Description

UNITED S ATEs PATENT OFFICE.
osoAE J. VALENTINE, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN BOX-SLIDES FOR ORNAMENTAL CHAlNS Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 136,946, dated Manh 18, 1873.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, OsoAE J. VALENTINE, of Newark, Essex county, and State of New Jersey, have invented a new and Improved Box-Slide for Chains, Bracelets, &c., of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of skeleton boxes or frames for the slides of bracelets, chains, &c., with the binding springs for holding them arranged to act on the edges of the chains instead of the sides, as heretofore, whereby I obtain boxes or slides which conceal the springs and hold them as securely as the others, but which contain much less metal, so that they cost less, and yet they are capable ofbeing made equally a,s if not more ornamental than, the close boxes or slides.
Figure l is a top or plan View of a section of a Wide chain of which bracelets are made, with a slide and springs arranged according to my invention. Fig. 2 is a side elevation. Fig. 3 is a horizontal section taken on the line as m, Fig. 2. Fig. 4 is a plan of a section of a guard-chain, with a slide and springs of my invention adapted to it 5 and Fig. 5 is a crosssection'on the line 3 51 of Fig. 4..
The slide is composed of longitudinalgrooved pieces A, for the edges of the chain to run in, and cross-pieces B (l; and the springs D are arranged in the grooves of the side pieces, to bear against the edges of the chain, and bind with sufficient friction to hold the slides whereon they are placed along the chain, but not so as to prevent the sliding of them along when it is desired to do so.
For double chains, as guard and other chains, the slides are doubled by the arrangement of a double-grooved longitudinal piece,
A; and in this case I prefer to arrange the springs D in the groove of the middle piece, but it is not material. The springs consist of short pieces of watohsprin g, bowed or curved, and arranged so that the ends bear against the grooved side pieces, While the curved sides bear against the chains.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- In combination with a watch-chain, necklace, or bracelet, the box-slide having the longitudinal-grooved pieces A, cross-bars B, and binding-springs D, arranged to bear edgewise upon the chain, substantially as described.
()SOAB J. VALENTINE.
