Description

.l. J. GRUENFELD, JR! CHRISTMAS TREE ORNAMENT. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 7, 1917.
Patentefi Aug m 192%.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JULIU J. GRUENFELD, JR, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR TO ASSOCIATED ENGINEERS COMPANY, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, JULIUS J. GRUEN- FELI), Jr., a. citizen of the United States, re-
siding at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Christmas- Tree Ornaments, of which the following is a full, clear, concise, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of thisspecification.
My invention relates to Christmas tree ornaments and has for its object the provision of ornaments to be used for the purpose specified and which are to be illuminated.
In the preferred form which my invention may take I provide suitable ornament supporting means which cooperate with incandescent lamp sockets, there being preferably a plurality of lamp sockets on one circuit. My invention also concerns itself particularly with the constructional features of the ornament supporting devices which are associated with the socket.
i will describe my invention more in detail by referring to the accompanying: drawin}g illustrating one embodiment thereof in w 11c]- Fignre 1 shows a series of mounting devices together with their sockets as arranged in one circuit, certain portions being broken away to more clearly reveal features of construction;
Fig. 2 is holder, and
Fig. 3 is a sectional view on line 3-3 of Fig. 2, the lamps, socket and fragmentary portion of the ornament being shown.
. eferring more particularly to Fig. 1, I show a connecting plug 10 having the two conductors 11 and 12 which serially include a plurality of sockets 13. Upon each of the sockets is mounted an ornament carrier 14, which ornament carrier then carries a removable ornament Which may be for ina top view of the ornament stance. of the outline shown in Fig. 1 or Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed November 7,
Patented Aug. 10, 1920. 1917. Serial No. 200,667.
socket 13 and illuminates the ornaments, these ornaments being preferably made of translucent or otherwise semi-transparent material In this manner the entire figure presents a luminous aspect. carrier 14: as stated is suitably mounted on the sockets by means of the screw threaded section 19 of insulating plate 23. The ornament carrier has a central opening 20 in the plate 28 through which the lamp base projects when it is screwed into the socket. Further holes 21 are provided preferably circumferentially arranged to permit the air to circulate inwardly.
The ornament carrier is preferably made of an annular nature consisting of the annular metal ring 22, as shown more clearly in Fig. 3, which supports the insulating plate 23 having the holes 20 and 21. The metallic ring 22 also has a central opening 24 through which the lamp projects. The metallic annular ring 22 serves as a base for supporting the ornament, as is more readily apparent from Figs. 1 and'3. As used, the various ornament carriers are provided with suitable fingers and the sockcts are then mounted in any desired way upon the tree.
The effect of this is to avoid the mechanical impression obtained from the mere use of incandescent lamps for illuminating the Christmas tree. The light effects are by reason of my invention obtained through The ornament the luminous character of the ornaments used.
By reason of the construction and arrangement as shown dangers of conflagration are avoided as suitable air circulation is provided so that there can be no danger of over heating.
Inthe also of those ornaments which are provided with a large radiating surface the upper openings in the ornament need not be present as the holes in the ornament carrier provide heated air to prevent over heating.
It will be obvious that with the construction herein disclosed the burning out of the lamp does not necessitate the entire discarding of the ornament, but merely calls for a lamp replacement. Likewise, the destruction of the ornament does not cause an entire loss of the device as merely a new ornament need be added. The expense of sufficient escape for the maintenance is thus greatly reduced and the usefulness of this style of ornamentation greatly increased:
From What has been thus described the nature of my invention will be readily clear to those skilled in the art, and what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. A device of the character described comprising an electric lamp socket, a lamp therefor having a screw threaded plug adapted to fit said socket, and an ornament carrier having an ornament supporting ring and an insulating plate contained within said ring, said plate having a screw threaded opening adapted to be engaged by said plug to thereby support said carrier on the lamp.
2. A device of the character described comprising an electric lamp socket, a lamp therefor having a screw threaded plug adapted to fit said socket, an ornament carrier mounted on said plug and removable bodily therewith and an ornament removably supported by said carrier, said ornament completely inclosing the lamp and having means to permit the escape of heat from said lamp.
In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name this 31st day of October, A. I).
