IMPROVEMENT lN CLOTHES-DRIERS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 120,785, dated November 7, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, GEORGE CLAYTON SMITH and CHARLES HENRY DIETRIOH, of Middleville, in the coimty of Barry and State of Michigan, have invented a new and valuable Improvement in Olothesdtacks; and we do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the construction and operation of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawing making a part of this specification, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon.

Figure l of the drawing is a representation of a vertical section of our invention. Fig. 2 is a top view of a portion of clothes-frame. Fig. 3 is a-detached sectional view of hollow plate and gudgeon, upon which the clothes-frame rests. Fig. 4 is a similar view, the parts being sepa rated. Fig. 5 is a top view of said plate.

This invention has relation to an improved clothes-drier; and consists of a horizontally-revolving rack supported on top of an extension frame, the movable section of which is operated by a reel having a crank-arm, by turning which said section is elevated or lowered within suitable guides. A dog is provided to engage with another cut in said movable sections, and thereby lock the latter at every desired height.

In the accompanying drawing illustrating our invention, A represents a stationary post, which may be inserted in the ground or in a broad sill, B. a is a dog pivoted in a slot at the upper end of said post,and designed to engage with notches a cut in the movable post or section 0. D is a reel arranged within a mortise, d, formed in the section 0, near the lower end thereof. D is a strap which winds around said reel, one end being attached to the post A,'near the top thereof. E is a crank connected with the reel D for turning the same, the operation of which elevates the section 0 or allows the same to descend. c c

are shoulders on the upper and lower ends of the posts A and 0, respectively, and facing each other, so as to leave an opening, 0', between the inner sides of the posts for the strap D. F is a rest for the section G when the same is lowered. G G are guiding-loops. The former is secured to the post A by a pin, and passes around the section (3. The latter is in like manner secured to the lower end of said section, and passes around the post A. H represents the radial rack-arms, having their inner ends secured between plates h h, which are slightly curved or concave, so as to give the radial arms a slight incline upward so as to keep the clothes which are hung thereon from falling off from the outer ends. The plate h is depressed in the center, and formed with an opening, so as to fit and turn on the rounded end of the section 0. In the depression thus formed is placed a headed gudgeon, z, the shank of which is inserted in the section 0, and rigidly secured by a transverse pin, 70. On top of said gudgeon is placed a disk, is, slightly concave, so as to form a surface corresponding with the form of the plate h. L rep resents vertical bolts passing through the plates h h, and securing the radial arms H thereto. M are pins inserted, as shown in Fig. 1, in the arms H, to hold the clothes which are hung thereon. The purpose of the disk 70 is to prevent the wear of the arms H by the turning thereof, and to provide a smooth surface for contact with the gudgeon i.

Having described our invention, we claim 1. The combination of the arms H, curved plates h h, gudgeon 2', posts A and 0, when constructed and arranged substantially as and for the purpose set forth.

2. The disk 70, in combination with the gudgeon 1', arms H, plate k, and post 0, as and for the purpose specified.
