VALVE-GRINDING TOOL.

To a whom it may camera) Be it known that I, BURTON B. BEAN, .a citizen of the United States, anda resident of New Haven. in the couutyof New Haven and State. of Connecticut. have invented a new and Improved \"alve-(irimling Tool, of which the following is a full. clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide. a new anil improved valve grinding tool more especially designed for grinding valves of internal combustion engines such, for instance, as are used in automobiles, motor boats and the like, and arranged to permit the user to readily grip and turn the valve in its seat and to allow of occasionally lifting the valve to facilitate accurate grinding of the valve in the seat.
In order to accomplish the desired result use is made of a split body-provided with depending grippin means, adapted to engagethe valve toas ground, the gripping means being located on opposite sides of the split, and a clamping screw on the said body and extending across the split near the outer end thereof to allow of drawing the split members of the body toward each other to firmly engage the gripping means with the valve to be ground. Use is also made of a peculiarly shaped handle attached to the body of the grindingl tool to allow of conveniently rotating 't e tool and the valve with which it is engaged at the time.

which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a sectional elevation of the valve grinding tool as applied to the valve of an internal combustion engine: Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same with the body of the grinding tool and the valve seat shown insection; Fig. 3 is a sectional plan view of the same on the line 3-3 of Fig; 2; and Fig. 4 is a cross section of the same on the line 4.-4 of Fig. 2.
The body 10 of the valve grinding tool is made in disk shape and has its bottom 11 concave to snugly fit onto the top of the, valve 12 to be ground in its valve seat 13.- The body 10 is provided with a slot 14 extending from the edge of the disk diametrically across the same to within a distance of the other side, the slot termmatlng in an opening 15 extending through the disk in a vertical direction so that two clamping jaws 16 and 17 are provided on the disk body 10. The outer or free ends-of the jaws l6 and 17 are connected with each other by a clamping screw 18 which extends at a right angle across the slot 14 to permit of moving the jaws 16 and 17 toward or from each other.
The under side of the body 10 is provided with gripping means for engaging the valve 12 and the said gripping means are pref-- erably in the form of a pair of keys'19, 20'
depending from the under side 11 of the body 10 and locked on the jaws 16 and 17, that is, at opposite sides of the slot 14. The
gripp ng keys 1%) and 20 extend in a diametrical. line at a right angle to the diametrical slot 14. as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 3. and the lower projecting ends ofthe keys 19 and 20 are adapted to engage key recesses .20 and 21 formed in the upper face of the valve 12. as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 1. lVhen the gripping keys 19 and 20 are engaged with the. recesses 21 and 22 then the jaws 16 and 17 are in their normal open position,
and after the gripping keys 19 and 2-0 have been engaged with the said recesses 21 and 22 then the clamping screw 18 is screwed up to wave the jaws 16 and 17 toward each other whereby the gripping jaws 19 and 20 are moved in a like direction to cause the across the slot 14 at themiddle of the disk body 10, that is, in alinement with the gripping keys 19 and 20, and on this pivot pin 25 is fulcrumed the shank 26 of'a handle 27 provided at its lower end with a flange 28 adapted to form a convenient rest for the two hands of the operator having hold of the handle 27 between the hands to allow of rotating the handle and with it, the tool and the valve. By the arrangcmgnitdescribed. the handle 27 is free to swing on its pivot 25 to hold the handle at any desired angle relative to the axis of the body 10 and the valve 12 to exert more or less pressure at one side or the other as the case may be. It will ice BEST AVAILABLE COP also be noticed that by the ope ator having hold of the handle 27 between the two hands the tool and the valve can be readily rotated or the valve temporarily lifted oil its seat and then returned to facilitate accurate grinding of the valve in the seat 13. After the valve is properly ground in its seat the ope 'ator unscrews the clamping screw 18 to release the keys 1!) and 20 relative to the key recesses 21 and thus permitting convenient lifting of the body 10 out of engagement with the valve 12.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire toisecure by Letters Patent 1. A valve grinding tool. comprising a split body provided with depending gripping means adapted to engage the valve, the gripping means being located on opposite sides of the split, and a clamping screw on the said body and extending across the split near the outer end thereof and parallel to a vertical plane passing through the axes oi the said gripping means to allow of drawing the split members of the bodytoward each other to firmly engage the gripping means with the valve to be. ground.

A valve grinding tool, comprising a disk provided with a slot extending diametrically'from the peripheral edge of the disk to within a distance of the edge at the opposite side, the said slot providing the disk with a-pair of jars, gripping keysdepending-from the jaws and adapted to engage key recesses in the valve to be gr-xind, and a clamping screw engaging the jaws near extending across key recesses in the valve to be ground. the
said gripping keys extending in a (llilllltflr rical line at a right angle to the said slot, a clamping screw engaging the outer l'ree end-z ot' the jaws and extending across the slot. a pivot held in the disk and extending at a right angle across the slot in alinenlent with the said gripping keys and a handle having a shank extending into the slot and pivoted on the said pivot.
