To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. 'lLmau l". Rl'JISl-ZY. a citizen of the United States. residing at Milwaukee. county of lililwaukee. and State of \Visconsin. have invented a new and use fnl Improvement in Safety Lights. of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in safety road signals.
It is an object of the invention to provide a safety' device which will illuminate a portion of the street surface at night. and which. therefore. is particularly useful at street crossings or turns.
It is also an object of the invention to provide in combination with a visible sig nal. means suitable for protecting the sig nal against the impact of vehicles or the like. without. however. diminishing largely the strength of illumination. the vehicles themselves. however. being not endangered by the presence of the signal device in the street surface. c
It is also an object of the invention to combine with a signal device of this char acter. means adjacent the device itself for actuating the signal or for interrupting the actuation.
With these and other objects in view. an embodiment of the invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawing. and described in the following specification.

A substantially circular casing I having an extension 2 is imbedded in the road sur face. so as to project with its margin only over the level of the road. A circumferential flange 3 projecting from the inner wall of the casing inwardly serves as a support for an inverted glass cup 4. having a marginal flange which resls upon the flange 3 of the casing. The thickness of the wall of the glass may he uni-form in all parts of the same and may he so ciently thin to permit the passage of the light rays through tlic same withoutdecreasing the intensity of the light. of the. casing is covered by an annular packing. and a protector 7 preferably consistiup of a casing and provided with a number of The flange 5 resting on the flange i" radial perforations 8 is mounted on the margm of the casing 1 in spaced relation to the glass. The attachment of the protector 7 to the casing is effected preferably by a number of machine screws 9 which extend through the lower portion of the reflector and through a packing 10 into the top portlon of the casing. The protector 7 also is provided adjacent each of these holding screws with a transverse slot 11 whereby the head of the screws may be suitably turned by means of a wrench or the like. The marginal portion of the protector has an ofi-set annular shoulder. part oftheprotector restng on the packing ti. and the other part being forced into engagement with the casin by means of the screws 9 which pass through the packing 10. Additional openings 12 may be disposed near the crown portion of the protector to emit the light in snbstantiallv vertical direction upwardlv.

The safety device can be manufactured at relatively low cost. can readily be installed. and can he kept clean so not to be influenccd by rain water or the like. ()wing to the arrangement of the relatively heavy protector in spaced relation to the glass. the danger of breaking the glass of the cup 4 is entirely eliminated and the entire space between the top of the cup and the bottom of the casing is available for the insertion of a strong. high-powered incandescent lamp or the like. The provision of a glass cop. the walls of which have uniform thickness. is also prefcrahlc. as compared with the provision of a lens made of relativclv heavy glass. and in which the protection of the device against breakage is attained more owing to the thickness of the glass of the lens than owing to the presence of a relatively heavy protector above the cup.
I claim:
1. In a roadway signal, the combination of a substantially circular base to be imbedded in a roadway, a substantially concavo-convex transparent dome supported upon said casing, a lighting device project ing into the cavity of said dome and a relatively heavy perforated protector of sub stantially the same contour of and embracing said dome, said protector being secured to the casin and engaging the peripheral margin of t e dome for fixedly retaining the same upon said casing.
2. In a device of the character described. the combination of a substantially circular casing imbedded in the-road. a signal device mounted in said casing, a protector projecting above the casing, and me s secured to the casing and imbedded in the road for actuating or stopping the actuation of the signal device.
3. In adevice of the character described. the combination of a substantially circular casing imbedded in the road. the casing having an annular flange, an inverted glass cup having an annular flange secured on said first named flange, a relatively heavy protector provided with symmetrically arranged openings, said protector being secured to the marginal portions of the casing. a signal lamp mounted on the bot-tom of the casing. an electric switch in sairl'bottom. and means for operating said switch.
4. In a device of the character described. the combination of a substantially circular casing having an extension. a circular shoulder on the margin of the casing. a protector having a. number-0f perforations and seated on the shoulder, a packing bein interposed between said shoulder and said protector. head screws for securing said protector to said shoulder, the protector having a number of circumferential slits in which the heads of the screws are secured, a switch in the bottom of the casing. and actuating means for said switch located in the extension of the casing.
5. In a roadway signal, a base having a peripheral flange and imbedded in a road way, a substantially concavo'convex trans= parent dome supported upon said flange. an illuminating means supported upon said base, and extending into said dome a rigid guard of substantially semi-spherical dome shape arranged over and in spaced relation to the dome. and means for lixedlv ecuring said dome and guard on said has 6. In a roadway signal, a base imbedded in a roadway, a transparent concavo convex dome supported by the base and projecting above the roadway, a source of light arranged within the dome. and a substantially semi-spherical concavo-convex guard car ried by said. base and spaced from said dome, said uard being provided with apertures of sul icient size to permit light from thesource to emanate but of insuflicient size to permit a vehicle wheel passing over the guard to reach said dome.

9. In a roadway signal, a base adapted to be imbedded in a roadway, a transparent dome supported on said base above the level of the roadway. a rigid guard for said dome, an QlGCtIlCtlls-iLllllflil'lfilllfig device on said base within the dome n electric switch on said base for controlling said illuminating device. and means on said base and imbedded in the roadway for manipulating said switch.

14. In a roadway signal, a substantially circular base adapted to be imbedded in a roadway and provided with an annular flange and an annular shoulder above said flan a transparent concavo-convex dome havin an annular flange seating upon said base ange, a" relatively heavy protector overlying. said dome and of substantially the same shape and provided with ope said protector seating on said base annu r shoulder and having an annular flange impinging upon the flange on said dome.
