Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 1'7, 1920.
Application filed September 12, 1919. Serial No. 323,255.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY CLAY SUM- MERS, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Medora, in the county of Macoupin and State of Illinois, have invented a new and Improved Button-Fastening, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
This invention relates to new and useful improvements in buttons, and it pertains more particularly to a fastening means therefor.
The primary object of the invention is to provide a button which may be readily attached to and detached from the garment in connection with which it may be used.
A still further object'of the invention is to provide a button in which the fastening means is of the type known as metallic, thus eliminating the process of sewing the button in position.
A still further object of the invention is to provide a fastening means for a button which fastening means may be used as many times as it is desired to attach and remove the button, thus obviating the necessity of using a new fastening means with each fastening operation.
Reference is had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views, and in which- 'Figure 1 is a plan View of a portion of a garment with a button constructed in accordance with the present invention secured thereto;
Fig. 2 is a rear View thereof;
Fig. 3 is a rear view on an enlarged scale, with a portion of the fasteningmeans removed;
Fig. 4 is a sectional view taken on the line l-et of Fig. 1 and on an enlarged scale;
Fig. 5 is a detail view in elevation of a portion of the fastening means, and
F ig. G is an edge view of that portion of the fastening means shown 1n Fig. 5.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, the reference character 10 designates a fragment of the garment in connection with which the button is used, said button being designated by the reference character 11. This button 11 is of any preferred form commonly known, and is provided with suitable apertures 12 for the reception of the fastening means employed.
In the present form of the invention the button 11 is spaced from the garment 10 by means of a washer 13 of any suitable material, and said washer 13 is provided with a plurality of openings so positioned as to aline with the apertures or openings 12 in the button when the washer is interposed between the button and the garment 10 as heretofore stated.
The reference character 14: designates loops of metallic wire preferably of a pliable nature, said wire being employed to secure the button to the garment. In securing the button to the garment, the wires 1% are looped intermediate of their ends to form substantially U-shaped members, and said U-shaped members have their legs passed through two adjacent openings 12 in the button and the corresponding openings in the washer 13. After this has been done, the legs are passed through the garment 10.
The reference character 15 designates a substantially rectangular plate, which is likewise provided with openings 16 arranged in such a manner as to register with the open ings 12 in the button 11 and the openings in the washer 13 in order that the openings 16 may receive the legs of the U-shaped members as they are passed through the garment 10. This rectangular plate 15 is provided with two channels 17, which are pressed into the plate to form elongated recessses 18 arranged in parallel relation to each other, and in which the legs of the U-shaped members are adapted to be received in amanner to be more specifically hereinafter described. As the legs of the U-shaped members are passed through the openings 16, they are bent in opposite directions as indicated by the reference character 20 in F ig. 3, and the free ends of these legs are adapted to lie within the channels 18 heretofore mentioned and as best shown in Fig. 1. The channels 18 are of sufficient depth to permit the free ends of the legs of the U-shaped members to occupy a position in which their outer points will lie flush with the fiat portion of the plate 15, as indicated in F ig. l.
In Figs. 5 and G is shown a guard 21, which comprises a sheet metal member, the opposite side edges of which are bent back wardly upon the body portion to provide guide members 22 adapted to receive the side edges of the plate 15, it being understood that the guides 22 are spaced with relation to the body portion of the guard 21 sullt .cient distance 'to' permit ofthe passage of the plate 15 beneath the guides, and, at the same time, exert suliicient friction to main-.
tain the guard in place on said plates. One
end of the guard 21 is curved as indicated the reference character 23, and ad] acent said curved, end thebody portion 21 of the guard is provided with a circular opening 24, which is provided for the reception of a tool, such as a pin, needle,-or the like,for removing the guard when the latter is in position.
The operation of the device is as follows:
When it is desired to remove the button, the
ends20 of the U-shaped members 14 are bent upwardly outof the position shown in the] drawings, to permit of the removal of said U-shaped members. As the U-shaped members are removed, it will be seen that theseveral partsof the fastening will fall away from the garment 10.
It is to be understood that before the foregoing operation can take place, the guard 21 must necessarily be removed from the plate 15in order that access to the free ends 20 of the legs of the U-shaped members 1 1 may be had. V
- To replace the button, the U-shaped mem- "bers 1a are again forced through the openings in the button 11, the washer 18, and
through the garment 10, after. which the plate 15 is positioned on the legs, and the i free endsl20 bent downwardly into their re spective channels 18 as heretofore described;
After this has been accomplished, the guard 21 isjposition'ed on the plate-15 in such a; a manner that the free ends 20 of the U-shapec members'lt are prevented from engaging with other garments, and, at the same'time,
are prevented from being bent toa position where the button will be capable of falling from the garment and being lost. Q
' In view of the foregoing, it will be apparent that the present invention provides 7 meansby which a button may be readilyats tached to and detached from a" garment withoutin any manner subjecting said garment to injury, and, furthermore, a fasten ing means is provided which may be used over and over again without necessitating the renewal of-any .of'its several parts. v I claim; a 1. A button fastening comprising metallic fastening means adapted to be passed through the button and through the material to which the button is, to be attached, a plate carried by said material on the side opposite to that to which thebuttonis attached,"
said metallic fastening means having their free ends bent into engagement, w th said plate, and a removable guardadapted to em.-
brace the plate to protect the free ends of said metallic fastening means.
2. Avmetallic, fastening forbuttons'comprising a plurality of looped metallic niem hers adapted to be passed through a button and through the garment to which it is. attached, means for receiving the free ends of the metallic members, and meansfor pro.-
tecting the freeends of said metallic menu bers, said protecting means being removably attached to the aforementioned. metallic nels in which said free ends lie, and a guard removably secured to said plate substantially as described.
LIA metallic fastening-forbuttons com- 7 prising a pluralityof metallic loops adapted to pass through said button and the. garment to which it is to be attached, aiperforated metallic loops, said metallic loops having their free ends bent into engagementiwith said plate, and a guard slidably mounted with respect to said plate and carried there by for protecting the freeiends ofsaid me- ,tallic loops, substantially as described.
