To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, WILLIAM C.v DE WENDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements 'in Invalid-Beds, of' which thev following is a specification.
This invention relates to beds and more particularly to invalid beds. I
The principal object of the invention is to rovide a device of the character descri edv in which an invalid can help himself or herself toa great extent without the aid of a nurse and without placing the nurse in an embarrassing position, particularly when the invalid is a man.
Another object of -the invention is the pro- Vvision .of a bed of the character described having a novel, simple and "eiiicient means for disposing of the urine and excrement in a sanitary manner'v without the aid of a nurse. Y y
Another and essential feature is the provision of simplev and conveniently operated means for raising and lowering aportion of p the bed whereby the patient may sit up or occupy areclining position.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read 1n connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms apart of this application, and in which v Figure 1 is a side elevation..
Fig. 2 is a top lan view. Fig. 3 is an en elevation. -l Fig. 4 is a longitudinal section showing the head of the bed raised. Fig. 5 is a detail vertical longitudinal section showing the construction of the bowl and its associated parts.
F'gi 6 is a perspective view of the female Fig. 7 is a similar "View of the mais Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 represents a bed frame of ordinary construction which is supported on the legs 2 as is usual and hasconnected thereto the head and foot sections 3 and 4, respectively. Mountedl on the frame 1 is a spring mattress frame 5 constructed in two sections 6 and 7 hinged together so that the section 7 may be raised to sup ort the invalid in reclining osition or to e used as a back when the patient is sitting up. The section 7 is Specification of Letters Patent. Application med september a, 1914. semi No. esasss.

appairbof rack bars 8 .givotally connecte to lsaid .section and sli ably mounted in angular brackets 9 con- 14 which is bridged across the frame 5 is a closet bowl 15 having a dischargev pipe 16 depending therefrom. This pipe 16 is connected lto a nipple17 on the lreceiving tank 18 by means `of a flexible coupling 19 which 1s readily uncoupled'so that thetank may be removed from beneath the bed for emptylng. The nipple 17 can be closed by a cap 20 when the tank is disconnected from the discharge pipe 16 and a similar cap 21 normally closes the discharge and ushing spout 22. I Both caps are preferably connected to the tank 18 by chains or other flexible connectors 23 so as to prevent loss.
Extending vertically from the top of the tank 18 is a funnel 24 having a perforated cap 25 and in this funnel is located a sponge or other absorbent element containing a suitable disenfectant. The tank is also provided which conveys the water from the tank 27 to the. bowl 15. The discharge of water from the tank 27 is controlled by a valve 29 operated by alever 30 having a chain 31 conveniently located whereby the patient may flush the bowl when desired.
As will be seen from' aninspection of the drawings, the bowl 15 extends some distance above the spring mattress structure 14 and projects into an aperture 32 formed centrally of the mattress 33 and protected by a sheathing 34 of any suitable material impervious to moisture. The aperture is closed and the bowl closed by a removable plug 35, andthe mattress is preferably covered by a transto cover the plug.
1. and- Alegs 2, and enln order that this device may be properly used I employ the attachments 38 and 39 which consist of peculiarly shaped funne1s,
the female patient. rllhese attachments all have suciently long spouts to properly enter the bowl and may be used either for urinary purposes or for easing the bowel .when the patient is too weak to sit up vover the bowl, the attachment 39 being of sufficient size to extend over the anus.
The head of the bed has mounted thereon in convenient position to be reached by the invalida headed stud 40 adapted to receive a roll of toilet paper.
1t is thought that the foregoing will be suflicient for those versed in the art to understand the invention and the operation thereof, it being understood that many modi- 'cations may be resorted to in practice and I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the exact construction shown but desire it understood that such changes are contemplated and may be made as are covered bythe scope.
across said frame and held against-movement upon said bed frame, said mattress` having anvopening, a head section on said bed frame, a iushing tank hooked over thel top of said head section, a bowl -tting into said opening, a receiving tank under said mattress, a sectional pipe extending upwardly from said receiving tank, a pipe extending below said flushing tank and having a pipe section connected to said bowl,'
so that said flushing tank is held against swinging, and a coupling connecting the sections of said sectional pipe to permit the receiving tank to be removed.
In testimony whereof I aix my in presence of two Witnesses. WILLIAM C. DE WENDT. Witnesses:
