Be it known that I, Orrro L. HEMMING, a citizen of the United States,'residing at New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Pocke Knives; and I do hereby declare the following, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawings and the characters of reference inarlred thereon, to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, and which said drawings constitute part of this application, and represent, in

invention consists in a plural-bladed pocket-knife having split-and-sprung coinpensating washers interposed between its handle-iraine anc the shanl-zs of its blades.

For the illustration of my invention, 1 have shown a pocket-knife l shaped handlefranie struck up a single piece of sheet-metal and comprising corresponding side-ranges 2 having rounded ends and a bend 3 forming the back of the knifehandle. This handle-frame receives two blades t and 5 espectively mounted upon rivets 6 and 7 passing through the rounded ends of its side-flanges 2, the said blades being located, as usual, on opposite sides of a plane extending through the center of Specification of Letters Patent.

the knife in the plane thereof. To maintain the blades in these positions, I employ two split-and-sprung compensating washers 8, arangetL diagonally opposite each other on opposite sides of the said plane, and

mounted upon the respective rivets 6 and 7 aforesaid, one of these washers being interposed between one of the side-flanges 2 of the handle-frame and the heel of the knifeblade l while the other washer is interposed between the opposite side-flange 2 of the handle-frame and the heel of the knife-blade 5, as shown in Fig. 2. These washers are formed with slits 9 producing yielding-fingers 10 which are sprung and set as shown in Fig. 7, whereby the washers, when in position, are placed under such tension as to exert a constant effort to hold the knife-blades in their proper relations to each other so that either will close without collision with the other. The friction of the washers also prevents the blades from rattling and takes up wear. Tn curvature the said washers correspond to the rounded ends of the side-flanges 2 or" the handleir me, the lower ends of he washers being shaped as in 11 to engage with the inner face of the back at of the handle-frame, whereby the washers are prevented from turning. A double-ended bowed spring 12 located within the handle-frame and resting upon the baclr. thereof, engages at its respective ends with the shanks oi: the blades and holds the same in their open and closed positions.

I claim:

A plural-bladed pocket-knife having a handle-frame, a plurality of knife-blade mounted therein, and split-and-sprung con Ill ing witnesses.
