EXHIBITING =APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed Juneau, 1917. Serial No. 177,969.
To all whom it may concern:
Be "itknown that I, IIENRY -BAILY, a citizenof the United States, and resident of Mount Vernon, inthe county of Jefferson and State of Illinois, have invented-"certain new and useful Improvements in Exhibiting Apparatus, of which the 'followingis a'speoification.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in exhibiting apparatus, and
the primary obj ect of the invention isto provide a novel and efiicienttype of exhibitor adapted to display pictures, printedmatter, on merchandise, on a pluralityof swin 'a'ble frames, that are normally positioned Wlthin a casing, but which ,areadaptedto swing outwardly for the purpose of display. This outwardly swinging movement of the frames is additionally carried out, by having one side of the casing in which the frames are normally positioned swingable on an axis parallel with the axis on which the frames swing whereby the frames are adapted to swing in a much larger arc than if the side of said casing was stationar Another object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which is easily and simply constructed, inexpensive to manufacture, and one which will be very efiicient in operation.
lVith these and numerous other objects in view,my invention consists of the novel features of construction, combination, and arrangement of parts which will be herein referred to and more particularly pointed out in the specification and claim.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a perspective View of the eX- hibitor with the supporting frames in open position;
Fig. 2 is a horizontal section through the casing when the frames are positioned therein; and r Fig. 3 is a detail end view of the hinge connection with the swingable supporting frame.
In describing my invention I shall refer to the "drawings in which similar reference characters designate corresponding parts throughout the several views.
Referring now, more particularly, to the drawings, there is provided a casing 1 of a rectangular configuration having an open front removably closed by a cover 2. One side 3 of the casing is swingably connected as by hinges 4 to the back of the casing and has the front edge terminating short of the front edges of the top and bottom of the casing, being held in closed position and rocked by the cover 2 when the reduced edges of the "latter are-removably arranged in the grooves provided in turn on the inner faces andnear the frontedges ofthe top, bottom and'stationary side of the casing.
Theexhibitorproper is composed of a plurality of substantially rectangular shaped supporting frames 5, which are slightly smaller than the casing 1, and which are adapted to be positioned therein in juxtaposed relation as clearly shown'in Fig. 5 of the drawings. These frames Qj'hSLVB one of their sides positioned from the movable side 23 0f thecasing, and the same are connected therewith b I a pair of hinges 6, so that the supporting frames may be swung independently of each other when the cover 2 is removed from the casing and the movable side 3 swung outwardly.
Each hinge 6 may be said to consist of a bracket of L-shaped form the lateral butt portion 7 of which is secured to the inner surface of the movable side 3 while the upright portion or pintle 8 removably and rotatably engages the superposed ears of the hinges of the leaves 9, the latter being anchored in turn on the inner portions of the adjacent frames 5. In addition to allowing independent swinging movement of the frames 5 when the movable side is swung outwardly, these leaves are bent so thatthe frames may be accommodated within the casing when it is desired to close the casing and lock the movable side by the cover 2.
The supporting frames 5 are adapted to be formed of any desired material, and may be formed of a single piece or in sections so as to form containers adapted to receive printed matter, or merchandise or the like. The articles or indicias to be exhibited, are secured in or attached to the frames 5 in any desired manner.
In operation, the supporting frames are normally disposed within the casing l in superposed relation, as clearly shown in Fig. 2 of the drawing. The slidable cover 2 is positioned thereover to make theexhibitor absolutely dust-proof. Upon removal of the cover 2, the frames 5 are adapted to be swung outwardly, so as to exhibit the articles or material carried by the frames 5. To facilitate this outward swing and enable the frames 5 to move in a larger arc, the movable Patented D6030, 1919.
This exhibiting apparatus will be found especially useful in school work, for illustrating certain forms etc., although the same is adapted for various other uses. As has been hereinbefore stated, various types of supporting frames 5 may be used according to the goods or indicias which are to be exhibited. This exhibitor is very compact in construction, and when in use may be secured to a wall or the like, in upright position as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawings. Although the casing 1 is shown with a slidable cover 2, it is obvious that various types of covers may be used, as the main object of the cover is to render the device dust-proof, and if necessary the said cover may be eliminated From the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, operation,
and advantages of my invention may be had, and while I have shown and described the invention as embodying a specific structure, I desire that it be understood that such changes may be made in the structure as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In an apparatus of the character described, a casing having an open front and end, an end wall swingingly connected to the casing for closing the open end, said casing at opposite sides and the closed end in their innor faces being formed with a way, a front slidably fitted in the way, and a plurality of leaf sections swingingly supported on the swinging end wall and adapted to normally lie within the casing to be concealed by the front, the swinging end wall being of a width to extend when closed only to the way in the side and opposite closed end.
In testimony whereof, I affix my ture hereto.
signa- HENRY H. BAILY.
