Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. 8, 1921.
Annh'cation filed May 8, 1920. Serial No. 379,751
To aZZ coll-02a e't' may Be it known concern that I, lVILLiAM Knarwi, a citizen of the United States, residing at F all River, in the county of Bristol and State of h ilassachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Mufflers, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements inmufllers, and pertains to mufllers for use in connection with internal combustion engines. e
The primary object of the invention is to provide a multler which is composed of but two castings suitably connected so as to be capable or" easy and quick assemblage and disconnection thereby to allow of cleaning, and to further provide a mufiler which is effective in operation and highly efficient for the purpose.
' Further, the invention aims to provide a mufiler in which the exhaust gases are caused to travel in a spiral path prior to egrcssin Still further and other objects will be later set forth and manifested in the course of the following description.
In the drawings:
Figure l, is a side elevation of the invention;
Fig. 2 is a section on line 22 of Fig. 1;
Fig. 3, is a top plan view of the interior of one half of the device and Fig. 4, is a bottom plan view of the interior of the other hal n proceeding in accordance with the present invention, two castings are employed one of which 1, of tubular form providing either an inlet or an outlet as desired, which connection extends outwardly from the the casting 1, and communicates with the center of the interior of the casting. The preferably circular marginal a peripheral connection 4, extending outwardly from the wall 3. On its interior, the casting is formed with a spiral wall or partition 5, forming a spiral passage for the exhaust gases, the wall 5, terminating at one end at one side tion 4, and at its opposite end in partial surrounding relation to the connection 2, as indicated at 6, in Figs. 2 and 4. The upper edges of the wall 3 and the spiral wall 5, are convex in form as depicted in Fig. 2 at 7 for the purpose of nesting in havin an L-connection 2 b 7 of connecthe concave free edges 8, of the spiral wall 9, and marginal wall 10, or" the complementary casting 11. he casting 11, is a duplicate ofthe casting l, excepting as to the connection 2, which latter is omitted in the casting-ll. he casting 11 further has a connection 12, which is complementary to the connection 4, of
the other casting l, the two connections mating toform a completely tubular inlet or outlet as desired and as depictedin Fig. 2, of the drawings.
The two castings are held together by means of bolts 13, having nuts 14, which bolts pass through suitable openings formed for tl i the two castings. The castings further each have a base portion 15, which latter conjointly form a base for supporting the entire device in position.
In operation, the exhaust gases from the engine may be admitted to the muiller either at the center thereof by conducting the gases to connection 2, or tl mitted to the conducting formed by the parts instance, the gases are caused to pursue a spiral path of travel from the point of ingress to the point of egress, whereby the gases are effectually muflled or silenced.
It will further be seen that by removing the nuts 14 the two castings may be separated and cleaned and then easily reassembled.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 2* 1. In a mufiler, a pair of castings, each having a flat wall and a substantially circular'marginal wall, a spiral wall in each casting connected to the flat wall thereof, a connection extending from the flat wall of one casting and communicating with the center of the interior of the casting, complementary connections leading peripherally of the marginal walls of the castings and connecting to the outer end of the spiral passage, the spiral walls having concave and convex edges nested one within the other, fastening bolts passed through the two castings to secure same together, and complementary base portions extending peripherally from the castings, said spiral walls being each continuous and at one end leading form one side of the peripheral coning means for securing the castings together Y spiral Walls engaging means between nections, and at the opposite end terminating in partial surrounding relation to the center connections.
2. In a mufiler, a pair of castings having central inlet and peripheral outlet connections, each casting having a spiral Wal forming a spiral passage, said Walls having abutting and nesting concave and convex edges, and fastening means passed through the castings for securing game together said being each continuous and at one end leading from one side of the peripheral connectlons and at the opposite end terminating in partial surrounding relation to the center connections. I
' 3. Ina mufiler, two castings each having a piral wall forming a spiral passage,inter the adjacent edges of the adjacent Walls, a central inlet and a peripheral outlet connected to the respective ends of the spiral passage, and fastensaid spiraltwalls being each continuous and at one end leading from one side of the peripheral connections and at the opposite end terminating in partial surroundingrelation to the center connections. 7 I. In a mufller, a pair of castings each having a spiral Wallr'orm sage, said Walls being in ing a spiral pas- V abutting engagement at their free edges,
fastening means to hold the sections together, and a central inlet-and a peripheral outlet connection ex:
tending from the respective ends of the spiral passage, said spiral walls being each continuous and at one end leading from one side of the peripheral connections and at the opposite end terminating in partial surrounding relation tothe center connections.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
