Description

.1. CHWALIIl CARD 0R TAG HOLDER.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 1919.

JOHN CI-IWALA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
CARD on TAG HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented'Feb. 10, 1920.
Application led April 7, 1919. Serial No. 288,005.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CHWALA, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card or Tag Holders, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a device for holding a card, sign or the like, and adapted to be attached to a receptacle, such as a box, barrel 0r the like, containing merchandise to be sold.
Anmportant obj ect of the invention is to provide a spring element for clamping the device upon the receptacle, this spring element being so constructed that two springs are provided, a stiff spring, and a light spring, the stiff spring contacting with the receptacle at a point farthest from the fulcruin of the spring element and the light spring contacting with the receptacle at a point near the fulcrum, both springs functioning to securely hold the device in place against turning movement.
A- further object of the invention is to provide a spring clamp of the above-mentioned character which is adjustable for engagement with objects of di'erent sizes.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will be apparent during the course of the following description.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which like numerals are employed to designate like parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a rear side elevation of a device embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view, taken on line 2-2 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3 is a horizontal sectional view, taken on line 3 3 of Fig. 1. y
In the drawings, wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown a preferred embodi ment of my invention, the numeral 1() designates a preferably flat plate constituting the body portion of the tag or card receiving member. This plate is provided with ver- -tical longitudinal flanges 11, and a support flange or tongue 12 stamped from the plate 10, near its lower end, as shown. ,The tag or card is inserted in and between the anges 11, and is supported by the flange 12, as is obvious.
:Depending from the plate 10 is a preferably tapered shank 15, carrying a resilient clamp, designated as a whole by the numeral 16. This clamp is formed of a heavy leaf spring 17, having a lower free end 18. This leaf spring is bent near its upper end to provide a horizontal shoulder 19, carrying an extension 20, which is attached to the shank 15, by pins or rivets 21, as shown.
Stamped from the material of the heavy spring 17 is a slight spring 22, having its free end 23 extending in an opposite direction from the free end 18, as shown.
In Fig. 2, the device is shown .applied to a stationary member 24, which may be a portion of a box, barrel or the like. The member 24 is inserted between the shank 15 and the clamp 16, such member contacting with the shoulder 19. The springs 17 and 22 have their free ends contacting with the member 24, but at widely spaced points. The free end 18 of the heavy spring contacts with the member 24 at al point remote from the elements 21 or the fulcrum of the clamp, while the free end 23 of the spring 22 contacts with the member 21 at a point near its fulcrum. By this means the difference in ystiffness 0f the two springs is properly utilized, as an increased strain 1s of course placed upon the free end 18 of the heav Y spring.
It is to be understood that the form of my invention herewith shown and described is to be taken as thev preferred example of the same, and that various changes in the shape, size, and arrangement of parts may be resorted to without departing from the spirit of the invention or the scope of the subjoined claim.
Having thus described my invention, I claim:
A device of the character described, comprising a card holder provided with a shank and a heavy leaf spring secured to the shank and extending outwardly at right angles to the shank to form a shoulder, the free end of the heavy leaf spring being disposed at a point remote from its point of connection with the shank, a light leaf spring stamped from the heavy leaf spring and attached thereto, near the free end of the heavy leaf spring and extending longitudinally of the same, whereby its free end is disposed near the point of connection of said leaf spring and said member, whereby said member may he secured to articles o" varying thicknesses.
In testimony whereof I afix my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
JOHN CHWALA. Witnesses:
JOSEPH BENJAMIN, ARTHUR G. VOLZ.
