FREDERICK A. SCI-ILANGER, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED CHAIR AND DESK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 26, 1917..
Application'filed September 17, 1914. Serial No. 862,205.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK A. SoHLANeER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New York, county and State of New York, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Combined Chairs and Desks, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact specification.
This invention relates more particularly to a class of furniture and has for its object primarily to provide a combined chair and desk adapted to be used especially in public places and the like whereby a person may conveniently write, or read, etc, While resting comfortably without requiring the pro vision of separate articles of furniture,'and wherein is employed a desk adjustably connected to a chair so as to be capable of being swung to various positions to and from the front of the chair, the desk being composed of two superposed leaf members one of which is adapted to be elevated relatively to the other to different inclined positions so as to meet the requirements of the occupant of the chair.
Another object of the invention is to provide on the swinging leaf members of the desk means serving to adjustably retain the leaf members when in adjusted positions; and a further object of the invention is to provide a combined chair and desk of simple and efficient construct-ion, and which is susceptible of being made in various sizes and designs.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in invention being more fully described hereinafter, and then pointed out in the claim at the end of the description.
In the drawing, Figure 1 is a side elevation of one form of combined chair and desk embodying my invention.
Fig. 2 is a top plan thereof.
Fig. 3 is an enlarged perspective view of the desk used in conjunction with the chair, and
Fig. 4 is an enlarged end view of the desk.
The combined chair and desk, includes a chair, as 10, which may be of any well-known as well as being of any desired shape and size. To the underside of the seat 11 of the chair 10 is swiveled, at 12, one end of a swinging supporting member, or bracket 13 type all the views, the said which is composed of three right-angularly disposed arms 14;, 15, 16, the arm 15 standing vertically, while the arms 14 and 16 extend horizontally, and stand at, or nearly at, a right angle to one another, in a horizontal plane, so that while the arm 14- extends from the lower end of the arm 15 below and toward the center of the seat of the chair, the arm 16 extends from the upper end of the arm 15 alongside of the chair and maintains approximately this relative position, whatever the radial direction of the arm 14 from the center of the seat. The normal position of the arms is shown in Fig. 1 and in full lines in Fig. 2, the arm 14 extending in a rearward direction, so that arm 15 extends upwardly approximately beside one of the rear legs of the chair, and arm 16, which is crooked slightly, as indicated in Fig. 2, to give it a shape conforming more particularly to the shape of the chair, extends forwardly beside the chair to suitably carry a desk. The upper arm 16 of the bracket will then extend longitudinally toward the front of the chair, and this arm is spaced sufficiently above the arm 14 of the bracket whereby it will be a suitable distance above the seat of the chair. The upper arm 16 of the bracket is also of a length so that when the bracket is swung on the swivel 12 of the chair oppositely to its normal position, as will be hereinafter more fully explained, the forward end of the upper arm will be placed at suitable positions relatively to the front of the seat of the chair.
At the free end of the upper arm 16 of the swinging bracket 13 is provided aswivel, as 17, of the usual, or any preferred form, and to this swivel is secured the underside of a desk 18 so as to be horizontally rotatable relative to its support. The desk 18 has two superposed leaf members 19 and 20 which are preferably substantially rectangular in shape, and one of the corresponding ends of these leaf members are hinged together, at 21, so that the upper leaf member maybe elevated on an incline relatively to the lower leaf member whereby the desk may be adjusted for convenient use by the occupant of the chair.
Serving to hold the upper leaf member 20 of the desk against movement when in an adjusted position, I provide a retaining device, as 22. The retaining device 22 may have one, or two alined toothed racks, or bars, as 23 and 24, projecting upwardly in spaced parallel arrangement from the top surface of the lower leaf member 19 of the desk, and both ofthese racks extend longitudinally of this leaf member. To the underside of the upper leaf member 20 adj acent to its end which is opposite to the hinge 21 is pivoted by H of Spaced straps, as 25 and 26, the upper cross-arm 27 of a substantially square hoopshaped supporting member, or bar 28 having a lower cross-arm 29. The supporting bar 29 is adapted to be swung between the leaf members of the desk to and from the hinge 21 for engaging the teeth of the racks 23 and 24, and to permit the supporting bar to be manually adjusted in this manner from the central'part of the upper cross-arm 27 thereof is a finger 30 extending at a right angle from the bar outwardly of the free end of the upper leaf member 20 of the desk.
When it 'is desired to use the desk for writing, reading, or other purposes by the person occupying the chair by guiding the desk accordingly it will be rotatably moved on the swivel 17 to a suitable position at the side of the chair, or the desk and the supporting bracket 13 may both be swung in unison on the swivel 12 as well as on the swivel 17 to a desired position in front of the chair, as shown in Fig. 2 in dotted lines. .heupper leaf member 20 of the desk may then be elevated on an incline relatively to the lower leaf member 19, and by moving the finger 30 of the swinging bar 28 this bar may be adjusted so as to engage the proper teeth of the racks 23 and 24-. to retain the upper leaf member in its adjusted position. When the desk is not in use, or if desired to employ it, for instance as a table, the upper leaf of the desk may be lowered to lie fiat over the lower leaf by moving the finger 30 so as to swing the bar underneath the leaf 20 of the desk, this leaf having in its underside a recess, as 31, for reception of the bar 28 and the racks 23 and Copies of this patent may be obtained for upwardly- 24: when the leaves of the desk are closed together. Moreover, the upper leaf 20 of the desk may be fashioned so as to accommodate an ink well, pens, or pencils, if desired.
In the foregoing description, I have embodied the preferred form of my invention, but I do not wish to be understood as limiting my self thereto, as I am aware that modifications may be made therein without departingfrom the principle, or sacrificing any of the advantages of this invention, therefore I reserve to myself the right to make such changes as fairly fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent In a combined desk andchair, the combination with a chair seat of a U-shaped bracket having one end thereof pivotally mounted on the under side of said seat, and a desk pivotally mounted on the free of said bracket; said desk comprising upper and lower leaves hingedly connected together at one edge thereof, racks on the upper face of the lower leaf, spaced straps on the under side of the upper leaf, a square hoop-shaped supporting member having one side portion thereof swingably connected to the said straps and having its opposite side portion adapted'to engage the said rac s to determine the degreeof elevation of said upper leaf, and a finger rigidly attached to the hinged portion of said supporting member between the said straps and projecting beyond the outer edge of the said upper leaf whereby it may be manually operated for manipulating the said supporting member.
This specification signed and witnessed this sixteenth day of September, A. I). 1914.
