MATTRESS.
1. 245 244 Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Nap;- 6, 19153 Application filed May 12, 1915. Serial No. 27,479.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. Lavnzzi, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mattresses, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a mattress and the object thereof is to provide a suitable construction of mattress characterized by the employment of mattress sections and a cover which incloses the same and is closed except for a sutlicient space at one or both sides for the removal or insertion of a section at a time.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a perspective of mymattress; Fig. 2 a longitudinal section thereof on the lines 22-of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 a detail View of the fastening means for the cover; and Fig. 4: a detail view showing one of the sides open for the withdrawal or introduction of a. mattress section.
Referring 'to the embodiment of my invent-ion as herein shown the mattress proper is made of a suitable number of sections which are here three in number and marked 1, 2 and- 3. These sections fit side'by side and in the same plane and are inclosed by means'of the cover 4. which is preferably made of two sections sewed together at the seam 4* around all sides except at least one side although, if desired, two opposite sides may be thus left open. This open side is provided with means which can be readily opened and closed for the introduction or I'GIDOXZII of the mattress sections one at a time.
As shown in Fig. 3 and by preference the edges of the two parts of the cover are turned over several times and provided withthe socket 5 and button 6. As shown the seam 4* extends part way down the side of the mattress from each end and the open space therefor runs a sufiicient distance in the intermediate portion to permit of enough opening for the introduction or withdrawal of a mattress section as indicated in Fig. 4.
It will be understood that the making of.
the mattress in sections permits any one or. all of them to be removed for the purpose of cleaning or restoring them to original shape in case they should become flattened or wadded down and also permits'them to be replaced in the same order or any different-order. Also by preference the sections are made of the same size so that the space between them will always come at the same place relatively to the body of the occupant. I claim: I 1. A mat-tress comprising a series of sec tions arrangedside by side, and a cover having an opening extending along the center portion of one side, said opening extending part way only of the length of the cover and leaving a pocket at each end for the reception of the end sections of the mattress and permitting the introduction and withdrawal of the mattress sections.
2. A mattress comprising a series of sections arranged side by side, and a cover having an opening extending along the center portion of one side intermediate the planes of the top and bottom, said opening'extending part way only of the length of the cover and leaving a pocket at each end for the reception of the end sections of the mattress and permitting the introduction and withdrawal of the mattress sections.
3. A mattress comprising a series of sections arranged side by side, and a cover having an opening extending along the center portion of one side intermediate the planes of the top and bottom, said opening extending part way only of the length of the cover.
. and leaving a pocket at each end for the reception of the end sections of the mattress and permitting the introduction and withdrawal of the mattress sections, and means for detachably holding the cover closed at such opening.
SAMUEL J. LAVEZZI. I Witnesses:
I. C. LAMBERT, ROBERT DOBBERMAN.
