To all whom it may concern:
Beit known-that I, GUY'L. WOODJARD, a citizen of the United-States, residing at San Diego, inthecountyof San Diego and State of California, have invented certain new and useful "Improvements in Spring-Oilers, of which the following-is a specification.
My invention .relates'to a device for lubricating springs for vehicles and the like and the objects of my invention are primarily improvements over spring oilers as set'forth in my patentfor spring oiler No. 1,17 8,77 0 patented April=11, 19-16, and a later Patent No. 1,183,416 patented May 16, 1916, and the objects of said improvements are-first, to provide a device of this class with an improved oil retainer in which the oil is confined a longer period of time, second, to providea means for redueingthe .quantity of feltused in the .oil'retainer, third to provide a 11183118 130 be used; in connectionwith the-felt in the end for -preventing the oil from seeping out at the ends, fourth to provide a device of this class which is simple and economical of construction, durable, easy to install and which will not readily deteriorate or get out of order.
With these and other objects in view as will appear hereinafter my invention consists of certain novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions as will be hereinafter described in detail and particularly set forth in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings and to the characters of reference thereon which form a part of this specification, in WhlCh- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the preferred form of the device shown mounted on a spring ready for use. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view through the middle thereof. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through 3-3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4: is a top view of the oil retainer portion of my oiler and Fig. 5 is a longitudinally sectional view of my oiler in a slightly modified form from that of the other views of the drawings.
Similar characters of reference refer to similar parts and portions throughout the several views of the drawings. The casing 1, pads 2 and 3, glue members 4 and retaining shield 5 and oil hole cover 6 constitute the principal parts of my oiler. The casing 1 consists of a rectangularly shaped piece preferably metallic, provided with downwardly extending right angled flanges 1 which are provided with inwardly extending portions 1 along their lower edges. These portions 1 are adapted to fit into the usual slight grooves between the two upper spring leaves and hold the device in position on the upper spring leaf. The main portion is provided at each end withdownwardly extending edges 1 as shown best in Figs. and 5-of the drawings, adapted to hold the oil retainer in position. It is provided with an oil hole 1 which is covered on the inner side with a spring cover 6 which is secured to the casing 1 preferably by a rivet 6". The shield 5 is rectangularly shaped with its sides 5 turned up a short distance and is of proper width to slide between the members I ofthe casing 1 and mounted in each end of this shield 5 is a strip preferably of felt cemented transversely across said pad inclosing the two ends. The outer edges of these strips are provided with a glue sub stance whichprevents the oil from seeping out the ends of this retainer and also secures the strips to the shield 5, thus forming a reservoir between the strips 2 and 3 on the ends and the flanges 5 on the sides. It will be noted that the flanges 5 extend only a little way and that these flanges fit closely against the sides of the casing 1 so that this reservoir may be filled with oil and it will only seep out slowly between the flanges 5 of the members 1 on the casing 1. In the modified form of construction shown in Fig. 5 of the drawings, the structure is the same except that the shield 5 is omitted and the strips 2 and 3 form the ends of the reservoir while the members 1 of the casing 1 form the sides.
Though I have shown and described a particular construction, combination and arrangement of parts and portions I do not wish to be limited to this particular construction, combination and arrangement but desire to include in the purview of my invention the construction, combination and arrangement substantially as set forth in the appended claims.
It is obvious that with this construction there is provided a substantial means for retaining the oil in the sides and ends which is very essential but permits suflicient seepage for proper lubrication. That the glue strips 1 on the ends prevent leakage on the ends through the felt, that the flanges 5 retain a certain quantity of the lubricant which will gradually slop over the sides with the movement of the springs when the vehicle is moving.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a spring oiler the combination of a casing provided with side members adapted to fit over the upper leaf of the spring, a shield with upwardly flanged sides adapted to fit snugly against said side members and a pad secured to said shield in each end thereof.
2. In a spring oiler the combination of a casing provided with side members adapted to fit over the upper leaf of the spring, a shield with its sides flanged upwardly, adapted to fit snugly between said side memhere, a pad secured to said shield in each end thereof, and a coat of glue covering the outer surfaces of each of said strips.
3. In a spring oiler the combination of a casing provided with side members adapted to spring over the upper leaf of a vehicle spring, a flat member with its sides flanged upwardly, adapted to rest on the upper leaf of the spring and its flanged sides fit snugly against said side members and a pad secured to said shield in each end thereof, adapted to be compressed by said casing and seal the ends thereof.
4:. In a spring oiler the combination of a casing provided with side members adapted to spring over the upper leaf of a vehicle spring, a flat member with its sides flanged upwardly, adapted to rest on the upper leaf of the spring and fitsnugly between said side members, a pad secured to said shield in each end thereof, adapted to be compressed by said casing and seal the ends thereof, and a coat of glue covering the outer surface of each of said pads.
5. In. a spring oiler the combination of a casing provided with downwardly extending sides adapted to spring over the upper leaf of a vehicle spring, a strip of felt mounted in each end of said casing of sufficient thickness to be compressed by said casing and a coat of glue on the outer surface of each of said pads.
6. In a spring oiler the combination of a casing provided with downwardly extending side members adapted to spring over the upper leaf of a spring and an oil retarding receptacle with upwardly extending sides and ends adapted to fit in said casing and rest on the top spring leaf with its extending side members resting against the sides of said casing.
