WILLIAM n. ALLINGER, or COVINGTON, KENTUCKY.
KNIFE.
` Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Sept. 9, 1919.
Application led .Tune 2, 1917, Serial No; 172,457. Renewed .Tuly 3, 1919. Serial No. 308,534.
To all whom t may/concern.' p Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Ban# LINGER, a citizen of the United States resid* ing at Covington, in thecounty of lenton and State 0f Kentucky, have invented new and useful Improvements in Knives, of which the following is a specification. I
This invention relates to a pocket knife wherein one of theblades is so constructed that it may be employed for scribing` lines upon timbers for use in the construction of frames for houses, boats, and the like.
The primary `object of `the invention is to provide a knifewith a blade for this purpose wherein through the operation of the s ring pressed releasing pin, the blade w1 l `be caused te extend a considerable distance beyond one end of the handle by means 0f a spring arranged within the handle and as* sociated with the blade, thuspermitting the` blade to be moved to an active position more conveniently and with less eiort than is the case with knives of thischaracternow in use. I
Another' obj ect of the invention isto provide the knife with a pin for the purpose stated which also serves to retain the scribing blade within the knife handle when the scribing blade is not in use.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention resides in the novel combination and arran ement of parts, which will be hereinaiter described and particularly pointed out in the claim.
The preferred embodiment of the invention has been illustrated in the accompanyp ing drawing, althouffh no restriction 1s necessarily made to die precise details of construction therein shown, as changes, alterations, and modifications, within the scope of the claim may be resorted to when desired.
In the drawing:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of a knife constructed in accordance with the invention, and showing one of the blades extend-V ing beyond an end of the handle to permit the blade to be employed for scribing lines upon timbers.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the knife, the scribing blade being shown retained within the knife handle by means of the releasing pin.
Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse section on the line 3-.3 0f Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detailed perspective view of one end of the scribing blade.
Like characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views in the drawing.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the letter designates a knife constructed in accordance with the invention and in which the handle 5` comprises spaced sides 6 between which are arranged a pair of frames 7 and 8 receiving therebetween, a parting strip 9, said strip having formed therein adjacent one of itsends a transversely ex-` tending slot 10. I
Pivotally connected with the handle 5 at one end thereof is a blade l1 of the type commonly used in connection with pocket knives and adapted to fold within a channel 12 formed with the handle 5 by the frame 7, said frame being provided with a resilient arm 13 for maintaining the blade 11 in extended position. The iframe 7 has formed therein opposite the slot 10, a re-` cess 14.V f
The frame 8 provides the handle 5 with a longitudinally extending channel 15 into which adj acentthe open end thereof extends la lug 16 on the frame, the other end of the channel being closed by a liller block 17 interposed between the parting strip 9 and one of the sides of the handle, said filler block having formed thereon a stem 1S which extends longitudinally of the channel 15 for the greater portion of its length and is spaced from the sides of the frame 8 as shown.
A second blade 19 which is coextensive in length with the channel 15 is mounted to slide therein and has extending longitudinally thereof for the greater portion of its length, a slot 20 into which the stem 18 extends, said slot being enlarged for a portion of its length, as at 21, to receive therein a coiled expansion spring 22 which is mounted upon the stem 18 and has one end thereof bearing against the filler block and its other end against shoulders 23 formed on the blade by the enlarged portion of the slot 20. The slot 20 is offset at one end, as at 24, with the offset portion registering with the slot 10 and recess 14 when the blade 19 is in retracted position.
The blade 19 is recessed along one side edge for a ortion of its length to provide the blade with a shoulder 25 to engage with the lug y16 and limit the extent towhich the blade may be extended beyond an end of the handle 5 by the spring 22. The blade 19 is notched, as at 26 to form at one end'of ai@ blade, a hook et, ai@ bin 0f which has formed integral therewith along `one side edge thereof, an extension 28 which is spaced from the side of the blade opposite the parting strip 9, said extension is curved transversely throughout its length to extend toward the rear end of the blade and is provided at its lower edge with a cutting edge 29.
A spring pressed releasing pin forthe blade 19 is mounted to slide in the recess 14E in the frame 7 and has extending laterally therefrom between its ends a loekingstud 31 which passes through the slot 10 in the parting strip 9 `and the slot 20 in the blade 19, said stud 31 being received when the blade 19 is in retracted position within the handle within the offset portion 21 of the slot 20, so
thatthe stud through its engagement with the walls of the slot will prevent the spring 22 from moving the blade to an extended position until pressure has been applied to an operating head 32 on the pin to slide the same in the recess 14 in the frame 7 When the blade 19` is in the position `in the handle shown in Fig. 2 .in the drawing and it is desired to employ the knife as a scribing instrument, pressure is applied to the head 3201i the pin y30 to remove the stud 31 from the offset portion 24 of the slot 20, so that the spring 22-may move the blade 19 longitu'dinally of the channel 15 until the shoulder 25 on the blade engages the lug 16.`
lith the blade in this position, the knife may be manipulated to scribe the required line upon the timber to be cut and after which the blade 19 may be forced within the handle V5 until the locking stud again engagesV a wall of the offset portionof the slot 20.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it is at once apparent that a knife has been provided wherein one of the bladesmay be employed as a scrib-ing instrument when the` occasion requires and the pin through wthe operation of Whichthe blade may be moved to an extended position by a spring for this purpose is so arranged and mounted within the handle of the knife as to prevent casual operation thereof to release the blade.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as neW,iis:.
In a knife, a handle, a slidably mounted spring pressed pin projecting from the handle through one side thereof, a y slidably mounted spring pressed plate in Said handle having a longitudinally extending slot therein provided with an oil'set portion at one end, a partition in said handle passing between said in and plate having a tra-nsversely extending slot therein, and a stud `on said pin extending through the said slot in the plate and the slot in said partition.
' In testimony whereof I afx my signature.
. WILLIAMH. BALLINGER.
