R. F. WHITNE HIDE AND LEATHER WORKI APPLICATION FILED SEPT- UNITED STATES PATENT ROBERT F. WHITNEY, on WINCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR To W ITNE MACHINE COMPANY, or WINCHESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, A CORPORATION.
HIDE AND LEATHER WORKING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 12, 1918.
Application filed September 20, 1917. Serial No. 192,312.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. WHITNEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVinchester, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hide and Leather \Vorking Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in hide and leather working machines and its object is to provide a machine adapted to thoroughly unhair and work out the hide or leather and thereby avoid the necessity of completing the work by hand as is required with the machines now in use.
As is well known, the hairs with their cells on hides and skins grow in various directions and, as is equally well known, to properly remove these hairs and cells it is necessary to operate the knives or blades against rather than with them or, in other words, figuratively speaking, to work against the grain. With the machines now in use equipped with rotary bladed cylinders,
: or with fixed scraping blades, work on the stock is all in one direction only, the hide or skin being operated upon one-half at a time, the result being that it becomes necessary to complete the work by manually removing those hairs and cells not removed by the machine blades.
The present invention overcomes to a great extent this defect found in these machines by providing for their simultaneously working the stock in opposite directions.
The invention is illustrated by the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is an end view of the machine;
Fig. 2 is a detail view of a work roll furnished with helical spreading blades in combination with flanged working blades; and
Fig. 8 is a detail view of a work roll furnished with flanged working blades.
Before describing the machine and its operation, it may be stated that the improvement is applicable to all those machines in which a hide or skin is placed on a bed roll,
a table, or a bar, which is movable to and away from the work roll, or bladed cylinder, and the feed roll, which movement, as well as the rotation of the rolls, may be accomplished in any of the various well known ways. Inthe present instance the drawings show a frame 1 in which are rotatably mounted the work roll 2 with its shaft 3 and the feed roll 4 with its shaft 5, while the bed roll 6 with its shaft 7 is rotatably mounted in swinging arms 8 pivoted to the frame at 9. These rolls are geared in any manner desired to rotate in the directions indicated by the several arrows, it being customary to drive the work roll 2 by a belt (not shown).
This invention consists in adding to the combination described, or to any other similar combination, the supplementary work roll 10 with its shaft 11 rotatably mounted in the frame and driven by any suitable means, as for example by a belt (not shown) in the direction opposite to that in which the work roll 2 is driven, as indicated by an arrow.
The supplementary work roll 10 is preferably furnished with flanged blades 12 mounted on rubber pads or cushions 13 and fastened to the roll by bolts 14 extending through the flanged blades and the cushions into the roll; but any other form of work roll may be used.
While the work roll 2 usually found in these machines is working upon the stock in one direction, the supplementary work roll accomplish the object of the invention, it is side of the bed roll and adapted to operate necessai'v that said roll 10 travel faster than simultaneously, but in opposite directions, the bed roll. upon the same side of a hide, skin, or other 10 I claim: stock, as it is carried past them. 5 In a machine of the character described, In testimony whereof I have aflixed my in combination, a bed roll; a feed roll; and signature. two Work rolls adjacently disposed at one ROBERT F" WVHITNEY.
