THOMAS E. BRENAN, O NFR-TJ RLEANS, LOUISIANA.
conmiorons WALLET.
Specification of Letters Iratent. Patented Nov. 16, 1920.
Application led May 3, 1920. Serial No. 378,489.
State of Louisiana, have invented certain new and useful mprovements in Collectors Vallets, of which the following is a'specication.
This invention relates to collectors portmanteaus and has for anobject to provide a cover adapted to be employed upon a collectors book which said bool; is provided with the ordinary covers and loose back, the
portmanteau providing pockets for the receipt of the covers and with a tie member adapted to be inserted through the loose back and secured with the free end employed as a book-mark.
A further obj ect of the invention is to provide a port-manteau havingpcarrier rings to one of which is secured a tie member adapted to be inserted through the loose back of a book and tied to the vopposite ring leaving a free end of the tie for further use as for instance to be used as a book-mark.
W ith these and other objects in view the invention comprises certain novel units, constructions, arrangements, and combinations as will be hereinafter more fully described and claimed.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, which are made a part hereof and on which similar reference characters indicate similar parts, f
Figure 1 is a view of the improved portmanteau inclosing a book, with the tie member shown employed as aboolr-mark, such view being in perspective and shown in conjunction'with a. carrier strap, engaging the carrier r1ngs,.
Fig. 2 a view of the portmanteau in side elevation, part being broken away to show the utility bill pocket,
Fig. 3 a view in side elevation taken opposite to Fig. 2 showing one of the coin pockets with the flap broken away,
Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional view showing the manner of attaching and employing the tie member, and
Fig. 5 a perspective view of the portmanteau open, showing the pockets for receiving the covers of the book and further papers and documents.
The improved portmanteau which forms the subject matter of this application comprises a single strip of material, as for instance leather., designated at 10 extending throughout the length of the portmanteau and folded at 11. To the strip 10, pocket members 12 are secured in any approved manner as by the stitching 13 and adapted to receive and retain the covers 14 of the boolr, indicated as an entirety at 15.
The strip 10 also has secured thereto, at the fold 117 a strap 16 having its ends turned in and secured as at 17, engaging the carrier rings 18. Likewise secured therewith is a tie member 19 fastened in any suitable manner with the strap 16 to the strip 10, preferably by the stitching 20 as shown.
The tie member 10 is of such material and length as to pass through the loose back 21 of the book andV engage the opposite carrier ring 18. rlhe engagement of the tie member 19 with the opposite carrier ring may be in any approved manner but preferably by an ordinary cinch tie indicated at 22. The
securing of thetie member to the ring 18 as at 22 leaves a free engl 23 which isvemployed as a book-mark as indicated( A tiemember lof the construction and quality ordinarily known as a flat shoe lace is found desirable in which case a tip 24: terminates the section 23.
rEhe carrier rings 18 are employed for the purpose of engagement with a carrier strap 25 which may be of any usual and ordinary material, construction and length andvprovided with any usual and ordinary adjusting means, as the buckle 26.
Upon one side of the exterior of the strip 10V a bill pocket 27 is provided having a flap 28 secured in any approved manner as by the fastening members 29 of the type ordinarily referred to as glove fasteners. Upon the'same side of the strip 10 and applied upon the material of the Hap is a pencil loop 30.
Upon the opposite end of the strip 10 and alsov upon the exterior of the portmanteau a plurality of coin pockets 31 are providedV having flaps 32 secured by fastener members 33 similar to the fasteners 2 9. Secured to theopposite ends of the strip 10 are fastener tabs 34 and 35 having fasteners 8Gv corresponding to the fasteners 29 and 33.
'In use the device will be transported bythe user by slinging the strap 25 over the shoulder in the usual ,and ordinary manner of carrying portmanteaus. The bill pocket and thefcoin pockets will be available from the exterior of the portmanteau without readily available,v or access may be had to the pockets l2. The end 23 ,being employed as a book-mark reference to the next page of the book to be referred to is almost instantly'had, saving time and embarrassmentof the user in searching for the page containing the matter relative to Which an entry is to be made. The pencil inthe loop 30 is at all times available vfor the making. of such entry or for filling out or `completing documents extracted from the pockets 12.
Having thusfully described my said invention WhatI claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
l. A portmanteau comprising, a strip Vof covering vmaterial folded intermediate its ends, carrier rings secured upon opposite edges at the folded book-cover-receiving pockets secured to the inner surfaces ofthe covering material and extending therefrom and a tie member secured at one end to the under side of the material at the fold and to one of the carrier rings and adapted to enrings secured to the opposite edges of the strip and" extending therefrom at the fold i under edge of the fold .and provided With'V loops at the extremities of the fold, rings passing through the loops 'and being held thereby in a position allowing them to Vtend beyond Athe fold, a tie member having an end secured to 'one of the rings and along Y the f old and having a free ,end adapted to pass through the loose back of a contained book and be secured tothe other ring.
4. A Aportmanteaucomprising a strip of material'folded at vthe middle7 a strap secured along the under edge of the fold andV provided With loops at the extremities of the fold, rings passing through the loops and adapted to be held thereby in an extending position, a tie memberhaving an end secured to one of the rings and along Vthe fold and having a free end adapted to engage a contained book andbe secured to the other ring Vwhereby the said book is removably held'vvithin the portmanteau'.
In Witness whereof, yI have hereunto set my hand andseal at NeuT Orleans, Louisi ana, this-29th day of April, A.y D. nineteen 'hundred and twenty.
