Description

E. w. CARNES. TRIPLE FHSICTION SEAT WALL CAN.
A'PPLILCATI'OKN FILEUOCT. 19. $912.

EDWARD We CARNES, OF CHICAGO, LLINOES, ASSXG-NGE 'TG1 AMERGAN COMPANY, F NEW YORK, N. Y., A COBPGBATION GF JERSEY.-
Application filed October i9, 1912. Serial No. 726,594.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, EDWARD W. CARNS a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of Gookand State of lllinois, have invented a new and useful lm-l provenient in Triple-Friction-Seat Wall- Cans, of which the following is a speciication. v
This invention relates to a triple friction seat wall can and it consists in a triple fric- Y tion seat closure made in a peculiar rnanner marked 10, and is of the ordinary construction of sheet metal cans of the so called s'anitary type, the can top being of .the annular wide-mouthed sort and made with a flange 11, to interfold or double seam with the up- -per edge of the body as shown. Within this interfolded liange the annu1ar can top 1s formed with a downwardly projecting wall,
12, itting snugly within the wall of the can body. This vertical wall 12 is stiffened by the horizontal .ring 13 from the inner edge of which rises the wall H terminating in the substantially horizontal stifening ring 15,
from the inner edge of which dependsla sec- L ond wall 16 terminating below 1n the second substantially horizontal stifening ring 17 from the inner edgeof which rises a short freev edge 18. The coniguration of the can top, it will be seen, therefore may be said to consist, of four substantially vertical walls, the inner one of which 'has afree edge, a
horizontal flange for double seaming with the can body and three horizontal stiifening rings. The countering .covers19, adapted to fit upon this configuration 1s made with the horizontal stiifening plate or part 2 O,.frotn the outer edge of which depends the wall 2 1, terminating below inthe horizontal strengthening ring 22, from the' outer edge of which ring rises 'the wall 23, terminating above in the horizontal strengthening .ring 24 from the outer edge of which depends the free edge`25. .Between the ring 24 and the free' edge 25 the corner is preferably double to form an annular projection 26 to serve as a shoulder against which the end of a lever for prying open the can by lifting the cover on the edge of the can as a fulcruin,v
may be seated. It will be seen that the contigui-ation of the cover counters that of the can top and may be said to consist of three substantially Vertical walls, the outer one of which has-a free edge, a. central strengthening plate, two horizontal stiifening rings and adoubled projection forming' a pry-oil' rim to receive an opening tool.
lVhere the accurate .mathematical terms horizontal. y
To apply the cover the parts are placed to,- gether -1n the position shown in Fig. 1 of lthe drawing, the cover being pressed down to engagethecan top. 'It will be seen that when sobrought together the can-top and its cover engage each other in three separate frictional seats, one seat being between two walls stifenedboth above and below by horizontai'stitfening rings andtwo seats being betweenv free edges respectively of the cover and can top and stiffened walls respectively of the.c an-^top and cover. The result is a tight Vand purely frictional closure that will ducin'g a can that may be used for many purposes for which vit has heretofore been thought essential to employ vessels sealed by solder or by packed joints.
