.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of my sales book opened out to expose two thick leaves together showing a map of the State of Michigan; Fig. 2 a bottom edge view of the book; Fig; 3 a cross section of the book but on a larger scale than in Fig. 2; Fig. 4 a plan view of the book opened up to expose one of the regular paper leaves; Fig. 5 a detail view of one of the thick pages or leaves; Fig. 6 a perspective of one of the thumb tacks and Fig. 7 a detail of a fastener.
Referring to the present embodiment of my invention the book is in the present instance and by preference of the loose-leaf type but as this is not essential and as the particular loose-leaf mechanism is likewise immaterial, the same is not illustrated in detail and will not be described specifically.
My sales book comprises the front and back covers 1 and 2 respectively, connecting back portion 1, together with the pages or leaves therein now to be described. Within the book is suitably bound one or more thick leaves 3 which, in the present instance, are six in number, three at the front and three at the back of the book. lar leaves neXt adjacent the covers of the book are preferably hinged in suitable manner as by the strips 4. to the inner face of said covers near their outer longitudinal edges and the inner edges of such leaves are held to the covers in suitable manner, as by means of the ball and socket fastener indicated at 5. The remainder of the leaves 3 are arranged in pairs in view of the fact that I have herein preferred to use them conjointly for the mounting of a map of the particular locality to which the book is applicable. In the present instance, the map is that of the State of Michigan, as show in Fig. 1, substantially one-half being mounted upon one of the thick leaves and the other half upon the companion leaf so that when the book is opened out as illustrated in Fig. 1, the entire map is exposed. Likewise the first described. leaves 3 may be supplied with a map. As clearly shown in Figs. 1 and 8 the outer side edge and the top and bottom edges indicated at 3 are raised thereby leaving a recessed portion upon which the map described is mounted or secured in suitable manner and for a pun pose hereinafter made apparent. Each of these innermost thick leaves has a flexible strip 6 whichis secured to a binding strip 7 through which pass the bands 8 of the loose leaf mechanism. Between these binding strips 7 are arranged spacing .trips 9. While I have herein shown and described a plurality of these thick leaves, it will he understood that, so far as my invention in its broader aspect is concerned, a single leaf altogether or a single leaf at each end of the book may be employed. The thick leaves at the end of the book are herein illustrated and embodied in the book as showing the manner in which the capacity of the book, as regards additional territory than that illustrated in Fig. 1 for instance, may be increased. of each has raised margins on both faces so that it may cooperate with the opposing faces of the other two leaves.
My book also contains a series of pages or leaves of the usual character of paper as in dicated at 10, such leaves being indexed on their margin from A to Z, as shown in Fig. 4. The particular leaf exposed in Fig. tk is the uppermost one or A-leaf and thesame is representative of the ruling of all of the leaves. As shown, each leaf represents the different towns or places of agency in alpha- By preference the middle leaf 3 betical order, the top leaf A containing all the towns beginning with the letter A in the State of Michigan where any agency is established. The first column 10 is adapted to show the population and the second column 10 to contain the name of the town or city. The next column 10 is adapted to contain the name of the agent and the next the salesman, and the next five columns 10 are adapted to indicate the number of sales of articles or machines during any particular year. The next twelve columns 10 are adapted to contain the number of sales made in the twelve months of the year and the last column 10 the total thereof. As a re sult the manufacturer, jobber or sales manager can tell at a glance, with respect to any city or salesman the number of sales being made at any particular time and can ascertain whether any particular locality or salesman is increasing or running behind in sales. It will be understood that these paper leaves are bound in the book in the same manner as the thick leaves but this is not essential.
The purpose of having the thick leaves is to permit of the use of thumb tacks such as indicated at 11, Figs. 1, 3 and 6, which are used by the sales manager, manufacturer or jobber for indicating on the map the particular cities or towns which are increasing or running behind in sales, thereby furnishing a guide as to the places where stimulating letters to the salesmen or agents should be sent and also indicating at a glance whether the falling off of sales is due to general conditions or to local conditions. By having the raised margin 3 on these thick leaves the heads of the thumb tacks cannot come in contact with any part of the book and therefore remain undisturbed. In practice I prefer to press the tacks into the map at one side of the cities or towns and at the same time take advantage of the usual triangular slots 11 of the tacks by having them point to the cities or towns which they indicate. The thick leaves at the back end of the book may be employed to increase the capacity of such book and the same may be employed in connection with the front set of leaves or they may be used as an individual or separate set.
I claim:
1. A sales book comprising, in combination with the cover, relatively thin paper leaves, and a relatively thick leaf adapted to receive thumb tacks and in which the shafts of the tacks may be fully embedded.
2. A sales book comprising, in combination with the cover, relatively thin leaves, and a relatively thick leaf having a depressed central surface adapted to receive thumb tacks and in which the shafts of the tacks may be fully embedded.
3. A sales book comprising, in combination with the cover leaves, and a board leaf adapted to receive thumb tacks and in which the shafts of the tacks may be fully embedded, said board leaf having raised marginal edges to compensate for the thickness of the heads of the tacks.
4. A sales book comprising, in combination with the cover, paper leaves indexed according to towns or cities written thereon, and a thickened leaf adapted to receive a map showing the towns or cities indexed, said thickened leaf being pervious to receive thumb tacks particularly designating one or more of the towns or cities.
5. A sales book comprising, in combina tion with the cover, a plurality of relatively thin leaves mounted in thecover, and a plurality of relatively thick leaves disposed between said thin leaves and the cover, the outermost of said thick leaves being hinged to the cover adjacent its outer edge to open 7. A sales book comprising, in combina- 9 tion with the cover, a plurality ofrelatively thin leaves mounted in the cover, and a plurality of relatively thick tween said thin leaves and the cover, a strip 4 for connecting the outer end of the outermost of said thick leaves to the cover, and ball and socket means for detachably connecting the inner end thereof to the cover.
