i FTC BAG-TIE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Oct. 16, 1917.
Application filed April 24, 1917. Serial No. 164,144.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WAYNE TAGGART, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hopedale, in the county of Harrison and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bag-Ties, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to devices for holding the open ends of bags of canvas and like material, and has for one of its objects to provide a simply constructed device which will securely hold the open end of the bag when closed and at the same time provide a hand grip whereby the bag may be moved from place to place.
l/Vith these and other objects in View, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction, as hereinafter shown and described and then specifically pointed out in the claims; and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the invention Figure l is a detached perspective view of the improved device.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation on a reduced scale of a portion of a bag with the device applied.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the drawings by the same reference characters.
The improved device comprises an endless member 10, preferably in elliptical shape, and connected by transverse bars 1112, the bars being disposed across the narrow or shorter diameter of the member 10. By this arrangement semi-circular openings are produced between the bars 1112 at each side, and the member 10. The bar members 1112 are located upon the opposite faces of the member 10 so that the bars project beyond the lines of the member 10 at each side, leaving a space between the bar members to reduce the weight as shown more particularly in Fig. 1. The body of the bag is represented as a whole at 13, and when the improved device is to be applied the material surrounding the open end of the bag is folded in the ordinary manner and thrust through one of the spaces between the bars l1-12 and the body 10 and the portion of the folded part of the bag which extends beyond the device passed over the bars 11 or 12 as the case may be and thrust through the opposite space between the bars and the member 10, as illustrated in Fig. 2. The surplus portion of the folded bag is then drawn tightly through the member 10 and over the bar which for the time being is presented outwardly to cause the portion of the member 10 which is next to the body of the bag to press upon the latter. This movement also bends the loose folded material of the bag over the relatively sharp edges of the bar, and effectually prevents the device from working loose. The bag is thus efiectually held in closed position, while at the same time the fastening device forms a hand grip to enable the bag to be moved from place toplace.
The members 10l112 will preferably be integral and cast or otherwise formed of copper, brass or other metal compounds, malleable iron, steel or any other suitable metal or metallic compound.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be inexpensively manufactured and sold at a relatively small price.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is: e
1. A bag holder comprising an endless member having a rigid bar extending transversely thereof, the outer faces of the bar projecting from end to end thereof beyond the lines of the endless member, whereby the material of the bag when inserted through the endless member and over the bar is deflected laterally thereby.
2. A bag holder comprising an endless member having a rigid barextending transversely thereof with its edges angular, the
outer faces of the bar projecting from end to end thereof beyond the lines of the endless member.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature.
