UNITED STATFEfiQ is; can a ALIBERT G, GIRAB'D, OF WORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF T0 7 FAYETTE A. AMIDON, OF \VORCESTER, MASSACHUSETTS.
anovnoa Application filed May 17,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALBERT G. Gimme, a citizen of the United Statesof America, and a resident of the city of Worcester, in the county of lVorcester and State of Massachusetts, have invented new and useful Improvements in Furniture, of which the following is a specification.
, This invention relates to improvements in furniture and more particularly to combination table and chairs.
One of the objects of my invention is toprovide an arrangement whereby a number of seats or chairs is adapted'to be foldably connected to a table;
, 'i inothcr object of. my invention is to provide a simple, efficient and inexpensive device of the character described adapted to permit a table and seats to be made from a unitary, structure and so arranged that the seats may readily fold to a position directly under the table. V
A still further objector my invention is to provide-an arrangement designed to allow a seat which forms an accompaniment to a table or desk to be folda-bly disposed out of the way from a position alongside the table to one beneath the table.
Another object of my invention is to provide an arrangement wherein there is adapted to be provided aiseries of seats or chairs mountedupon movable supports, and held in ioldable relation upon these supports in such a manner that all theseatsmay be' folded within orunderthe table top, thus allowing the table and the seats to befreadily moved at thesamc time and in one operation.
A. still further object of my, invention is to provide a device which shall include not only a table but a number of foldable seats as well, it being understood that the seats may be separately folded under the table.
And it is another object ofniy invention to provide in a device as described, in com bination, means whereby the table and seat supports may be readily collapsed and thus made to occupy but very little room.
lVith the above and other objects in view, my invention consists in the arrangement, combination and details of construction disclosed in the drawings and specification, and then 'more particularly'pointed out in the appended claims. V
In the drawings wherein similar reference FURNITURE.
V Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Fel 21 1922 Figure 3 is a fragmental detail View of said invention,
Figure is a bottom plan view of said invention,
F igure 5 is a sectional detail view of a seat and swinging supporting arm,
Figure 6 1s a perspective view of the seat, its support and a table support,
Figure 7 is a front elevation of the collapsed form of myinvention,
Figure 8 is a front elevation 01': the parts shown in Figure 7 but arranged in spread out relation.
Figure 9 is a view of the standards for the table and showing also the interlockable part-s,
Figure 10 is a side view of the collapsed form of my invention,
Figure 11 is a fragmental sectional view of the table top and certain understruct-ure thereof.
Referring to the drawings which are merely illustrative of my invention 1 and Q- designate the opposite sets of standards, while 3 and 4, designate the other similarly arranged set of standards disposed at right angles to those first mentioned. The broad fiat base portions of these standards are designated 5 as indicated in Figure 1. A. pair of upstanding wire arms 6 and 7 have lower curved ends secured into the cross bar 4 which is fixedly and firmly secured upon the upper end of each standard 1, 2, 3, and 4. Each standard is furthermore provided at its lower end with a deep recess or socket 8 in which extends the pin Qupon which is suitably trunnioned the lower end of a curved or segmental arm 10, the pin passing through the opening 10 formed in the lower end of this arm. A pivot 11 extends in the upper end of the se mental arm 10 and upon this pivot is movcbly mounted the lug 12 formed at the bottom side of the seat 13 carrying the back 14. It will be noticed that when the curved arm 10 is forced back as far as it will go it will abut the lower edge of the notch or recess 8 which acts therefore as a suitable stop therefor, With the parts thus arranged the seat 13 is supported firmly in a horizontal position. Ihe distance or space between the upstanding arms 6 and 7 is sufficient to allow the back portion 14 to pass therethrough foldably. All of the seats are supported in this same manner so that it will be seen that by virtue of the pivots 11 the seats 13 are permitted to swing thereupon to a substantially horizontal position as shown in Figure 1, the curved arm having previously been swung upon. its pivot 9, and the position of this arm and seat permits the back portion let to be swung through and between the wire arms 6 and 7 to occupy the position shown in Figure 1.
It is proposed to render the table structure collapsible and for this purpose the upstanding arms 6 and 7 of each standard carry interlockable extensible elements, in the nature of sleeves 17 projecting at right angles from these pair of arms 6 and 7 and rods projecting at right angles from the other pair of upstanding arms and designated 18, it being noticed that the uppermost terminals 1601 these upstanding arms project above the'sleeves and corresponding rods therefor, and provide pins which are adapted to project into the bores 20 formed in the table top 19, any suitable catch (not shown) being adapted to hold the table top down in position uponthese pins 16. It will be seen that a suitable set screw (not shown) may; be adapted to hold the interlocking parts against displacement. lVhen the rods slide in the sleeves the two standards of each pair of supports for the table top will telescope until the parts are as shown in Figure 7, collapsed and ready for shipment.
"It will thus be seen that I haveprovided "a simple and efiicient and inexpensive arrangement that possesses the diserable-qualities that it saves considerable space when on the floor owing to the seats folding under the table, enables the floor sweeper to reach under the t'a-ble'to better advantage in a smaller radius of movement about the table, permits the table and seats being moved at one stroke, allows the parts of the table being collapsed and thus more quickly shipped and will give more comfort to the occupants of the seats whichform an accompaniment to the table. Numerous changesmay be made in practice without departing in principle from the details'herein disclosed What I Patent is desire. to protect by Letters 1. In a deviceas described the combinajecting forwardly from said upstanding arms of one standard, a pair of rightangm larly disposed rods formed upon the upstanding arms of the other standard, said rods adapted to telescope inthe sleeves of the other standard adjustably, and a foldable seat carried by .each standard and adapted tobe positioned between the upstanding arms of each standard.
2. In a device as described, the combination of a pair of standards having upstandin rods, a pair of sleeves projecting from the upper end of'one pair of rods below the upper terminals thereof, a pair of rods projecting below the upper terminals of the other standard, said'projecting rods adapted to enter the sleeves adjustably, a table top having bores into which the free terminals of all of said upstanding rods project whereby said table top holds said standards against separation, and seats carried by said standards. v
3. In a device as described, the combination of a pair of standards having upstanding rods, aswinging arm'h'aving a connection in the lower portion of said standards,
against separation, and seats foldably connected to said standards. a r
In witness whereof he has hereunto, set
his hand and affixed; his seal this 13th day of May, 1920. v
