Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed aMarch 14, 1917. Serial No. '154,768.-
Z '0 all whom it may concern i 8 Be it known that I, IIARYEY'YOUNG,& citizen of the United States, residing at Seattle,
in the county of King, State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Closures-for Garbage-Gang; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such will enable, others skilled use the same. a 1 a v This'inventmn relates to'new and useful inthe art to whichit appertains to make and improvements in closures for garbage-cans,- and has for its primary ob e'ctto provide a device of this character which prevents the escape of obnoxious odors from the can.
v whereby one member of the cover is revolu- A further object of the invention is to provide a device of this character in whlch all of the material deposited in the closure will be discharged into the can upon the closing operation of the closure. A- further object s to provide means ble within the other for scraping the latter, A still further object is to provide a con struction wherein the cover can be held wide open when it is desired to pour liquid through it.
Referring to the drawing, Figure l is an elevation of a can with the top in place and the cover closed. v
Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the device showing the cover in full linesas in receiving position and 1n dottedlmes as open.
Fig; 3 is a vertical sectional view of the device showing the cover in full linesas dumped and in dotted lines initsclosed position, and
Fig. 4 is a top plan viewof the device with the cover in receiving position.
Referring more particularly to the drawings the'reference character 1 designates a substantially frusto-conical rimyhavingat its lower end an internal annular flange 2 to provide an annular space which receives 7 the upper edge of thegarbage receptacle.v This space maybe provided with suitable packing 3 to prevent the escape of gases from the receptacle. v
'Theupper portion of the frusto-conical rim 1 is open as at 4 and is provided at diametrically opposite points with perforations 5, the purpose of which will be hereinafter described.
' Within said rim is disposed the cover orspherical in contour, and made up .of two members whereof one 1s fixed and the other is movable within the fixed member to, sev
eral positions will be described. The 1 fixed member 6 is slightly less than a hemisphere, its chordal edge standlng upright as aten ed ar-'9, 11920 proper, the same being hollow and glOblllEtlT seen in Fig, 2 and. its body filling the rear' Vportion'of the upper end of the rim 1 to o p which it is secured by rlvets 7 or otherwlsez Themovable member 8 is slightly larger than a hemisphere, its chordal' edge being preferably out off on a slight curvea-s shown, and externally it is of'a size and contour to fit rather closely within the fixedv member so that it may be moved or revolved therein. At its sides it has lateral trunnions 9 rotatably'mounted in the perforations 5 above referred to, and a crank or handle 11 is fixed to the outer end of one trunnion; The inner ends of the trunnion. 5 preferably carry disinfectant containers 10' 7 The upper edge of the frusto-conical rim 1 is provided throughout a portion thereof with packing material 12 which forms a tight joint between saidupper edge andthe movable member 8. The edge of the opening 'in the member 6 is" provided with a packing 13 toform a tight joint between the members 6 and 8.
In operation the device is placed on the 7 upper end of a garbage receptacle, theuppei' I edge of which lies betweenthe flange 2 and the edge of the frusto-conic'al rim as shown in Fig. 2. The crank 11 is operated to turn the movablemember 8 until its open side is positioned upwardlyas shown in Figs. "2 and a and the material is then placed withinfsaid member 8.- When the material has been thus deposited within the member 8 the crank is turned moving said member 8 to the position shown in full lines in Fig. 3 where-V upon the material will be dropped into the garbage receptacle, a little of it possiblybeing deposited on the lower portion of the stationary member 6. Upon further rotation or perhapscomplete revolution itwill be seen that the edge of the 'movable'imemher 8 willengage the inner surface of the member 6 and scrape the same to remove any deposit of material thereon and dis charge the same into the garbage receptacle; After'the cover has thus been employed to receive acharge of garbage, to dump it, and to clean away-the surplus left on the memher 6, the member 8 is returned to its closed position as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 3
V and in full lines in Fig. 1, and the space between the chordal edge of the fixed member and the open forward portion of the rim is tor wants to pass something directly into the receptacle. 'The movable member is now turned by its handle to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 2 so that its chordal edge is substantially vertical, or at least so far above the open forward portion of the rim that the mouth of the latter is exposed, and
the large charge can. be inserted therethrough directly into the receptacle.
'In view of the foregoing it will be seen that the present invention provides a device of this character which owing to the tight joints of all of the movable partsis practically odorless, and provides a clean and sani tar-y closure for garbage receptacles.
Having thus described the invention, what is ClllBIGClEIS new is:
In a closure for garbage receptacles, the
combination with a rim adapted to be fitted L at its lower end over the mouth of the receptacleand having bearings near its upper end at opposite sldes; ofa hollow cover comprising two substantially semispherical inem'berswh'ereof one is fixed withln said rim and rises-above its upper end with its chordaledge substantially vertical and the other, member is offsmaller contour than the first so that it may make a complete revolution therein, trunnions on the smaller member ournaled in said bearings, and a handle connected with one trunnion.
In testimony whereof, I afiix my signature, in the presence of two witnesses;
HARVEY YOUNG. WVitnesses: I V,
THos. P. REVELLE,
E. M. KING.
