l' Y citizen of the United States of America, re-
siding at` Brooklyn, in the county of vKings and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements -in Envelops, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing. 'p
This invention relates for 'its object the production ofk a simple and etllcient envelop which may be cut from a single sheet of material and folded soas to constitute an envelop comprising a plurality of pockets which may be used for the purpose of filing Vrecords or mailing a number J of different articles in the same envelop.
Another object of this invention is the iroduction of a simple and eicient envelop ormed of one sheet of material comprising aV plurality. of pockets which will eliminate` the necessity of pasting or otherwise securing inserts or pockets between the outer folds to produce a plurality of filing or mailing pockets within the envelop.
With these and other objects in view this inventionconsists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed. In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a top plan view of the preferred embodiment of the present invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the structure shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a blank from which the figures illustrated in Figs. 1 and 2 are formed.y Fig. 4 is a plan view of a blank of a modified form of the present invention showing a blank illustrating an envelop comprising fewer pockets than that illustrated in Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a plan view of a blank of a still further modified form. Fig. 6 is a plan view of a blank of a still further modified form. Fig. 7 is a plan viewy of a blank similar to Fifr. 5, the sealing flap being eliminated therefrom. The body 1 is also provided with a front face secured to the body'l, andthe front face 3, as wellv as the body 1 is provided with wings 4l eXJ tending to the right thereof, which are provided with a plurality of fold lines 5 to permit the wings 4 to b e folded along the fold lines 5 for producing the necessary gussetsy for permitting the pockets to be expanded or closedaccording to the Vdesire of the operator. The extreme left hand end of the blank is also provided with a wing portion 9 having a plurality of fold lines 10 formed thereon to permit the same to be lfolded as illustrated clearly in Fig. 1 to `produce the desired seal-V ing of the envelop. It, of course, should be understood that the pockets may be formed as illustrated in Fig. 1 to extend the entire length of the envelop, or the pockets may terminate in any desired point such as in the center or near one end of the envelop, as for instance. in the same manner as illustrated in my previous application bearing Serial Num-V ber 49,026, liled September 4, 1915. It,of course, should be understood that this change may be produced without departing from the spirit of the invention. As illus` trated in Fig. 2 it will be seen that the struc-v ture produced willconstitute a primary set of pockets 11 and an auxiliary set of pockets 12. The envelop may be extended so as to lie flat upon a table or other support, or may be folded to the position shown in Fig. 2, and when the pockets 14, 15, 16 and 17 are filled, the sealing flap 2` may be folded over the front flap 3 and prevent' the contents of Patented oet. 24,1916.
the pockets from falling out. It should, however, be understood that it is important that it should be borne in mind that the present envelop is formed from a blank sheet of material, and that the gussets or folds between the several pockets are formed from the same piece of material, and thereby necessitates the sealing of only one side of each pocket. By carefully considering Fig. 1 it will be seen `that the gussets or folds are folded so as to be substantially Z-shape in cross-section, and have the outer flap portion 18 secured to the abutting face of the next adjoining pocket to constitute a seal therefor, the flap 18` extending inwardly toward the pocket. ,By having the flap extending inwardly the same will resist any tearing action which might take Vplace between the article placedl within the pocket andthe edge of the pocket or fold.
In Fig. 4 there is shown an embodiment of the invention which is similarly constructed to Fig. 3, wherein a body portion 19 is employed having wings 20 similar rto the wings 4, andV being also provided with the fold lines 2l, 22 and 23 similar to the foldlines 7, 8 and 10 illustrated in Fig. 3. By carefully considering Fig. 3, however,'it will be seen that the blankv is formed of a rectangular body of the same width through- -out its entire length, with the exception of the sealing flap 2. It will be noted, however, that in Fig. 4 the blank here illustrated is not uniform in width throughout its entire length for the reason that anarrow projecting strip 24 is provided for producing a plurality of pockets, and this strip 24 extends laterally or from the side of the body portion 1.
In Fig. 5 there is lshown an embodiment of the invention whereinv four pockets are illustrated, but the gussets are not shown as in the form illustrated in Figs. 3 and 4. A flap 25 is formed upon one side of the edge of the wings 26, and the wings 27 are adapted to be folded upon the body 28 and front flop 29, and the wings 126 are then folded over the wings 27, the sealing flap 25 being folded over the outer face of the body 28 and the front flap 29. The envelop may then be sealed byr means of the sealing flap 30.
-In Fig. 6 there is shown an embodiment of the structure shown in Fig. 5, the sealing side flap 25 being shown upon the right hand end of the envelop in place of the left hand side.
In Fig. 7 there is shown another embodiment of the invention similar Ato Fig. 5, the blank being indicated by the numeral 31, andthe sealing flap 30 being eliminated therefrom. i
In Fig. 8 there is shown a further embodiment of the invention which is substantially the reverseV of- Fig. 4, the gussets being removed therefrom, and it will be seen that a body 32 is produced having a front iap 33 provided with side sealing means 34. A
`plurality yof laterally extending wings 35 and 36 are employed having a side sealing flap 37, and it should be understood that in the structure shown in Fig. 8, the iap 35 is folded upon the body 32, and the flap 36 is folded back upon the flap 35, the sealing flap 37 being sealed upon the front outer face of the body 32.- The flap 33 is then folded over the wing36, and the sealing flaps 34 are then secured by means of adhesive material or other suitable fastening means to the outer p face of the body 32. The closure or sealing 'flaps 41 and 42. The sidekflap 42 is provided with a sealing tongue 43, and the envelop is formed in the blank shown in Fig. 9 by folding the flap 41 upon the body 39 and folding the iap 42 over the flap 41 and sealing the tongue 43 over the outer face of the body 39. The front flap 40 is then folded over'the Hap 42, and the sealing tongue or flap 44 is then sealed over-the edge of the from flap 40.
From the foregoing description and by carefully considering the illustration it will be seen that the same principle has been followed out in all of the different formsv of the envelop, although different structures having different advantages are illustrated by means of different modified forms. It will be seen further that by means of the structure illustrated in the preferred embodiments of Figs. 1, 2, 3 and 4, that a very simple andeiiicient means has been produced for providing the gussets or folds upon the ends ofthe pockets to permit the pockets to have an eXpansible movement and yet at the same time be folded in a compact relation.
` Having thusdescribed the invention what is claimed as new, is:-
As a new article of manufacture, an envelop formed of a continuous one piece blank sheet of material comprising a body, a sealing flap secured to said body, said body provided with a front face, said front face and body provided with laterally projecting wings, said wings provided with a plurality of fold lines for permitting said wings to be folded along said fold'lines for producing pockets and also producing gussets for permitting the pockets to be expanded or closed according to the desire of the operator, said body provided with an elongated strip extending laterally from the body and front iap and being formed integral therewith and comprising a plurality of spaced body portions,'said spaced body portions provided with a plurality of fold lines arranged interelongated strip adapted to be folded cenmediate the body portions of said elongated trally and longitudinally of its length for strip for producing expansible gussets beproducing a pair of groups of pockets when 10 tween the pockets of the envelop, said elonthe envelop is in a folded condition.
