Be it known that I, WILLIAM C.v DE WENDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements 'in Invalid-Beds, of' which thev following is a specification.

This invention relates to beds and more particularly to invalid beds. I

The principal object of the invention is to rovide a device of the character descri edv in which an invalid can help himself or herself toa great extent without the aid of a nurse and without placing the nurse in an embarrassing position, particularly when the invalid is a man.

Another object of -the invention is the pro- Vvision .of a bed of the character described having a novel, simple and "eiiicient means for disposing of the urine and excrement in a sanitary manner'v without the aid of a nurse. Y y

Another and essential feature is the provision of simplev and conveniently operated means for raising and lowering aportion of p the bed whereby the patient may sit up or occupy areclining position.

Further objects of the invention will appear as the following description is read 1n connection with the accompanying drawing, which forms apart of this application, and in which v Figure 1 is a side elevation..

This pipe 16 is connected lto a nipple17 on the lreceiving tank 18 by means `of a flexible coupling 19 which 1s readily uncoupled'so that thetank may be removed from beneath the bed for emptylng. The nipple 17 can be closed by a cap 20 when the tank is disconnected from the discharge pipe 16 and a similar cap 21 normally closes the discharge and ushing spout 22. I Both caps are preferably connected to the tank 18 by chains or other flexible connectors 23 so as to prevent loss.

Extending vertically from the top of the tank 18 is a funnel 24 having a perforated cap 25 and in this funnel is located a sponge or other absorbent element containing a suitable disenfectant. The tank is also provided which conveys the water from the tank 27 to the. bowl 15. The discharge of water from the tank 27 is controlled by a valve 29 operated by alever 30 having a chain 31 conveniently located whereby the patient may flush the bowl when desired.

As will be seen from' aninspection of the drawings, the bowl 15 extends some distance above the spring mattress structure 14 and projects into an aperture 32 formed centrally of the mattress 33 and protected by a sheathing 34 of any suitable material impervious to moisture. The aperture is closed and the bowl closed by a removable plug 35, andthe mattress is preferably covered by a transto cover the plug.

The head of the bed has mounted thereon in convenient position to be reached by the invalida headed stud 40 adapted to receive a roll of toilet paper.
