ROBERT OLIN PICKENS, OF SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA.
SLASHER-HOOD.
[o all LU/wm t may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT OLIN PICKENS, a citizen ot' the United States of America, and a resident of Spartanburg, county of Spartanburg, and State of South Carolina, have invented certain new and useful. Improvements in Slasher-Il oods, of which the tollowing is a 'full and clear speciiication.
The object of this invention is to provide a hood arranged in such manner with respect to the cylinders and size-box of the slasher thatthe rising vapors vill be col.- lected and carried away so that they will not condense and :tall or drip back upon the yarn and spoil the same, as more fully hereinafter set forth.
In the drawing- Figure l is a side elevation, partly broken away, showing my apparatus applied to a well-known type of Slasher;
Fig. `2 is a vertical sectional view taken through the line 2-2 of Fig. l:
Figs. 3 and 4 are detail sectional views hereinafter described.
Fig. 5 is a view showing the connections of the pipes to a main.
My improved hood is arranged to extend entirely over 'the two cylinders as well as the size-box of the apparatus. It is desirably suspended at each end by a suitable cablev a or other means, and it consists ot a top-wall and two depending side-walls c.
The top-wall and side-walls curve up over the main cylinder, so as to completely hood the upper side thereof. The top-wall is made in sections and bolted to angle-irons d so that the sections may be removed from time to time, when rusted or otherwise worn out, and replaced by new sections.
vThe interior of the hood is divided into two compartments by a baiile-wall e extending across the hood about on a line with the back-edge of the size-box, thereby forming a smaller compartment at the forward end of the hood, directly over th: size-box. Along the lower edge of the baffle-plate l? is formed a condensation trough f which receives the water of condensation formed in the. compartment over the size-box. and delivers it to a suitable discharge-pipe g at one end of the trough. This special condensation chamber and drainage .trough are arranged directly over the size-box because it is at that point where the greatest film of steam or vapor arlses.
The vapor not condensed in the condensa- Speccation of Letters Patent.

tion compartment above the size-box is drawn off through a transverse slot informed in the top-wall thereof, this slot being connected to a funnel-.shapeddome i provided at its apex with an annular flange which is adaptedto be connected to an exhaust pipe (not shown). A similar conical dome z' is formed at the uppermost point at the other end of the hood, c'. e., at a point directly over the center of the main cylinder. These conical dome-shaped exits z' are tobe connected to a tube from which the air is drawn by means of a blower, so that the vapors arising into the hood will be constantly drawn oli from the interior thereof.
Instead of the ceiling hangers a., or in addition thereto, I may support and brace the hood by suitable rods Z connecting Jche respective ends of the hood to the frames of the Slasher apparatus. I prefer also to provide in each depending wall, at a point over the small cylinder, an outwardly-opening door lm to enable inspection of the interior to be had. The exhaust o enings j may be connected up in any 'suitab e manner with a system of exhaust pipes; I prefer to connect these exhaustopenings by means of pipes n to a main o to which the exhaust blower is connected. In practice, these slashers are arranged in rows, and this main 0 serves as a common conduit for the exhaust products of an entire double irow of machines, it being desirable to increase the. diameter or' the main o as it approaches the ian to take care of the increased quantity of exhaust products from the various slashers.
The Vcondensation compartment over the kettle is desirably provided with a depending flap-door p at each side and a similar door p at the end, -which serves to inclose the area above the kettle and thus make the steam rise better into the compartment above. These flaps are arranged to readily swing outwardly and upwardly to permit inspection and manipulation of the devices in the kettle. In addition to these depending flaps p, I may provide the transverse partition e with a depending extension g secured by a slot and thumb-nuts to the partition walls e, so as to have vertical adjustment on said wall; this depending plate g serves to still further house the top of the kettle and to direct the steam up into the condensation compartment. Desirably, the condensation drainage-trou gh j is formed on the lower edge of this depending wall g,
although, as shown in Fig. 2, this trough may be formed integral with the lower edge ofthe wall e,
The nature and scope of the invention having been thus indicated and its preerred embodiment having been speoiiieally deseribed, what is claimed as new is:
1. A hood adapted to be supported over the cylinders and size-box of a Slasher and having openings for removing the vapors from the interior of the hood, said hood bei ing provided with a baffle-plate at a point near the size-box to form a condensation compartment directly over the size-box,- a drainage-trough being provided for said Y condensation compartment.
2. A hood adapted to be supported over the cylinders and size-box and having openings for removing'the vapors from the in-v terior of the hood, said hood being provided with a bafIie-plate at a point near the sizebox to form a condensation compartment directly over the size-box, a drainage-trough being provided for said condensation compartment, and flap-doors -depending from the condensation compartment being provided to house or inclose the space between the size-box and the hood.
3. A hood adapted to be supported over the cylinders and size-box and having openings for removing the vapors from the interior of the hood, said hood being provided with a haine-plate at a point near the sizebox to form a condensation compartment directly ove;1 the size-box, a drainage-trough being provided for said condensation compartment, the transverse inner wall of said condensation compartment being provided with a vertically-adjustable extension depending to a point below the bottom edge of the hood.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiix my A Witnesses:
