Patented Apr'. 16, 1918.
iAppli'cation led July 16, 1917. Serial No. 180,756.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN W. Fenner, a -citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and.
State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Hangers,
of which thel following is a specification.
This invention-pertains to an improvement in pipe hangers, and the invention consists in a hanger which, in its simplest form, has the pipe supporting and gripping portions made of separable sections adapted tov `be conveniently assembled and separated,
and which are self-locking and require no bolts or screws or other extra devices to hold Y the parts together in operating relations.
In the accompanying drawin s, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a dou le form of the hanger, adapted to engage ory support two pipes, one above the other, and in which the invention is practically duplicated.
'Fig 2 is a side elevation of-the upper' or main section as seen in Fig.` l without the bracket at the top. Fig. 3 is a side elevation of the lower or coperating section, and Fig. 4 is a longitudinal central sectional lelevation of the invention in its simplest form, conslstlng of two vsections and as4 shown suspended froml the upper holder in Fig. 1.
vA complete hanger, as thus shown, consistsl vessentially of the two pipe grlpping or engaging sections or members a and b. these the section a may be termed the main or upper section or member, and the section b as the lower or auxiliary section or member, and both said sections or members are preferably made from-a suitable grade of sheet steel, struck up by means of dies into blanks of the desired shape or form and then bent flatwise at their lower ends into a substantially semi-circular shape but with length of curvature suicient to overlap more or less in engagement upon a pipe.
Sectiona is duplicated in Fig. 1 barring a slight change in its lower en d, and the said section has a flat body portion provided with a lengthwise slot or opening 3 starting a slight distance ,fabove its curved or bent portion 5, while Asection b has a T shaped tongue 6 adapted to be entered through said slot and to be locked therein when turned atwise on section a to working position, as
plainly seen in the drawings.
Al feature of this self-locking 4mechanism consists in the inward curvature or bend of the stem 7 of tongue 6, which brings the cross portion or wings of the tongue and the portion 8 below said stem 7 iatwise against opposite sides of shank 2, and when thusl engaged and section b is drawn down under the weight of the load the said section is` really suspended through its own interlock-- ing engagement with or through slot 3 and the pull thereon by the weight of the pipe is carried by its own curvedv portion rather than by the portion 5 of the main section. However, in order to fix the workin relationsand engagement of said parts, provide a lug or tooth 9 on the curved bottom yportion 10 of section b which engages in a corresponding hole 11 in the curved portion 5 of section a and thus. further locks said parts together.
A pair of brackets 12 at the top of section a serve to affix the same to a support, and
if a second or third hanger is to be 'aiiixedto j the first or upper hanger the said upper hanger is provided with an extension 15 at its bottom below the pipe engagin bend vor curve thereon. Otherwise the hangers in Fig. 1 are really alikef'" What I claim is: v
As a new article of manufacture, a ipe hanger consisting ofV a main part-an an auxiliary part :formed from fiat sheet metalv and provided with segmentally vcurved pipe engaging portions in overlapped relations to uplicated support the pipetherein, and said main part .having a fiat upper portion provided with a longitudinal slot and the Vauxiliary part f having a T-shaped tongue adapted to be engaged through and interlocked with said slot, the stem of said tongue being bent at its4 passage through the slot to bring the cross portion thereof and the flat portlon of said part at its base -flatwise against the flat sides of the mainpart of the hanger and thesaid mam therein. I
`Signed at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga, and State of Ohio, this 9th day of July, 1917. JOHN W. FARLEY.
