Application led November 27, 1916. Serial No. 133,765.
.To all whom t may conce/m."
Be it known that i, SEMEN SYNOHUBYK, a subject of the King of England, residing at Myrnam, in the Province of Alberta and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Protective Masks, Vof which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to masks and has special reference to a protective mask designed to protect the wearer against the inhalation of noxious or poisonous fumes and gases as well as to afford protection against lachrymal gases and corrosive uids.
n @ne object of the invention is to improve and simplify the general construction of devices of this character.
second object of the invention is to provide an improved mask of this character which, while permitting free eXhalation from the nostrils will only permit inhalation through the mouth, the opening for the latter being covered by gas absorbent or counteracting material so arranged as to be readily swung aside for talking, feeding and the like..
A third object of the invention is to provide an improved construction of mask having elastic portions so positioned and arranged that it may be fitted to any .sized head, the elastic portions being protected from undue stresses by a novel arrangement of relatively inelastic draw laces.
`With the above and other objects in view, as will be hereinafter apparent the invention consists'in general of certain novel details of construction and combinations of parts `hereinaiter fully described, illustrated in c accompanying drawing, and specifically claimed.
lin the accompa" ing drawing, like characters of reference indicate like parts in the several views, and
Figure l is a side view of the mask in yuse wearer.
Z is a front view of the mask laid out i .g 3 is a -vertical median section tarough the mas; on a wearers head.
ln the embodiment of the invention herein illustrated here disclosed a mask havt or f "c ortion 1G to which are connected, by of elastic strips 11, the side portions 12. fhese side portions have,
..sions i3 which connected hehind the head by snap fastenings 14. rl`he portions 1() and 1Q are also connected by lacings 15 so that, by proper adjustment of these lacings the elastic strips may be prevented from stretching so far that they tear or break.
Beneath the portion 10, and formed integrally therewith is a mouth and chin portion 16 terminating in neck straps 17 adapt-.
' pivot 27 and provided at its other end with a hook 28 engageable over a headed pin 29. By means of this arrangement the hook may be raisedand then the hook provided end of the basket may be sprung out and dropped to afford free access to the mouth opening. The basket is preferably filled with absorbent material 30 which may be moistened with a suitable chemical to absorb or neutraliZe' any poisonous or noxious fumes or gases.`
rlhe whole mask is bound with a peripheral cushion 31 to cause it to iit closely.
|'lhere has thus been provided a simple and efficient deviceof the kind described and for the purpose specified.
lt is obvious that many minor changes may be made in the form and construction of the invention without departing from the material principles thereof. it is not therefore desired to confine the invention to the exact form herein shown and described but it is wished to include all such as properly come within the scope claimed.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
1. A mask of the class described having a front or face portion and lateral portions, elastic strips connecting the face and lateral portions. means to limit the expansion of the elastic strips and4 means to releasably secure said lateral portions together behind the wearers head.
QXA mask of the class described having a front or face portion and lateral portions, elastic strips connecting the face and lateral portions, laoings crossing said elastic strips and limiting the expansion thereofl and means to releasably secure said lateral portions together behind the Wearers head.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in the' presence of tWo Witnesses.
JOHN W. G. MORRISON,- J. S. LozIoK.
