UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN M. HOTHERSALI, OF BROOKLYN, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO AJMIEIREAN CAN COMPANY, 0F NEW YORK, .N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BOX.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led July 31, 1915. Serial No. 42,898.
To all who/m. t mary concer/a:
Be it known that I, JOHN M. HorHnRsAm., a citizen of the United States, residing in Brooklyn, in the county of Kings and State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Boxes, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates in general to boxes and has more particular reference to sheet metal boxes provided with a slip or telescoping cover.
A principal object of the invention 1s the provision of a slip cover box, the body .of which may have only a slight necking-ln, without danger of the fiange or flanges of the cover being forced past the shoulder rovided in necking-in the cover into bin 'ng contact.
A further object of the invention is the rovision of a box having a slip cover. of Idepth greater than the intended telescoplng engagement between it and the box body, and this without providing a bead or pronounced projection about the body near its open end to limit the movement of the cover into closed position.
A still further objec of the invention is the provision of a bo having a slip cover, the Han-ge of which will lie substantially 1n the plane of the main part of the body. of the box, and this without danger of binding between the body and cover.
Other objects and advantages of the 1nvention will be apparent as it is better understood from the following description when considered in connection with the accompanying drawing illustrating a preferred embodiment thereof.
Referring to the drawing.
Figure l is a perspective view of a box embodying my invention;
Fig. 2 is a similar view of the cover removed; and
Fig. 3 is a partial section'on the broken line 3 of Fig. l.'l
' For the purpose of illustrating my invention I have shown it embodied in a box body 4 over an open end of which fits a sllp cover 5. In the present instancethe box body 4 is of rectangular cross-sectlon and may be of any usual or preferred constructlon. The
. upper end of this body, which is the open end, is necked-in at 6 only slightl and preferably a distance equal to the t ickness of the metal forming the cover. The cover 5 with the upper edge 10 of the body when the cover has been slipped to fully closed position. `The depressions 9 form inwardly extending shoulders 11 which, with the slight shoulder l2 formed by necking-in the body, prevent too great closing movement of the A cover through engagement resplectively with the edge l() of the body and' t e edge 13 of the flange on the cover. In. order to bring the outer faces of the body and the cover ange flush with each other the neckin -in must be very slight, only equal to the thickness of the metal, and this would allow the cover flange to wedge almost irremovably on the shoulder of the neck; but this wedging is prevented by the depressions It will be manifest that this arrangement disposes the outer surfaces of the main part of the body and the corresponding outer surfaces of the parts of the fia-nge 7 in substantially common unbroken planes, without the necessity of the provision of any outwardly extending shoulders from the body for limiting the cover movement. This permits a label to fit over the body and onto the flange of the cover and yet present a continuous smooth surface on each face of the body.
It is thought that the invention and many of its attendant advantages will be under- 'stood from the foregoing without further description, andv it will be obvious that various changes may be made, as for example, the invention may well be incorporated in boxes of varying form and construction without departing from the spirit and scope of the invention or sacrificing any of its material advantages, the form hereinbefore described being merely a preferred embodiment thereof.
I claim:
1. A box comprising a rectangular body formed with rounded corners, and a similarly shaped and rounded flanged slip cover, the body being necked-in for a slight distance substantially equal to the thickness of the cover flange,l the cover fiangehaving short inward depressions in its rounded corners, where the Hange is of maximum stiffness,
for abutting against the top edge of the body Walls at the corners only.
2. A box comprising a rectangular body and a anged slip Cover, the body being necked-in for a slight distance equal to the thickness of the metal of the cover iange, and the cover iange being formed at its corners With depressions 9 forming abrupt non-Wedging stop shoulders each of which engages on two sides of the body and prevents the corners of the flange from Wedging on the slight shoulder of said necked-in part and maintains the cover ange from distortion.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set 15 my hand in the presence of tWo subscribing Witnesses.
JOHN M. HOTHERSALL.
