IMPROVEMENT IN LAP-BOARDS.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 128,739, dated July 9, 1872.
To all whom it may concern: F,by means of hinges G, Fig. 3, whereby said Be it known that I, SARA MAIIAN, of Clevelegs can be folded up under the board, as in- Vland, inthe county of Cuyahoga and State of dica'ted by the dotted lines a, for the con- Ohio, have invented a certain -new and Improved Lap-Board; and I do hereby declare i that the following is a fulljclear, and complete description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing making part of the same.
Figure 1 is a top view of the table. Fig? 2 is a side view. Fig. 3 is an end View.
Like letters of reference refer to like parts in the several views.
SPECIFICATION.
The nature of this invention relates to a lap-board, and the object thereof is to provide said board with legs, -so that it may rest partially upon the floor, thereby relieving the person using it from bearing the whole weight upon the lap, and at the same time be retained in a more horizontal position, and with greater firmness 5 and it also relates to a device whereby said board or table is made fast to the body of the person, so that it cannot slip from the lap. Of said invention the f0llowing is a more full and complete description:
In Fig. 1 A represents the table or lapboard, which may be of the shape shown, or
of any other that may be desired. B is al bay cut out from the edge of the board, so that it may iit around the body while it is being held in the lap, and which is attached thereto in order to prevent it from slipping away or off from the lap by a strap, G. One end of said strap is secured to the table by a ring and eye, D, whereas the opposite end is attached thereto by a hook, E. To the front side of the board is attached apair of legs,
venience of being placed away. Lap-boards, as usually made, are without legs, and hence they must be supported upon the knees of those who use them, which'is often very tiresome and inconvenient, as the tendency of the board is to slip from the lap, and more especially should the person move in reaching over it. It is also difficult to hold the board in a horizontal position for any considerable time, as the limbs become weary from their being in one position. To avoid these objections of the ordinary lap-board, I secure the board to the body by the strap C, thereby preventingit from sliding from the lap should the further side become the lowest-in consequence of changing the position of the limbs; and I also keep it in a horizontal position by the legs, which rest upon the door, l
thereby relieving the limbs from supporting it, which will in consequence be free to be moved about as the ease of the person may require. The legs are held in position by bracehooks H, as shown in Fig. 3.
Claim.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The herein described lap board, having hinged thereto the legs F, connected to each other, as described, brace-hooks H, and strap C, as and for the purpose set forth.
