PIPE SEAL.
APPLICATION FILED MAR-6,1917.
Patented Apr. '15, 1919. 0
J61; C/Zrade JOHN C. SGHRADE, OF BOCKAWAY BEACH, NEW YORK.
PIPE-SEAL.
eonora Specification .of Letters Patent. Patented Apr. 15, 1919. 7
Application filed March 6, 1917. Serial No. 152,732.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN C. SGHRADE, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Rockaway Beach, in the county of Queens and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe- Seals, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to the class of water distribution and has a particular reference to new and useful improvements in seals for vitrified and cement pipe sewers.
The primary object of my invention is to.
provide a closure means forthe' mouth or bell of the vitrified or cement pipe which may be constructed at a small cost, that is adapted to be detached without injury to the pipe, and yet having the desired characteristics to provide a permanent pipe seal if such be desired.
A still further object of my invention is to provide a pipe closure of the class described which is adapted to be used with Y or T branches as-we'll as with the main pipe line.
Other improvements and novel details in the construction and arrangement of the various parts of the apparatus will be brough out more in detail in the description to follow, which, for a clear understanding 4 the deslred airtlght and waterproof closure.
of the invention, should be considered in connection with the accompanying drawing, forming a part hereof, and wherein is disclosed, for the purpose of illustration, convenient and satisfactory embodiments of the invention. It is to be noted, in this connection,-that minor changes in the construction and details of the invention ma be made without departing from the spirlt or scope of the invention.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is aperspective view of my invention, and
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view thereof.
Corresponding and like parts are'referred to in the following description and indicated in all of the views of the drawing by the same reference characters.
My improved pipe seal or closure com-' prises a cap member, designated C in its entirety, having an end portion 11 provided with a concentrically arranged inwardly extending enlargement 12 adapted to be seated at the jointure of the end of the pipe 13 with the mouth or bell portion 14 thereof. A laterally extending flange 15 is provided on the edge of the end portion of the cap member and is adapted to embrace the bell or flared mouth portion and also a part of the pipe. The flange 15 is provided with grooves 16 for a purpose which will be hereinafter described. Semi-circular indentures 17 are provided on the opposite sides of the cap member to permit that portion thereof within the semi-circular indenture to be removed and thus permit the use of my improved cap with a Y or T branch.
To provide means for facilitating the breaking or removal of the end. portion 11, an annular groove 20 is formed therein. Thus by tapping the same with a hammer or other suitable implement, the end may be readily broken from the cap. I
After thecap member has been inserted over the head of the pipe to be inclosed and the enlargement 12 is resting on the end of the pipe adjacent the jointure of the bell or I mouthpiece thereof a piece of oakum or'jute 18 is. inserted between the bell portion 14 and the side of the cap after which concrete 19 is inserted between the exposed end of the cap and the ipe. After the concrete settles and becomes ardened the same will provide When it is desired to remove the cap portion after the same has accomplished the desired purpose, by a strike of the hammer the cap member will break along the groove portion 16 and thus permit the removal thereof. It
is of course to be understood that my cap member is made of concrete or earthenware, having the grooves and indentures abovementioned marked therein before the same has become burned, z. 0., before it has been placed in the roasting furnace.
Havin thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. In a device of the class described, the combination with a pipe and a bell portion provided on one end thereof, of a cap member adapted to embrace the said bell portion and a portion of the pipe and having a plurality of longitudinally extending grooves therein.
2. In a pipe seal, a cap member having a plurality of semi-circular indentures therein providing-means for facilitating the removal of the semi-circular portion Within the'semicircular indentures to adapt the cap member for use With various designed pipes.
3. In a pipe seal, a cap member having a plurality of longitudinal and semi-circular grooves formed in the sides thereof and an annular groove formed in the end thereof, said longitudinal groove terminating at points adjacent the annular groove, as and 10 for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof, I aflix my signature hereto.
JOHN C. SCHRADE.
