FILE-CLIP.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb.3, 1920.
Application filed January 7, 1918. Serial No. 210,659.
To all tlflLOF/L it may concern:
Be it known that I, Enen J HANsnN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles, State of California, have invented new and useful Improvements in File-Clips, of which the.
following is a specification.
lvly invention has relation more particularly to a spring actuated bill clip, provided with a bill impaling hook.
An object of my invention is to provide a novel form of bill clip, comprising two clamping members held in resilient relation to each other, and pr vided with a novel form of hinge construction, whereby the two clamping members will be automatically forced away in parallel relation from each other as bills or other papers are inserted therebetween.
A further object of my invention is to provide a bill clip construction consisting of two clamping members having a novel form of bill iinpaling hook connected to one of s id members, and formed integrally therewith, said hook projecting through an aperture forn'ied in the other of said members. whereby when the two members are forced apart the bills or other papers will be held in position on the impaling hook.
I accomplish the of the device herein described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of my improved clip.
Fig. 2 is a side elevation.
Fig. 3 is a detail plan view of the upper portion of the front clamping members.
Fig. 4i is a detail plan view of the upper portion of the rear clamping member.
Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional detail of one of the connecting hinges of the clamping member taken on line 5-5 of 1.
Fig. 6 is an enlarged sectional detail of the bill impaling hook taken on line 6-6 of Fig. 1.
My improved file clip preferably consists of two substantially flat members 10 and 11, formed of sheet metal and struck from dies. The rear or stationary clamping member 10 is preferably rectangular in configuration, and its upper transverse edge is provided with a centrally disposed arm 12 formed integrally therewith, the extreme outer end of said arm being provided with an aperture 13 for suspension purposes. Arm 12 is preferably bent rearwardly so as to provide above objects by means.
space for the sprin hinges connecting the members 10 and 11 when the clip issuspended from a wall. or other surface. Member 10 is also provided adjacent its edges with a strengthening rib 14, designed to impart additional rigidity to said member when in use.
Clamping member 10, is providedadjacent its upper transverse edge with a pair of ribs 15 and l6 disposed in parallel rela- 'tionto said upper edge, one. on each side of arm 12, forming. spring hinge seats on the rear face. The upper transverse edge of clamping member 10, is formed into a plurality of forwardly projecting tongues 18, 19 and 20, tongues 18 and 19 being disposed to one side of arm 12 while tongue 20 .is on the other side of said arm.
Clamping member 10 is also provided at the center thereof with a strengthening rib 25, which extends downwardly from aperture 13 to approximately the center of the clamping member, a short vertically disposed strengthening rib 26 being disposed on either side of rib 25. l
The body of member 10 adjacent the lower end of rib 25is provided with an impaling hook 26, preferably formed integral with said body member. Hook 26 projects forwardly and preferably at right angles to member 10, being semi-circular in cross section and pointed on its outer end so bills or other papers may be readily inserted thereon.
Clamping member 11 is of substantially the same configuration as, member 10 with the exception that it is shorter in length as clearly shown in Fig. 1 of the drawin This member is also provided adjacentits edges with a strengthening rib 27 and its upper transversely disposed edge is provided with a centrally disposed extension 28 which forms a thumb clamp for operating said member. Member 11 like member 10 is also provided adjacent its upper transverse edge and on either side of the extension 28 with ribs 29 and 30 forming spring hinge seats on its front face. The upper transversely disposed edge is also provided with a plurality of tongues 31, 32, and 33, which are bent rearwardly as best shown in Fig. 4, of the drawings which interlock with tongues 18, '19, and 20, of member 10, by this construction all danger of any lateral movement of one member in relation to the other is avoided. Further, by interlocking the various tongues formed on both members when a large number of bills are inserted between the clamping members 10' and 11, they will maintain a parallel relation to each other, and thus provide room for a great many more bills or papers than could be inserted between the members if the hinge portions were of usual form.
The two clamping members 10 and 11 are secured in resilient relation to each other by means of a pair of split tubular springs 84, 35, the ends of said springs being disposed in the seats 16, 30, and 15, and 29, formed on the upper edge of the members.
Member 11 is also provided with a vertically disposed strengthening rib 86, a shorter rib 37 being disposed on either side thereof. In order to allow the impaling hook 26 to project through the body of member 11, an aperture 38 is formed therein, which aperture registers with a hook when the two members are in normal relation to each other and as shown in Figs. 1 and 6 of the drawings.
Extension or thumb piece 28is bent forwardly a suflicient distance so as to permit of a complete disengagement of hook 26, with aperture 88 formed in clamping member 11 when it is desired to place bills or papers thereon or to remove the same.
From the above it will be observed that l have produced an inexpensive form of bill clip or clamp that will accommodate and securely hold a larger number of papers than similar constructions. Also, by the novel arrangement of interlocking tongues formed on the upper edges of the two clamping members, all danger of accidental engagement of the tubular springs is avoided.
What I claim is:
1. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of clamping members, means to secure said members in resilient relation to each other, and interlocking tongues formed on each member to prevent lateral movement of the same when said members are forced apart.
2. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of clamping members, each of said members having seats at their upper edges for the reception of tubular springs, tubular springs mounted in said seats adapted to normally maintain said members in clamped relation to each other, and intel-locking tongues formed on said members to prevent lateral movement when said members are forced apart.
3. A device of the class described, comprising a pair of clamping members, means -to secure said members in resilient relation to each other, an impaling hook formed on one of said members and projecting through an aperture formed in the other of said members, and means formed on both members to prevent lateral movement of said members when same are forced apart.
In witness that I claim the foregoing I have hereunto subscribed my name this 20th day of December, 1917.
