RECEITACLE FOR BACTERIAL CULTURES.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MATHEW J. HOLLO- wool), avcitizen of the'United States, and resident of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Receptacles for Bacterial Cultures, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to receptacles for transporting bacterial cultures and more particularly to the type in which an air tube is provided depending into the receptacle and having filtering means arranged therein, an object of this invention being to so form the inner end of the air tube that moisture will be prevented from rising in the tube to the filtering medium through capillary attraction, while at the same time the culture media will be prevented from entering the tube during transportation.
To this and other ends, the invention consists of certain parts and combinations of parts, all of which will be hereinafter described, the novel features being pointed out in the appended claims.

Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates the bottle or receptacle and 2 the media in which the culture is contained, this media in this, instance being moist jelly like substance. The receptacle or bottle is provided in this instance with a stopper 3 which carries the air tube 5 in which a suitable number of filtering devices 6 preferably in the form of pieces of absorbent cotton are arranged.

of the air tube so that not only is moisture held away from the air filtering devices, but at the same time the culture media is prevented from entering'the air tube when. the receptacle is inverted or agitated. This result in this instance is secured by heating the tube at one end and forcingsuch heated end inwardly to provide an internally projecting portion 7 which has a reduced opening therethrough tapering inwardly toward the inner end 8 of said opening. By this arrangement any moisture which condenses on the tube will be conducted toward the lower or'free end of the latter and will form in drops falling into the culture media without being carried up the air tube to the filtering devices ,6 by capillary attraction. Furthermore the opening is of such a small diameter that it is impossible for the culture media to enter the air tube and stop the latter when the receptacle is inverted or agitated during transportation.
What I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. An air supply tube for receptacles for transporting bacterial cultures having its free end turned inwardly to provide a reduced opening. 7
2. An air supply tube for receptacles for transporting bacterial cultures having its free end turned inwardly and tapering inwardly to provide a reduced opening.
3. In combination with a receptacle, a bacterial culture media contained therein, a stopper for the receptacle, and an air tube Carried by the stopper and depending into the receptacle, said air tube being of substantially uniform diameter throughout its length with its free end flaring slightly outwardly and having an inwardly turned portion tapering upwardly in the outwardly flaring portion and in spaced relation to the inner walls of the outwardly flaring portion, the inner end of the upwardly turned.
