Description

0. J. WISE.
FOLDING BED TABLE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY26,19I5- same name @FFJIGE.
OTIS J. WISE, F CHARLESTON, WEST, VIRGINIA.
FOLDING- BED-TABLE.
' Application filed May 26.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OTIS J. WISE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Charleston, in the county of Kanawha, State of WVest Virginia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Folding Bed- Tables; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as Will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to a folding bed table.
An object of the invention resides in the provision of a table which may be conveniently swung over a bed so as to be accessible by the occupant thereof.
A further object of the invention resides in so constructing the device that it may be disassembled or swung out of position when not in use.
With these and other objects in view, such as will appear as the description progresses, my invention comprises the combination and arrangement of parts as set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
Referring to the drawing:
. Figure 1 is an elevational view of my device showing the same attached to the post of a bed.
Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device.
Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional View.
Fig. 4 is an enlarged view of the clamp.
Fig. 5 is a side elevation of a modification of my device.
Fig. 6 is a sectional view thereof.
Referring. to the drawing wherein like parts are indicated by like characters throughout the several views In the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 to 4 inclusive of the drawing, I have provided a pair of clamping members which have jaws l and bearing portions 2. The jaws 1 are adapted to clamp a bed post which is indicated in the drawing by the character 3. These jaws are operated by means of a thumb nut 4 on a bolt 5 which extends through holes 6 in the shanks of the jaws, the hole in one of the jaws being square to accommo date the-square end of the bolt so that the turning of the bolt will be prevented.
Extending through the bearing portions 2 of the clamps is a hollow cylindrical member 7 which is secured in place by caps 8 which are screw-threaded upon the ends of Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2'7, 191"]. 1915. Serial No. 30,596.
the said member. A collar 9 is secured to the member 7 by a set screw 10. Supported by this collar and rotatably mounted on the cylindrical member 7 is a sleeve 11 which has a stud 12 formed thereon. This stud extends into and is secured to an arm 13. A socket member 14 is secured on the other end thereof, the socket member being provided with a stud 15 which extends into the arm 13 and is secured therein. A casting 16 which has a stud 17 extending into the socket member 14 is rotatably and removably mounted on said socket member and is provided with a stud 18 which extends into and is secured to a second arm 19. A socket 20 having a stud 21 extending into the arm 19 is secured to the other end of the arm 19 and is rotatably and removably mounted. In this socket is a casting 22 having a finger 23 extending into the socket and a finger 24 extending into and secured to a third arm 25 which has a socket member 26 secured thereon in a manner similar to that in which the socket member 20 is secured. A support 27 is rotatably and removably, mounted upon the socket member 26 and has a finger 28 extending into said socket. Secured to this support is a tray 29 of suitable construction. In using this form of the device the clamps are secured to one of the posts of a bed so that the tray 29 may be swung over the bed when desired. The tray may be swung and the arms folded one upon the other so that the tray will be out of the way when not in use. The length of the arm 13 is slightly greater than the radius of the tray so that the tray, when the arms are folded, will be free from the cylindrical member 7. Should it be desired to move the tray, entirely, however, this may be accomplished by lifting the arms 19 and 25 together with the tray from the arm 13.
In the embodiment of the invention shown in Figs. 5 and 6 of the drawing, I have provided a pair of plates 30 which are adapted to be secured to a wall in spaced relation by means of screws passing through holes 31 therein. Formed on these plates are bearing members 32 between which a cylindrical member 33 similar to the member 7 extends, which member is held in place by caps 34 in threaded engagement with the ends of the member. A plurality of arms are mounted on this member 33 in a manner similar to that in which the arms are mounted in the preferred embodiment of my invention and the construction is therefore not particularly described. Mounted in the socket member on the endmost of these arms is a'support which has a clutch member 36 formed there on from which extends a shaft 37 having a head 38 on the end thereof. This shaft extends through a second clutch member 39 having a finger 40 thereon, which finger extends into the socket and is rotatable therein and removable therefrom. A suitable tray is secured to the support 35. In order that.
the clutch members 36 and 39 may be normally maintained in engagement so that the tray will be held in a horizontal position, I have provided a coil spring 41 which en circles the shaft 37. This form of my device is particularly adapted to be secured to the wall between two beds so that it may be swung over either one or the other of the beds. By providing the support 35 with a clutch member the support may be held in a horizontal position or may be swung into a vertical position, the latter position being that which it will occupy when the device is folded against the wall. 1
From the foregoing description it will be sen that I have provided a folding bed table which may be swung into a position over the bed when desired and folded and swung out of position when not in use.
WVhile I have illustrated and described a.
particular embodiment of my invention I do not wish to be limited to that particular embodiment as it is obvious that numerous changes may be made within the details of construction thereof without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is In a bed table, the combination with a cylindrical bracket member; of spaced clamps carried bysaid bracket member and each comprising a pair of arms each having one end journaled on the bracket member and a gripping jaw at the other end, a screw passing through one of the arms and engaging the other in each pair, each pair of said arms having their journaled ends interlocked and slidable on the bracket member, caps on the ends of the bracket member to retain the clamps thereon, a plurality of folding arms mounted on the bracket mem bar, and a tray supported on the free end of the outermost arm.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of witnesses.
OTIS J. WISE.
