Description

reference is to CHARLES W. EMERY, OF PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA.
BLOWER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 4, 1921.
Application filed April 6, 1920. Serial no. 371,588.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that 1, CHARLES W. EMERY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Blowers, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to particularly to fan blowers and has for an object to provide a blower for use in creating a blast of air, the blower being particularly adapted for blowing dust, dirt or other undesirable accumulations from machinery such as electric motors and the like.
To the desired end, use is made of a body provided with a chamber having means for creating the desired blast of air, together with a nozzle extended from the chamber to convey the air to the point of disposition or exhaust, the body being provided with a handle so disposed that the entire device will be well balanced when grasped by the handle, thus greatly facilitating its manipulation.
In the further disclosure of the invention, be had to the accompanying drawings, constituting a part of this specification, in which similar characters of ref erence denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1- is an elevation of the device.
Fig. 2- is a plan view.
Fig. 3 is a fragmentary horizontal sectional viewtaken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 1- is a vertical transverse sectional view taken substantially on the line H in Fig. 1, and
Fig. 5- is a fragmentaryelevation of a articular type of nozzle piece.
Referring more particularly to the views the blower in its entirety is indicated by the numeral 10 and comprises a body 11 of a somewhat circular configuration and having an'otf-set nozzle 12. The body 11 provides a chamber 13, one opening 14 thereto, being bordered by an upstanding circular flange 15 forming a seat for a motor 16 and the casing 17 thereof, the motorcasmg being suitably screwed or otherwise secure to the body 11. The opposite face of the body has an opening 18 bordered by a circular flange 19, and over this opening is dlsosed a screen 20, secured in place by a ring 21, suitably screwed or otherwise secured to the body so that blowers and more i the screen will be inter-- posed between the flange l9 and the ring.
21. The motor may be of any suitable type and provides a fan 22 which when the motor 1s attached to the body, will extend into the chamber 13; The nozzle 12 where it is formed with the chamber, has a mouth 23 of considerable size, gradually'tapering to a small outlet end 2% and at which point a nozzle piece is attached. This nozzle piece may consist of a flexible hose 26 or may be of a stiff material such ashardencd rubber providing a nozzle piece 27 having an attaching end 28 for the nozzle 12 with the other end of the nozzle piece elongated as at 29. l
The body 11 has a handle 30 which is preferably formed as an integral part of the body and this handle it will be seen by carel'ul reference to the views, is offset from the longitudinal plane ofthe body 11 by-reason of the off-setting portions 31, so that the handle proper 32 although extending parallel to the longitudinal plane of the body 11,
projects rearwardly from 3 the body as shown. This form of handle construction is a particularly novel feature of my device, in that by off-setting the handle as shown, the weight of the motor will tend to be distributed so as to balance the entire structure in the handling thereof, whereas if the handle extended merely rearward from the body, the excessive weight of the motor to one side of the handle and body would tend to tilt the entire device, preventing easy manipulatioii thereof.
It will of eourse be understood that when the motor is actuated the fan 22 will be subjected to a v ry rapid rotation, thus causing a suction o air through the opening 18 into the chamber 13 which air will be impelled by the rapidly rotating fan to be projected through the nozzle 12 and nozzle piece so that when the nozzle piece is brought into close contact with a dusty or dirty part of a piece of machinery the accumulations T a will be rapidly removed from the machinery, as for instance in the case of a commutator on a motor, and in whiclrihstance the accumulation of dirt or dust ordinarily greatly impairs the operation of the motor.- with my device the blast of air will be sufiicient to remove such accumulations and machiir cry of this character can be easily kept free from carbon or other dust.
It will be apparent that I prefer to use any desired form of motor with my form of device and the particularly-novel feature Q a i 1,864,860 a is the construction and arrangementof parts Having described myinvention, I claimforming the body 11, including the forma- A blower comprising around body por tion of chamber or nozzle and the disposi tion having opposed openingsand a nozzle, tion of the handle for the manipulation of leading from the body and terminating ina 5 the article. a It will of course be understood that the ings having an inwardly flanged edge, a remotor 16 operated by a suitable electric ticulated plate coveringv this opening, means 'jfcurrentwhich can be conveyed to the motor for removably securing the" plate to the bythe cable 16, havinga plug 16* for eonbody, the opposite sideof the body having 10 nection with those parts of the machinery a motor attached thereto, the shaft of which 930 of the motor which will insure rotation of entering: the opening therein, blades on said the fan when thecurrent is supplied to the shaft having their edges notched to receive motor. therein the referred to inturned flange, and
