GATE-SUPPORT. f i' vSpecification of Letters Patent.
rau-mma oet. 23,1917.
Application fue@ september as, i916. serial no. 122332.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, THOMAS R. GREENE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Texarkana, in the county of Miller and State of Arkansas, have invented certain useful Improvements in Gate-Supports, of which the following is a specification, referenceV being had therein to thev accompanying drawing.
This invention has for its object the provision of a gravity controlled means for supporting a gate, barn door or the like in a manner to prevent sagging of the same, and to further relieve the hinges or other supports therefor of undue strain.
In carrying out the invention I further aim to provide a support of the above men tioned character which permits ofthe closure member which may be either a gate or door being easily opened and closed, and further operating to hold the closure member in either o-f its respective positions and serving to facilitate the opening of the closure member subsequent to its release from a closed position.
Among the other aims and objects of this invention may be recited the provision of a device of the above character with a view to compactness, and in which the number of parts are few, the construction simple, the cost of production low and the efliciency high.
Other objects as well as the nature, characteristic features and scope of this invention will be more readily apparent from the following description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and pointed out in the claim forming a part of this specification.
In the drawings forming part of this specification like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views and wherein Figure 1 is a side elevation of a gate showing one method of supporting the latter.
in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary top plan view. While the support forming the subject matter of my invention is shown and described in connection with a swingable gate, I desire to have it understood that 1t is also susceptible -for use with barn doors or thel like, and its general application iscontemplated by the claim.
Referring to the drawings 1n detail, 10
indicates'a gate which maybe 'of any suitable construction a-nd which is `supported by Vhinges 1l upon the post 12 which permits -the gate to` swing between the `respective :posts 12 and 13. Rising from the upper 'rail of the gate 10 at appropriate points adjacent the opposite end of the gate are spaced eye bolts 1d and 15 respectively, each Yof which has swivelly connected thereto through the instrumentality of a staple 16, a pulley 17. An eye bolt 18 is secured to the post 12 an appropriate distance above the upper edge of the gate, and has secured thereto one end of a flexible element 19 such Vas a chain or the like, and which element extends downwardly as at 20 passingbeneath the pulleys 17 in parallelism with the upper edge of the gate. The flexible element passes from the last pulley 17 upwardly in the direction ofy the upper end of the post 12 and is trained over a pulley 21, which latter is swivelly supported by an eye bolt 2Q, which depends from a cross arm 23at the upper extremity of the post 10. Suspended from the opposite terminal of the lieXible element 19'is a weight 24 whose function is primarily to prevent sagging of the gate and to relieve the hinges thereof of undue strain.
The weight is further adapted to hold the gate normally in its closed position, but when it is properly balanced it will serve equally as well to hold the gate in its opened position. f
It is believed that from the foregoing description the nature and advantages of the invention will be readily apparent'without requiring a more extended explanation and therefore the same has been omitted; however it is desired to have it understood that such changes in the construction and arrangement of parts may be resorted to when desired as fall within the scope Vof what is claimed.A It might also be added that any one of the different forms of the invention herein shown and described can be easily applied to a gate or door without necessitating a cross bar connected VVto the upper edge of the post and arranged at rightr angles tothe plane ofthe'member when the member is in a closed position, two pulleys swivellyk lio connected to the upper edge of the closure member and positioned adjacent the respective ends thereof, another pulley pendently supported from the under surface of the arm adjacent one end thereof, a cable one end of which is rigidly connected to the post adjacent the upper edge thereof, theeable being extended downwardly and operatively trained about the inner and outer pulleys on the closure member and thence extending outwardly and trained about the pendently supported pulley on the cross bar, and a Weight carried by the depending portion of the cable continuing from the pendently supported pulley for eoperating With the cable in exerting parallel and lateral force on the ,Closure member to prevent sagging ot the closure member to relieve strain on the connecting means of the closure memben.
vand in addition hold the closure member in either an open Vor Closed position and to facilitate opening of the closure member subsequent to the release thereof.
ln testimony whereof I atHX my signature.
THOMAS R. GREENE.
