To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that I, HENRY D. MILLs, a citizen of the United States, residing at Inwood, in the county of Nassau and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Screens, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to window screens, and has for an object to provide a screen of relatively movable sections, whereby the screen maybe fitted to window openings of various widths.
Another object of the invention is to provide an adjustable window screen of the character above set forth, and embodying a single strip of wire fabric or screening material, with means for taking up or paying out the strip as the screen sections are adjustedtoward or away from each other.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a window screen having relatively adjustable frame sections, formed ofpressed metal, and embodying means whereby the wire fabric may be inclosed within the frame sections at the marginal edges of the fabric, and a rib on said frame sections whereby said sections may be guided and maintained in alinement during relative adjustment thereof.
In addition to the foregoing, my inven tion comprehends improvements in the details of construction and arrangement of the correlated parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly set forth in the appended claims.

for relative movement. The sections are in each instance rectangular with one side left open, and the section 10, comprises an upper and lower horizontal frame member 12 and 13 respectively, and a vertical side member 14.
U The frame section 10 is formed of pressed metal, and in cross section the members thereof are formed of spaced sides 14 formed by doubling the metal at 15, with the free edges which constitute the inner edges of the frame section, bent outwardly, as at 16. The portions 16 which are bent outwardly, however, extend to only a short distance from the member 14 of the frame along the inner edges of the frame members 12 and 13, and are adapted to form a stop for limiting the movement of the frame section 11 in a manner which will be presently obvious. One
of the portions 14 of the members 12, 13 and 14, of the frame section 10, is pressed outwardly to form a rib 17; having spaced inner sides, the ribs on the members 12 and 13 being provided adjacent their point of connection with the rib of the frame member 14 with a circular opening in one instance, and a rectangular slot 18 in the other instance. The rectangular opening is however preferably provided in the ridge formed upon the lower frame members 13, and a spring roller preferably constructed of sheet metal, indicated at 19, is provided with a circular trunnion 20 adapted to enter the aforesaid circular opening in the rib of the frame member 12, and a rectangular trunnion 21 which enters the aforesaid rectangular slot 18 in the lower rib. The keeper 22 is pivoted as at 23 to the rib upon the lower frame member 13, adjacent the journal of the spring roller, and saidkeepers are provided with a rectangular opening 24 in which to receive the aforesaid rectangular trunnions 20 and 21 of the spring roller, whereby the said trunnion is effectively secured and held against rotation, said trunnion being thereby retained within the aforesaid rectangular opening 18. The keeper 22 is formed upon its upper edge with an inclined portion 25 the object of which will be presently noted.
' The roller 19 as mentioned above is hollow, and provided with a central longitudinally extending rod 26 connected to the rectangular trunnion 21 and a coil spring 27 is encircled about said rod and connected at one end to the rod and the opposite end to the interior of the roller.

It will be whereby when the pawl is in the position i noted by reference to Fig. 3, that when the pawl is moved to bring its connecting portion into engagement with the rib upon which it is'pivoted, through the medium of a pivot pin 32 with the rib and ears 30, the free end of the pawl is adapted to engage by its connecting portion between adjacent teeth of the aforesaid ratchet wheel 28 thereby retaining the wheel against rotation. The pawl is also formed with an inclined portion '33 which is adapted to engage the inclined portion. 25 of the aforesaid keeper just referred to the keeper is retained in a position to secure the rectangular trunnion of the spring roller in place.
The screen section 11 is similarly formed of sheet metal, with the upper and lower members 3e and 35 respectively thereof, as Wellas the vertical connecting member 36 farmed. of sheet metal of adouble thickness indicated at 37, and with one of said thicknesses formed with a lateral longitudinally extending rib 38. The inner marginal portions of the members 34, 35 and 36 of the frame section 11 are bent outward as at 39, andwhen the said sections 10 and 11 are brought into relation, the members 34: and 35 of the section 11 are adapted to enter the space between the spaced portion 14 of the members 12 and 13 of the section 10, whereby relative sliding or telescopic movement of the frame members is permitted. It is also to be noted'that the ribs 38 of said members 34: and 35 are adapted to enter the ribs 17 of the members 12 and 13, and the outturned bars 39 of the screen section 11 receive the inner edges of the members 12 and 1 3 of the screen section 10, thus providing mutual guiding members to guide the frame sections 10- and 1 1 duringrelative adjustment thereof. It is also to be noted at this time that the similar out-turned portions on the inner edges of the frame members 12 and 1 3, form stop, to limit movement of the frame section 11 by engagement with the out-turned margin 39 of said frame section 11, as clearly set forth in F ig. 1. The screen material is in the nature of a strip of wire fabric indicated at 4:0, with one end secured between the members of the element 36 of the frame section ll, with the marginal portions of said screen section lO disposed within the space between the metallic strips comprising the members 34 and 35, and also the members 12 and 13, with the opposite end of the fabric wrapped about the spring roller 19 and secured thereto as at 41.
To adjust the screen to window openings of difierent widths, it is but necessary to re lease the pawl 29 from engagement with the ratchet wheel- 28, and then move the screen sections relatively, permitting the wire fabric to play out when the screen section widens and to take up the material as the sections are moved toward each other to shorten the screen.
While I have illustrated and described my invention with some degree of particularity I realize that in practice various alterations thereover may be made, and I therefore, rcserve the right and privilege of changing the form of the details of construction or otherwise altering the arrangement of parts without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the appended claims.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A window screen including relatively movable frame sections, said frame sections being formed of sheet metal with the members thereof of double thickness having one face thereof pressed outward to form a rib, the ribs of the frame section being interengaged to form guides when the frame sections are moved relatively to adjust the screen, a spring roller mounted upon one section, a screen section mounted within the frame, wrapped about the roller at one end, and having its opposite end secured to the opposite frame section, whereby to automatically take up or pay out the screen material as the frame sections are moved toward or away from each other, and releasable means for retaining the roller against movement subsequent to adjustment of th screen sections.

A window screen, including relatively movable frame sections, opposed ribs formed on one section having alined openings, one of said openings being circular and the other rectangular extending to the edge of the rib, a spring roller having a cylindrical trunnion at one end adapted to enter said circular opening, and a rectangular trunnion at the opposite end adapted to enter laterally a rectangular opening, a ratchet wheel secured to the spring roller, adjacent the end having the rectangular trunnion, a keeper pivotally secured to one rib for engaging the rectan gular trunnion, to retain the same in place,
