Description

C. S. BANKS.
PILLOW 0R LIKE OBJECT.
APPLICATION HLED NOW-7.1919.
1,385,355. Patented July 26, 1921.
w, I By M 4 TTORNEYS UNITED STATES CHARLES S. BANKS, OF MANILA, PHILIPPINE ISLANDS.
PILLOW 0R LIKE OBJECT.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented J uly 26, 1921.
Application filed November 7, 1919. Serial No. 336,861.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES S. BANKS, a. citizen of the United States of America, residing at Manila, Philippine Islands, have invented a new and distinct type of Pillow or like Object, containing improvements over the usual form of this article and of which d the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying draweral and one (1) median, the former or lat eral parts or members to be more or less non-compressible and approximately as thick as the lateral distance from the side of the human head to the outside of the human shoulder; the latter or median part or member to be more or less soft and yielding, of a thickness 'comfortable to the head of the user when reclining upon his back, and of a width about equal to that of the human bead;
(b) The pro'vidin of a pillow. or the like consisting of the t ree parts or members mentioned in paragraph (a) above, these parts or members either permanently united or formed by sewed partitions in a common type of pillow or the like or by three (3) separate arts or members sewed, buttoned, buckl ,clasped, eyeleted, snapped, laced or otherwise fastened together to form a singlearticle when in use or ready for use and no part or parts of which is or are to be used separately.
(0) The providing of a pillow or the like consisting of three Kgnarts or members.
described in ara he a) and (b) above, either formed as fi ibe in paragraph (b) above or by the'application in any manner whatsoever of an device of metal, wood, cloth, rubber, 01 ot or substance, as for example: a wire or system of wires bent, twisted or otherwise shaped or formed so as to slip over an ordinary pillow or the like and by dividing it into three parts as described in paragraph (a) above to cause it to assume the form and gunctilons asillescribed in said para '11 or sew ere in t is specification and id illustrated in the fi ures of the -accom'panying drawings, as we as the lines illustrating the shape devising, forming, making, applying or utilizing of any such auxiliary device of wire, metal, wood, cloth, rubber or other similar substance in dividing a common pillow as described and for the purposes assigned in paragraph (a) above or to be hereinafter escribed in greater detail.
The object of the invention is to provide a pillow or the like by the use of which human adults and children may have a clinical (in the sense of an ordinary bed or similar device) accessor which is not only hygienic and orthope ie (in the sense of aidmg the proper growth of the skeleton of young and adults) in any of the three (3) usual horizontal positions in which the body ma be laced when using the above-described pillow or the like, but also one by means of which the user may enjoy the maximum amount of physical and mental comfort, whether reposing upon the dorsum or upon the right or left side while using this plllOW.
With the above and other similar objects in view, the invention consists in' the features of novelty hereinafter described and. claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which-- 'igure 1 is a top plan view of my improved pillow.
Fig. 2 is an end view thereof, the dotted of the pillow before dividing the same into sections.
F i 3 is an end view of a modified form of. pi low the dotted lines indicatin the position of the parts when the centra portion is depressed by the weight of a head on the pillow.
Figs. 4 and 5 are pers active views of the pillows illustrated in igs. 2 and 1 respectively.
. Fig. 6 is aperspective view of the pillow illustrated in Fig. 5, illustrating one manner of using the same.
Fig. 7 is a perspective view of the pillow shown in- Fig. 5 illustrating another way of "using the same.
My new pillow or the like consists of three (3) parts or members, the parts or members to be manufactured either of cloth, ticking, rubber, rattan, matting, wirecloth, or other similar substance, as separate units and thereafter united by means of buttons, buckles, clasps, eyelets, snaps, laces or other similar devices when ready for use, or to consist of a single piece when three (3) compartments b sewing,
7 members, v shall be as described in made of. any of the above enumerated sub-- stances, as cloth, etc., and divided into lacing, or other similarmethod, t e compartments to be filled with the ordinary substances used for this purpose in the manufacture of pillows or the like, and in the case of. one of my new pillows made of rubber orlike substance, it is to be so constructed that by a single inflation through a single opening, the whole pillow or the like may assume the form indicated in the several figures of the drawing and described for a cloth pillow made in the manner set forth in paragraph (a) above, namely as follows: two lateral members having a thickness equal to the parallel with the axis of the body and tangent to theside of the head, to a similar line parallel to the first line and tangent to the outside of the shoulder or arm when the latter is parallel with the body, and one median ormiddle member united to each of the lateral members as described and having a thickness such that the head will always be maintained with its axis in line with the axis of theln'eck and body, this result to be produced by having the said middle portion always constructed so that it will fit snugly at the base of the skull making it convenient for comfort when the back of the head is applied, to it in use, and a width e ual to or slightly less than the average wi th of the 'human head, exclusive of the ears.
My new invention consists of any device or devices of cloth or other fabric, wood, metal, or similar substance, which when applied to an ordinary pillow or the like, in any form or by any means, has for its or their object the dividing of said pillow or the like into three compartments, parts or the two (2) lateral ones of which paragraph (a) above and the middle one (1) of which shall be united with the lateral ones to form a pillow or the like as described above and in paragraph (a).
The whole object of the pillow or the like, hereinbefore described, is that of maintaining the human head and its adjacent members in a natural position when reposing upon said pillow or the like, in whatsoever usual position the head may assume when so reposing and with the ultimate object of provlding for comfort and producing correct skeletal growth and of obviating the common defects known as: stoopshoulder, humpback, roundshoulder and other similar one caused by the use of a pillow or the like, which when high enough for comfort when the user is reposing upon his side, is too high for comfort or correct bodily growth when the user is reposing upon his average distance from a longitudinal line 'b ack.
The following points of originality and novelty are claimed for this pillow or the like, namely:
1. As a new article of manufacture, a pillow comprising three sections, the two end sections being identical and including relatively thick portions filled with non-compressible material, and a relatively thin central section located between and connected to the end sections and filled with soft yielding material.
2. As a new article of manufacture, a pillow comprising three connected sections the two end sections being relativel wide, thick, and non-com ressible, said en sections being of a thic ess to support the head of a user in normal alinement with his body when the user lies on his side, and the central section being relatively thin and narrow and yielding and ada ted to comfortably support the head of t e user when the user lies on his back.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
CHARLES S. BANKS.
