WALTER H. SHELTON, OF EL PASO, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR TO THE SI-IELTON-PAYNE ARMS COMPANY, OF EL PASQ, TEXAS, A CORPORATION.
PISTOL-HOLSTER.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented June 12, 1 917,
Application filed November 13, 1916. Serial No. 131,091.
To all to ham it may concern Be it known that I, WALTER H. SHELTON, a citizen of the United States, residing at El Paso, in the county of El Paso and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pistol-Holsters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to improvements in pistol holsters, and has for an ob-- ject to provide an improved pistol holster in which the barrel or case will be so constructed as to receive the weapon and hold the same in a position with the handle or stock thereof projecting away from the body of the wearer, so as to be readily grasped and quickly drawn from the holder.
It is another object of the present invention to provide an improved pistol holster in which the covering flap as heretofore used and which interfered with the quick pulling of the weapon, is dispensed with and a relative narrow strap is substituted, which engages over the hammer, thereby prevent ing striking of the same as well as accidental slipping of the revolver from the holster.
A further object of the present invention lies in providing an improved pistol holster which will have a separate strip in the sheath thereof, in which is cut a slot for receiving the magazine-releasing pin and holding the latter out of possible engagement with the rear wall of said sheath in .a manner to avoid the accidental release of revolver; and
Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the blank from which the improved holster is constructed.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the improved holster is made up from a blank of leather, or other suitable material, cut out, stamped, or otherwise produced, to provide a body 1, and a base 2 extending from the upper edge of said body 1 and being bent there-behind on the line of flexure 3. The body 1 and base 2 are secured at substantially the bottom of the holster case or sheath by one or more fastenings 1.
A lateral flap 5 also forms one portion of the blank, such flap 5 being a complement of the body 1, and being folded over thereon in-the manner indicated in Fig. 1, uniting therewith to constitute the case or sheath into which the weapon fits. This flap 5 may be secured to the body 1 in any suitable manner, advantageously by the stitching indicated at 6. A strap 7 encircles the case or sheath substantially centrally, and is secured to the base 2 at one end as by a fastening 8, shown in Fig. 2, and at its other end by a fastening 9, illustrated in both Figs. 1 and 2. The openings 10, seen in Fig. 2, are for admitting the prongs of the fastening device 9, which are overturned on the rear face of the base in'a manner which will-be well understood. Obviously other fastening means may be employed.
In the flap -5 is produced a slot 11, through which the index finger is received to engage the trigger of the revolver which rests in the holster opposite this slot, as indicated in Fig. 1.
In the case or sheath is placed a leather or other strip, or piece, 12, formed with a beveled straight edge 13 terminating short of one longitudinal wall of the holster, and conforming substantially to the curvature of the gun barrel, it thus forming with the proximate walls of the case a substantially round socket for snugly receiving the gun barrel. a
This piece 12 is held in place by the stitching 6 passing therethrough, as clearly shown in the drawings. This strip 12, however, might be held in the case by other means. In its upper edge this strip 12 is formed with a slot 13 coming substantially opposite the slot 11 in the flap 5, and being provided to receive the magazine releasing pin on the revolver stock and prevent the same from coming in contact with the body 1, thereby preventing accidental release of the magazine.
The body 1 is slitted at 14 to receive one end of a strap 15 which is passed therethrough and secured to the body as inclicated at 16; such strap being for the purpose of holding the pistol in the holster, and while preventing its accidental removal therefrom, at the same time allowing it to be readily withdrawn whenever the wearer so desires. For this purpose the strap 15 is nection with the accompanying drawings,
the construction of the improved holster will be readily understood by those versed in this art; and it will be apparent to all the users of firearms that the piece 12 will engage the revolver parts adjacent the barrel in a manner to hold the handle or stock of the weapon at an angle away from the body so as to be entirely free thereof, and in a position to be readily grasped by the wearer and quickly withdrawn from the holster. The fastening 17 will readily yield under the strain and release the revolver without the necessity of the wearer having to positively undo this connection.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and arrangements of parts without departing fromthe spirit of my invention, and therefore I do not wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims; a
I claim:
1. A pistol'holster including a casing constructed to provide a socket for receiving the gun barrel, and a strip extending substantially the length of said-casing inside of same and forming one side of said socket,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for the pistol barrel, said strip adapted to engage the magazine and hold the pistol. handle outwardly so as to be free of the wearers body, substantially as described.
3. A pistol holster of the character described including a blank forming a body and having a' base made in one piece with the upper edge thereof and folded over rearwardly on said body, means for attaching the body and base together, said blank also having formed in one piece therewith and at one side thereof a flap, said flap being bent over on the front face of said body and forming therewith a case in which the pistol is received, a strip extending lengthwise in said case at one side thereof and having a beveled'edge next the pistolv barrel for conforming substantially to the curvature thereof, said strip being adapted to engage the magazine and hold the pistol with the handle extending outwardly at an angle to the body of the wearer, means for securing said flap and strip to said body, said strip having a slot therein for receiving the magazine-releasing pin, said flap having a slot therein for admitting the finger of the wearer to the pistol trigger, and a rela- V tively narrow strap for engaging over the pistol hammer to hold the same in place in the holster, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, I affix my signature. I
WALTER H. SHELTON.
