Specification of Letters Patent.

Application led October 15, 1915. Serial No. 55,936.
. To all whom t 'may concern:
Be it known that I, CLARENCE N. STONE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newton Highlands, in the county of Middlesex, in the Commonwealth of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Books or Catalogues, of which the following is a specification.
My invention is an improved catalogue or book for advertising articles of sale such as jewelry.
rlhe object of my improvementI is to provide as a part of the catalogue a finger-measuring device or gage for rings, thimbles and other articles to be worn on the hand.
To this end my invention consists essentially, in combining with the book or catalogue in which the articles are illustrated and described a permanently attached page having marginly-disposed openings of different dimensions for measuring orl gaging the size of the lingers on which the articles are to be worn.
The invention is fully described in the following speciflcation, illustrated by the accompanying drawing which is a view in perspective of a book or catalogue having my improvement applied thereto.
ln the drawing B designates a book of the usual catalogue type having flexible covers C, C between which are bound the leaves L, L, etc. rlhe pages of the book may be of any convenient size and shape and are printed with illustrations and descriptions of the articles catalogued, such as nger-rings, thimbles and other commodities. Bound into the book in any desired position between its pages is a leaf S conforming in size to the other leaves. rlhe leaf S, however, is preferably 'cut from heavier stock than the other leaves and is generally made of Bristol-board or cardboard having a strong texture while being fairly pliable. The opposite sides of the leaf S may be printed with illustrations of rings, thimbles or similar goods and, if desired, adjacent pages are used for the same purpose.
Around the margin of the leaf S are pierced a series of spaced, circular openings s, s, etc., of graduated diameters in accordance with the sizes in which the rings or other articles are made. ln this way a gage or measuring-device is provided as a permanent part of the catalogue whereby the size of a persons nger can be determined so that any article may be ordered in accordance therewith. Usually, directions for measuring the fingers are printed at the bottom of the page and the openings s at the margin are numbered or lettered to correspond with a standard scale. t is obvious that the number and arrangement of the openings in the leaf may be varied as desired, and in some instances more than one pierced leaf could be usedto advantage for the purpose described. ln place of the extra, pierced leaf between the pages of the book one of its covers might be provided with the openings to adapt it to serve as the gage.
My improvement is especially adapted for use with inail-order catalogues to provide for ordering articles to iit the finger without necessitating that the purchaser visit a jeweler for measurement. T he ring-gage being provided as a. permanent part cf the catalogue is more convenient for use in connection with the selection of the articles illustrated and described, and is also less liable of being lost or mislaid. it can be applied to the book when the latter is bound and may be used as an extra page for displaying the articles catalogued. Serving as a ready and convenient means for measuring the finger it acts as an incentive to prompt ordering and is therefore of manifest advantage to the manufacturer or dealer issuing the catalogue. Being extremely simple and inexpensive to apply, it does not add materially to the cost of the book, but on the contrary saves the expense of providing a separate gage or measuring-device.
Various modifications might be made in the form and arrangement of my improvement without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention;
Therefore, without limiting myself to the exact embodiment shown, what l claim is ln a book or catalogue, the combination with the several leaves thereof of a leaf of relatively heavier stock bound into the book In testimony whereof I aHiX my signature and provided with a series of circular openin presence of two Witnesses.
ings of 0rraduated finger-ring sizes havin'o' w printed indicia adjacent each opening indil CLARENCE N' STONE' eating the size of the opening related there- TWitnesses: to and adapted for the insertion of the n- ALICE M. SPEAR, ger to measure its size. FREDERIC L. KING.
