Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 1'2, 1916.
Application filed January 3, 1916. Serial No. 70,011.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that l, PHILLIP S. Cor-inn, a citizen of the Unlted States, residing at -Boston, in the county of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful M6Ill1,...Of-WhlCh the following is a specification.
The present invention appertains generally to books, and aims to provide a novel book adapted particularly for use as a menu in eafs,'restaurants, and the like, although the book may be found useful for other purposes, such as theater programs and the like.
It is the object of the invention to pro-- movable advertising panels or sheets'-pro-- tected by celluloid or other transparent panels or sheets, whereby the advertising panels are protected so that they will not become soiled during the handling of the menu. .Theadvertising panels can beremoved and replaced from time to time, and the permanent leaves are detachably hinged together, the menu leaves being disposed so that when the menu is opened, an advertisement will always be visible when the menu list or bill is exposed. The menu leaves, which comprise a folded or doubled sheet, are held in place by one ofthe, permanent leaves, and by removing said permanent leaf, the menu sheet can be removed and replaced when it becomes soiled, or when the menu list'is-ehanged. This provides for the renewal of soiled menu leaves or" sheets with little trouble, the permanent leaves remaining the same as before. The 'menu leaves are held in place simply by the hinge portion of the permanent leaves, and no additional fasteners, bands, rubbers, glue, or kindred securing means are employed,
- thus saving material and expense. The advertising panels and transparent sheets covering them are metal bound, to prevent the destruction thereof, and the panels can be readlly removed to be replaced for changmg the advertisements.
It is also within the scope of the invent'ion to provide a menu of the nature indicated, which is comparatively simple and inexpensive in construction and which will serve its oiiice in a thoroughly practical and serviceable manner. 4
With the foregoing and other objects in view which will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed'can be made within the scope of what is claimed without departing from the spirit of the invention.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein Figure. 1 is a perspective view of the menu with the leaves separated or opened slightly. Figs. 2, 3, 4 and '5 are plan views of the leaves separated from one another.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail through the hinge taken on the line 66 of Fig. 1. Fig. Y is an enlarged sectional detail-taken on the line 7--7 of Fig. 2, portions beingbroken away. Fig Sis an elevation'of the hinge pin.
The present menu is in the form of a book having five leaves, or ten pages, and embodies the front cover leaf 1, the back cover leaf 2, and the intermediate or central leaf 3, and the menu leaves 4 and 5 disposed between the leaf 3 and the two cover leaves. The leaves 1, 2 and 3 are the permanent advertisement leaves and, they are of similar construction and are hinged together.
Each of the permanent leaves 1, 2 and 3 embodies a rectangular frame 6 of suitable sheet metal or other material possessing theproper qualities, and the upper and lower ends of the frame 6 are provided with refiexed flanges 7, while the free or outer edge of the frame 6 is provided with a refleXed lip 8. Said lips 7 and 8 form with the frame 6 a receptacle for the advertising panel or panels 9, which can be slid by an outward movement under the lips 7, or between the lips 'l' and the frame 6, it being understood, of course, that the leaves are detached when the panels9 are removed and inserted. The opposite sides of the panels or sheets 9 are covered with celluloid or other transparent panels or sheets 10 which fit within the frame 6the same as the panels 9, and said sheets 10 will prevent the advertising'panels from being soiled by the fingers or otherwise, thus keeping the panels 9 clean. Said panels can be provided with various advertising matter, including attractive pictures or cuts, and the outer panel 9.0f the front leaf 1 is preferably provided with an ornamental picture in addition to a proper legend. 7 I
The panels 9 and sheets 10 are held within vthe frame 6, by means of bendable or pliable ears 11 with which the inner edges of the frames 6 are provided, saidjears 11 being bent back or reflexed to engage the inner edges of the panels 9 and sheets 10 to hold them within the frames These ears can be readily bent and unbent.
As herein disclosed, and illustrated, the frames 6 are' formed from sheet metal blanks, although it is to be understood that these frames can be cast or otherwise produced without in any way altering their functions.
