Be it known that I, ALFRED ALLEN, a sub ject of the King of Great Britain and Ireland, residing at 8 Weston Road, Handsworth, in the city of Birmingham, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pencil and Pen Clips, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has for its object to provide an improved clip for securing a fountain pen, pencil or the like in the pocket.

A well known clip consists of a band adapted to grip the pen or the like and formed with an extension which slips over the outer side of the pocket and grips the same.

According to the present invention a hinged and spring controlled claw is mounted at the outer end of the aforesaid extension for engaging the material of the pocket, and aii'ording the required security.

In the accompanying sheet of explanatory drawings z- Figure 1 is a front elevation, Figure 2 a side elevation, Figure 3 a rear elevation, and Figure 4 a sectional side elevation of a pen or pencil clip constructed in accordance with this invention.

Figures 5 and 6 are side and rear elevations of an alternative construction of claw.

In carrying the invention into effect as shown, a metal band a adapted to grip the cap or barrel of a pen, or the stem of a pencil or the like, is formed with an extension 7) which in use lies parallel with the article as heretofore, and is adapted to slip over the outside of the pocket. At the outer or lower end of the extension a claw c is hinged. The claw is held in the active position as shown in the drawings by a spring (Z. lVhen in use the corners e of the claw bear against the outside of the pocket, and any tendency of the pen to rise out of the pocket is resisted by the action of the claw. In the act of slipping the pen or the like into the pocket, the claw moves without resistance over the outside of the pocket. To withdraw the pen or the like from the pocket the lower end of the claw is depressed so as to move the operative ends out of action, the claw being then in line with the eX- tension 6. v

Preferably the claw is formed from a piece of metal strip or sheet so that it c0mprises a pair of side pieces lying alongside Specification of Letters Patent.

the extension 6 above mentioned, and a transverse piece which serves for manipulating the claw. The claw is pivoted to the ertension by the provision of a pair of small projections f on opposite sides of the extension which enter holes 9 in the sides of the claw. To accommodate a spring, the extension is formed at its lower end with a hole It leaving a narrow portion of metal at the end of the extension around which a small spiral or coiled spring is arranged, the ends of the spring being adapted to bear on the claw and the extension respectively. By means of the spring the claw is held always in the active position shown, and the claw must be moved against the action of the spring before the pen or the like can be withdrawn from the pocket.

In the construction shown in Figures 5 and 6 the part I) is formed with a pair of side lugs 2' provided with pivot holes f. Between the lugs is mounted a claw 0 formed with pivot projections j which engage the holes 7 in the lugs. A coiled spring (Z surrounding one of the projections and a gapped portion of the claw has its ends arranged to bear on the parts 6 and c for moving the latter to its operative position.

Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A pen or pencil clip consisting of an extension secured at one end to a pen or pencil, lateral hinge projections at the free end of the extension, a claw formed with apertures engaged by the said projections, and a coiled spring on, the extension acting on the claw for moving it into operative position, substantially as described.

2. A pen or pencil clip consisting of a band for embracing the pen or pencil, an extension from the band having an aperture near its free end, a claw formed with a pair of side pieces and a transverse piece, pro jections on the extension entering apertures in the side pieces of the claw and forming a hinge connection, and a coiled spring surrounding the portion of the extension adjacent to the aperture therein, the ends of the spring acting on the extension and claw respectively for holding the latter in operative position, substantially as described.
