UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.

MESNE ASSIGNMENTS, TO THE FIRST TRUST &. SAVINGS COMPANY, OF CLEVELAND, i OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO, TRUSTEE.
Specification of Letters Patent. 7
Application filed May 26, 1914, Serial No. 841,117. Renewed July 15, 1918. Serial No. 245,070.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, BLUFORD W. BROCKETT and ALBERT L. LORD, citizens of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ironing-Machines, of which the following. is a specification.
This invention relates generally to improvements in ironing machines, and particularly to bosom presses.
More specifically the invention relates to a bosom press comprising a frame, an ironing board mounted thereon, a suitable chest.
supporting bracket carried by the frame, a chest support mounted in said bracket, an ironing chest slidably mounted in said chest support and having a neck band recess, a neck band former mounted upon the ironing board and having a forward portion adjustable along the board for various sizes of neck bands, and suitable means arranged between the neck band former and the ironing chest for adjusting the position ofthc latter with respect to the movable portion of the neck band former, and comprising a cam carried by the forward movable portion of the neck band former engaging a friction roller carried by the chest and thereby moving the chest so that the front edge of the neck band recess therein will just clear the forward edge of the movable portion of the neck band former, the chest when in elevated position normally assuming a position by gravity such that the roller carried by the chest will always engage the cam member carried by the neck band former irrespective of its adjustment.
The invention may be further briefly summarized as consisting in the construction and combination of parts hereinafter set forth in the following description, drawings and claims.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a portion of a machine constructed according to my invention; Fig. 2
is a top plan view of the ironing chest and some of the parts below with parts broken away and in section, the section line being taken horizontally through one of the slots in the chest support and then continued as a section through the parts which receive the pipes; Fig. 3 is an enlarged View of a portion of the ironing board showing the ber and the rear portion of the ironing chest; and Fig. 5 is a detailed end elevation of the upper portion of the machine, as seen from the left in Fig. l. v V
In carrying out the invention any 'pre- Patented Feb. 3 1 920 ferred form and construction of parts may be employed, so long as they possess the necessary characteristics, but I have shownone arrangement which is effective in operation, and in such embodiment 1 represents a frame having an upwardly extending memher 2 for supporting the ironing board 3.
bearings l supporting a shaft 5 provided with a main operating gear wheel 6 adapted to be driven from any suitable mechanism, not shown and not forming a part of the invention. .The frame is also provided at the rear of the shaft 5 with a supporting bracket 7 having a socket or bearing 8 open at the top and for a purpose to be described.
Pivoted to the lower part of the frame or mounted in any suitble manner, not shown and common to this type of machine, is a bar or lever 9 connected by a link 10 with a crank pin 11, and extending from the side of the gear wheel 6. There is one of these levers and links on each side of the machine and they are connected at the top by a suitable cross bolt 12 and by a shaft 13 for a purpose to be described. All of this mechanism is of a'general nature, and hence needs no further specific description.
Extending upward from the head end of guideway 19 of a movable neck band member 20, whichis curved at its forward end to conform to the general configuration of a neck band. Thisneck band member'QO is provided with obliquely disposed guideways 21 adapted to receive slidable bars 22 each of which carries at its rear end a foot-portion 23 fitting in the rear back corners of the neck band member 20 and to finish the general heart-shaped construction of this member, as shown, as 1s usual 1n devices of this sort. Mounted in a suitable recessin -The frame is also provided with suitable the neck band membfll 20 5-3 a pair of mesh;
7 ing gears 2st and 25 j which in turn mesh with suitable teeth 26 arranged on the bars '22. It willbe seen from this gearing that upon a movement of one of the bars the other one will be moved in a similar manner. Mounted in the neck band member and to one side of one of the bars is an operating pinion '27 meshing with teeth on the barhav-i-ng a thumb piece 28 extending above the upper cover member 29 of the movable portion of ztheineok band former. Secured to the gear :is ;a ratchet wheel 30 which cooperates "with a latch 31 shown in dotted lines in iF-ig. and having an operating handle 32 anranged above the cover 29. By the arrangements of the parts it will be seen that upon the operation of the finger piece 28 there will the a relative movement between the bars :22 and the forward movable portion ofthe neck band former.
.Extending from each of the foot portions 'is :a pin SS-engaging in a transverse recess 34 in the upper "face of the projection 1i. Bythis arrangement it will be seen that the foot portions as well as the bars 22 will be held against movement along the face of the board and when the pinion 27 is operated the forward portion of the neck band dormer will move along the board. In this way the neck band 'former is adjusted to various sizes of neckbands.
*Extending upward'from the up oer surface .ofthecove-r plate 29 is a-cam Inem er 35 having a curved front cam edge 36, as shown in Figs. land 4, and this cam face cooperates with friction roller 37 mounted between ears I38 rigid with and preferably forming a part of a longitudinally movable ironing chest 39. The ears 38 are mounted upon theinnerinost portion of the curved wall of the neck band recess a0 which is formed in the head end of the ironingchest. This chest has lateral extensions 41 extending to the side of'the machine, as shown-in Fig. 2, and each is eonnected to a suitable pipe 42. This ipi pe telescopes into a suitable stuffing box -13 forming apart of'a steam connection ist which receives steam from any suitable source. This connection has a shank 45 for .a purpose to he described.
Mounted in the socket or bearing 8 is a short shaft 46 which is extended beyond the ends of :this bearing and is bored out to receive the shanks 45. Between the connections i4 and the ends of the bearing 8 are bearings-r47 integral with arms 48 which in turn are formed integral with an ironing-chest support e9 extending over a portion :of the ironing chest and provided at its side edges with downwardly extending flanges .50 each of which is provided with a pair of slots 51, one toward the front and one wtowa-rd'the :rear, and .each'of these slots receivesa suitable "bolt :52 threaded into the ironing chest. The lateral extensions 41 pass under these flanges. This support is provided with upwardly extending bearing portions or ears 53, shown in Figs. '1 and 5, and these ears receive a shaft 54: pivotally connected to a link member 55. This link member receives the end of a rod 56 secured in another link member 57 pivotally mounted upon the shaft 13.
The arrangement of theparts is such that when the levers 9 are thrown to the rear, as shown in dotted lines in Fi 1,.the ironing chest structure is-drawn into vertical position and moves downward by gravity until the bolts 52 engage the lower ends of the slots 51, as shown. When the shirt is applied and the neck band former has been adjusted in the manner described, which means that the forward portion has been moved forward or backward along the board until the neck band is stretched, then the power is transmitted to the machine in a manner such that the chest is swung over upon the board. In accomplishing this result, however, the
roller 37 engages the edge face 36 of the cam member .35 and the ironing chest automatically adjusts itself to theboard, so that the edge of the neck band recess 40 therein misses the forward edge of the'movable portion of the neck band former. When the ironing member is raised and there is an inclination given to the support 49 the ironing chest gradually moves backward d th roller 37 follows the'edge of the cam until the bolts 52 rest in the ends of the slots.
