JOHN' A. ROUGH AND THOMAS E. HASTIE, OF TULSA., OKLAHOMA.
DOOR-SECURING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application led August 28, 1920. Serial No. 406,622.
To all whom t mag/concern.'
Be it known that we, JOHN A. RoUoH and THOMAS H. HAs'rm, citizens of the United States, residing'at Tulsa, in the county of Tulsa and State of Oklahoma, have invented new and useful Improvements in Door-Securing Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to door locks and has for its object the provision of a securing device which is insertable between the edge of a door and its jamb in penetrating engagement with the jamb and which carries a pivoted arm having a latch head engageable within an opening in the main body of the device, this arm engaging against the face of the 'door and preventing opening thereof, the device consequently being bur-` glar proof and positively preventing en'- trance until released.
An important object is the provision of a device of this character which will be very simple and inexpensive in manufacture, easy to apply, eiiicient in service, durable and a general improvement in the art.
With the above and other objects and advantages in view, the invention consists in the details of construction to be herein after more fully described and claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawingsvin Figure 1 is aside elevation of the device in extended position, and
Figure 2 ,is a detail cross sectional view through a portion of a door and its jamb and showing the device in position.
Fig. 3 is a detail view of the locking head extension. Y
Referring more particularly to the drawings, kthe letter A designates a door and B designates its jamb. In carrying out our invention we provide a device which includes an elongated plate 10 which has one end laterally extended and sharpened to an edge, as indicated atV 11. -At its other end this plate terminates in knuckles 12. The numeral 13 designates a hinged frame which is formed at one end with a knuckle 14 disposed between the knuckles 12 and very loosely pivotally connected therewith by a. bolt or rivet notch 1 tures.
15. The reason that this pivotal connection must be less is that there and having notches 17 at the sides thereof.
The plate 10 is provided with an opening 18 adapted to receive the extension 16.
The o eration of the device is as follows: The oor A being open, the operator grasps the plate 10 and Vplaces it against the Jamb B so that it will be engaged by the doork when the latter is shut. When the door is closed its engagement with the plate 10 will cause the tine 11 to penetrate the jamb which willhold the plate 10 irmly.
The operator then swings the arm 13 upon- 1vot 19 so as to bring the extension 16 its witiiin the opening 18 and owing to the lateral pla provided in the arm 13 the lower will engage over the edge of the opening 18 so as to prevent the arm 13 from swinging away-from the plate 10. When lthe parts are in this position it will be seen that the arm 13 will engage against the face of the door and consequently positively pre.-
vent opening thereof until the arm' 13 1s disengaged and swung away from the door.
Having thus described our invention, we claim Y A door securing device comprising an elongated plate formed at one end with alaterally extending tine, said plate being adapted for insertion between the free edge of a door and its jamb with said tine in penetrating engagement with the jamb, said plate being formed intermediate its ends with an opening, and a locking member of hook shape pivoted upon the free end of said plate and having its free end formed with a reduced extension adapted for insertion through said opening, said reduced extension including a relatively 'large head and a constrictedneck portion defining notches enga eable with the edges of the opening wheregby to prevent casual displacement of said hook member with respect to the plate member.
In testimony whereof we aix our signa- JoHN AQROUCH. THOMAS H. lHASTIE.
