BOOT 0R SHOE.
Application filed September 13, 1918. Serial No. 253,863.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELLA LOUISE SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Roanoke, in the county of Randolph and State of Alabama, has invented certain new and useful Improvements in Boots or Shoes, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in boots or shoes, and it consists in the combinations, constructions and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a boot or shoe which may be made virtually out of one piece of material, unless one desires a stiff heel or sole, in which case said heel or sole may be added.
A further object of my invention is to provide a simple means for making shoes for dolls, which can be made up cheaply and in large quantities.
A further object of my invention is to provide a boot or shoeof pleasing'appearanoe which is cheaply made.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification. and the novel features of the invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming part of this ap plication, in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of a boot constructed according to my invention;
Fig. 2 is a plan view of a blank for making the body portion of the boot shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is aside view of a modified form:
Fig. 4. is a blank for forming the shoe shown in Fig. 3; and
Fig. 5 is a front view of a laced boot constructed according to my invention.
Referring now particularly to Fig. 2. I have shown therein a blank consisting of a body portion 1 having a heel portion 2, a toe portion 3, lateral extensions i and 5 between the heel and toe portions, and additional extensions 6 and 7, these being provided with securing means. The extension 7 has straps 7 provided with button holes 7, while the extension 6 has straps 6 provided with buttons 6".
. A blank such as that shown in Fig. 2 may be folded and then sewed along the edges as indicated in dotted lines in Fig. 2. The portions 4 and 5, when brought together, are united by the seam 8, while the seam 9 joins the portions 4 and 5 at the toe. The seam 10 joins the portions 6 and 7 at the heel, while the seam 11 runs up the back of the boot joining the rear of the portions 6 and 7. The boot thus made may be used, if preferred, without a stiff heel and sole, but a heel 12 and a sole 13 may be added and may be secured in any suitable manner to the bottom of the boot. The straps 7 may be fastened to the straps 6 by means of buttons 6* in the manner shown in Fig. 1. The upper edge of the boot may be provided with a band 14: in
the nature of a wearing or reinforcing band,
if desired.
In Figs. 3 and s I have shown a shoe of somewhat similar construction. In Fig. 4 the body portion 1 is provided with a heel portion 2", a toe portion 3. lateral extensions 4* and 5 and lateral extensions 6 and 7 similar to those in Fig. 1. In this form of the device there is only one strap provided for each of the portions 6 and 7 the strap on the portion 6 having a button 6 and that on the portion 7 having a buttonhole 7 The seams for uniting the parts of the two are similar to those already described in connection with Fig. 1.
In Fig. 5 the boot portions 4: and 5 are united by a seam 8, while the portions 7 z and 6 have openings or eyelets 15 through which laces 16 may be passed for lacing the boot together. This form of the boot is especially desirable for bathing purposes, or for childrens shoes.
I am aware that the making of the body portion of the boot or shoe from a single blank is not new, and I do not broadly claim such as my invention. The making of the fastening, however, above the ankle integral with the body portion and from the same blank obviates the necessity of providing additional fastening means, such as are ordinarily in use with a device of this kind, and at the same time provides a neat and serv iceable article which can be made at a small cost.
I claim:
1. A boot or shoe made from a single piece of material, havin a central body portion provided with hee and toe portions, integral extensions at each side of the toe portion adapted to be sewed together and to the toe portion, integral extensions on each side of the heel portion, straps carried by each of said last named extensions, the straps on one of said extensions being provided with buttonholes, and a button secured to each of the be sewed together and also to the heel portion.
2. A boot or shoe comprising a central body portion provided; with heel: and=- toe portions, integral extensions at each sideof the toe portion adapted tobe's'ewed" together and to the toe portion, integral extensions on-each side of the heel portion, and integral 10 fastening; means carried by each of said last named extensions, said last named extensions-being adapted to be sewed together and also to the heel portion, thereby bringing the fastening means above the ankleofi the 15 wearer.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature.