In order to hinge the leaves 1, 2 and 3 together, the inner edges of the frames 6 of the cover leaves 1 and 2 are provided adjacent the. ends thereof withalining offset hingebutts 12, and the inner edges of said frames are also provided between their ends with alining offset hinge butts 13, while the inner edge of the frame 6 of the central leaf 3 is provided with a pair of hinge butts 14 disposed between the hinge butts l2 and 13; A hinge pin 15 extends through all of the hinge butts, and-therefore hinges the leaves 1, 2 and 3 together.
The menu leaves 45 comprise a sheet 16 of paper, cardboard or equivalent material, which can be readily cut and printed, and
said sheet 16 is provided along the fold line 18 between the leaves 4 and 5, with an elongated slot 17 The leaf 3 fits between the leaves 4-5, and the hinge butts 14 project through the slot 17 of the sheet 16, the butts 14 abutting against the ends of the slot 17 whereby the sheet 16 is firmly held in place between the permanent leaves, and said leaves 45 are assembled in a hinged man ner with the other leaves to swing open freely.
The leaves can be readily assembled, by first placing the cover leaves 1 and 2 together, then" laying the sheet 16 thereon, then inserting the hinge butts 14 of the leaf 3 through the slot 17 and between the hinge butts 12 and 13 of the cover leaves, and finally inserting the hinge pin 15. The intermediate leaf 3 thus serves to hold the menu leaves 4 and 5 in place, and when the menu leaves 4-5 become soiled, or out of date, they can be readily removed, simply by withdrawing the hinge pin 15 so that the leaf 3 is released, and then by removing the leaf 3, the sheet 16 can be readily removed and replaced by a new one. The menu leaves 45 can thus be renewed from time to time with the use of the same advertise ment leaves 1, 2 and 3, and it will be noted that each. page of the menu leaves 45 faces an advertisement page, whereby when any page of the menu leaves is observed, there will be an advertisement page next to it. The permanent pages are not only of advantage for containing the advertising matter, but they also serve to protect the menu leaves 45, and the device as a whole provides a most desirable and effective book adapted especially for use as a menu, although it can be used for theater programs, and the like, the sheets 45 containing the program proper or other data, which can be renewed with the use of the same advertisement leaves. 7
The advertisements of each of the leaves 1, 2 and 3 may be printed on the opposite sides of a single panel, or two separate panels may be provided, whichever isdesired.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A book comprising three hinged leaves, a doubled sheet providing leaves between the aforesaid leaves, said sheet having a slot at its fold line, and the intermediate leaf having a hinge portion projecting through said slot.
2. A book comprising three hinged leaves, a doubled sheet providing leaves between the aforesaid leaves, said sheet having a slot at its fold line, and the intermediate leaf having a hinge portion projecting through said slot, said intermediate leaf being detachable.
A book embodying three leaves having aiming hinge 'butts,'a hinge pin extending through said butts, and a folded sheet providing two leaves between the aforesaid leaves, said sheet having a slot at its fold line, and the intermediate sheet having a hinge butt projecting through said slot.
4. A book embodying three hinged leaves, each embodying a frame and a removable panel fitted in the frame, a folded sheet providing leaves between the aforesaid leaves, said sheet having a slot at its fold line, the intermediate leaf being detachable and hav iiig a hinge portion projecting through said s ot.
5. A book comprising three leaves each embodying a rectangular frame having hinge butts at its inner edge and means at its upper and lower ends and outer edge for receiving a panel, said frames having bendable ears at their inner edges for holding said panels in place, a hinge pin extending: through said hinge'butts, and a folded as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signasheet pl'ovldlng a pan of leaves between the ture 1n the presence of two witnesses.
aforesaid leaves said sheet havin a slot 3 at its fold line, 11nd the hingevbutt s of the PHILLIP SEYMOUR COHLN- intermediate leaf projecting through said Witnesses:
