GOMBINATION' -TOOII.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 11, 11919..
Application filed April 28, 1917. Serial No. 165,251.
.and a further object of my invention is to produce a more simple, cheap, and eflicient device of the character described than has heretofore been attained.
To these ends, my invention includes a combination and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts,
Fi e 1 is a side view of my device in close position;
Fig. 2 is a similar view in open position; and
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the pivoted parts disassembled.
My invention includes generally a pair of pivoted members, each of which is provided with a longitudinal shank on one of which is provided a head for driving nails or staples, and on the other of which is provided a claw for pulling nails and staples; a cutting blade carried on the shank of one of the pivoted members and a recess provided on the o posite shank registering with'the cutting lade; a longitudinally extending projection on the outer end of each pivoted member adapted to cooperate with each other to form a clamping plier, said extensions being provided with longitudinal and transverse registering grooves for gripping a wire.
Referring now to the drawings, 1 indicates a pivoted member having a shank portion 2, and an annular late 3 provided with a central orifice by which said member may be pivoted upon its complementary member hereinafter described. Said plate is provided with a longitudinal extension 4: ofiset from the longitudinal axis of, the tool having an outer head 5 adapted to clamp against the complementary head 5' on the opposite member of the tool; said extensions are provided with longitudinal grooves 6, registering with each other and transverse grooves 7 likewise registering, both of which are designed to clamp upon a wire. Said plate 3 is provided with a laterally extending bifurcated claw 8. Adjacent to the plate 3 the shank 1 is provided with a longitudinal groove or recess '9 upon the face opposite to the complementary shank in which the blade 11 may recess when the members are brought into closed relation.
As shown in the drawmgs, the plate 3 is 'cut out to form a flush joint with the opposite plate 3 which is likewise cut out, thus forming complementary sockets for said parts.
The opposite member 12 is formed substantially identical with the member just described, with the exception that it is provided with a laterally extending driving head 13 opposite the claw 8, and as previously stated, is provided with a cutting bllade 11 on the shank registering with the s 0t 9.
As is also shown in the drawing, the adjacent faces of the shank members are transversely scored at 14 for the purpose of forming a clamping surface for grasping wires.
The tool thus described, as will be readily appreciated, forms a compact and composite nail and staple driver, nail and staple puller, wire cutter and plier and wire tightener of unusual strength and utility.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, isg 1. A tool of the character set forth, comprising pivotally connected members having handle shanks and projecting work-engaging elements, and a cutting blade carried by one member, the other member having a channel to receive the blade when the handle shanks are together, said blade thereby constituting a cutter when the handle shanks are separated and relatively moved toward each other and also constituting a holding means for preventing relative lateral displacement of the handle shanks when the handles are together and certain of the work-engaging elements are employed.
' 2. A tool of the character set forth, comprising pivotally connected members having handle shanks rovided respectively with cooperating wor r-engaging elements that are relatively movable when the handle shanks are relatively mo Nd, said members also having work-engaging elements for use when the shanks are together and relatively immovable, and a cutting blade carried by the inner side of one of the members adjaoent to its pivot connection and extending longitudinally of the handle shank of said member, the opposing portion of the other member havin a longitudinally disposed channel to receive the blade when the handle shanks are together, said blade thereby constituting a cutter when the handle shanks are separated and relatively moved toward each other, and also constituting a holding means for preventing relative lateral displacement of the handle shanks when the handles are together and certain of the 15 Work-engaging elements are employed.
In testimony whereof I have afiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses. LEE SPRINGER. Witnesses:
