To all whom it may concern:

Be it knownthat 1, PETER N. SHrN E, a subject of the King of Hungary, residmg at Detroit, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ambulances, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.

The primary object of my invention 1S to provide an ambulance that may be used as a temporary hospital for treating a num ber of patients disposed on cots convenient A to the attendants of the ambulance, which is equipped for rendering first aid to the in--' jured.

Another object of my invention is to provide a vehicle chassis with a hospital body having a central aisle with cots disposed at the sides thereof, all of'the cots being removable and some of the cots superposed relative to others, thus providing a compact.

arrangement which permits of a number of wherein patients being readily attended to by the attendant of the ambulance.

A further object of my invention is to furnish an ambulance body with cot carriers that may be raised and lowered, the carriers being lowered to receive cots and then raised so as to provide clearance for additional cots thus increasing the capacity of the ambulance. i

The above and other objects are attained by a' vehicle which will be hereinafter specifically described andthen claimed, and reference will now be had to the drawings,

The ambulance body comprises a floor 1, side walls 2, a front wall 3, a rear wall 4, and a roof 5, saidside walls 2 having windows 6, and said rear wall 4 having a door or doors 7 which may also be provided with windows. i

On the floor 1 at theside walls 2 are benches 8 providing a central aisle 9, and at the inner end of the aisle 9 and supported bythe front wall 3 is a basin 10, a cabinet 11, a water tank 12, and a soap tank 13. The elements 10 to 13 represent accessories that will permit of the attendant of the ambulance body rendering first aid to injured placed in the body.

On the benches 8 are rails 14 for the casters 15 of cots 16, said cots having the ends thereof provided with handles 17 and 18. The handles 18 are notched or provided with keepers to receive gravity pawls 19, which hold the cots 16 relative to the benches preventing accidental shifting of the cots during movement of the ambulance body On the inner sides of the walls 2, are vertically disposed channel rails 20* and slidable on these rails are outwardly extending brackets 21'that may have anti-frictional .wheels or rollers 22 to travel-on the rails 20. The brackets 21, at each side of the ambulance body are connected by longitudinal frames 23 provided with rails 24, and a cot 25, similar to the cot 16, is supported by said rails.

Suitably connected to each of the brackets 21, as at 26 are the ends of cables 27, said cables extending upwardly over sheaves 28 carried by the side walls 2 of the ambulance body. The cables 28 extend downwardly between the walls 2 and the cots 25and 1 6 into the benches 8 where said cables are trained under and between sheaves 29 and 30 supported by the walls 2 and the benches 8 respectively.

The ends of the cables 27 are attached to and adapted to be wound on drums 31 supported by the benches 8 within the central aisle 9,said drums being associated with a ratchet mechanism forming the subject matter of a pending application.

From the foregoing, it will be observed that when the lower cots 16 are removed, the brackets '21 may be lowered to receive the cots 25 or permit of said cots being easily removed from the rear end of the ambulance body.

One embodiment of my invention has been illustrated, but it is to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations and modifications as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

What I claim is i 1. An ambulance body comprising afloor, walls, and a roof, benches on the floor of said body longitudinally thereof providing a central aisle therebetween, removable cots on said benches, movable brackets carried by the side walls of said body and normally overhanging said benches, removable cots on said brackets, and means on the side walls of said body and extending under said benches into the central aisle ofsaid body adapted for raising and lowering said brackets. I

The combination of an ambulance body, benches on the floor thereof providing a central aisle, movable brackets overhanging said benches, removable cots on said brackets, and means in said body extending under said benches and operable in the central aisle thereof adapted for raising and lowering said brackets.

3. The combination of an ambulance body, benches on the floor thereof, rails on said benches and the inner longitudinal side walls of said ambulance body, removable cots on the rails of said benches, movable brackets on the rails of the side walls of said ambulance body and overhanging said benches, rails supported above said brackets, removable cots on said rails, and means connected to said brackets and extending along the walls of said ambulance body and downwardly under said benches adapted to be operated in said ambulance body for raising and lowering said brackets;

4. The combination of an ambulancebody, benches on the floor of said ambulance body, removable cots on said benches and provided with handles, gravity pawls connecting the handles of said cots to the front wall of said ambulance body, removable cots above the first mentioned cots, and means operable at said benches adapted for raising and lowering the last mentioned cots.
