Description

F. GAMBINO. COMBINATION PADLOCK. APPLICATION FILED NOV. 0, 1921.
WITNESS;
INVENTOR I ATTORNEY n a er,
a w n t? it concernarron ,ranriocir.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Aug. 22, 1922.
Application filed November 8, 1921. Serial No. 513,773.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK GAMBINO, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Combination Padlocks, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a padlock, the general object of the invention being to provide a lock of the permutation type, each limb of the shackle being controlled by a series of discs.
Another object of the invention is to form the shackle of two parts, one half being permanently but movably connected with the lock case and the other being detachably connected with the first part.
This invention also consists in certain other features of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, to be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings and specifically pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing my invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompany ng drawings wherein like characters denote l1ke or corresponding parts throughout the several views, and in which I Figure 1 is an elevation of the invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional view with the lock in open position.
Figure 3 is a plan view of my 1nvent1on with the limbs of the shackle broken away.
Figure 4 is a sectional view approximately on the line 4 -4c of Figure 1.
Figure 5 is a detail elevation of a portlon of the shackle member.
In these views 1 indicates the case which is constructed in two sections and secured together by suitable bolts 1. The case 1s provided with the openings 2, through which the discs 3 extend, and the openings 4: for the shackle 5. The discs 3 are provided with reduced parts 6 which engage recesses 7 in the adjacent discs so that said discs are rotatably arranged one on the other. The reduced parts are hollow so as to form spaces between the discs to receive the projections 8 on the limbs of the shackle. Each disc is provided with a key-hole shaped opening being spaced apart a distance which will permit them to enter the spaces between the discs, when the discs are turned and thus lock the two parts of the shackle in closed position. WVhen all the key-hole shaped openings are in alignment the shackle can be withdrawn though I prefer to make the limb 10 of one part of the shackle of greater length than the limb 11 of the other part and to so form the opening 4: for said part 10 that the first projection on said limb cannot pass through the opening so that this part of the shackle will remain in connection with the case at all times. The other opening 4 is of key-hole shape so that the limb 11 can be withdrawn therethrough. The two parts are connected together by the socket 12 in part 10 receiving the projection 13 in part 11 so that when the part 11 is withdrawn from .the case it can be moved laterally to free it from the part 10. As shown the two sets of discs are arranged one at the lower part of the case and the other at the top thereof and at opposite sides.
From the above it will be seen that the discs must first'be moved into a position where all the openings are in alignment with each other, the discs being provided with the usual indicating marks for facilitating the positioning of the discs by a person familiar with the proper combination.
It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
I desire it to be understood that I may make changes in the construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts, provided that such changes fall within the scope of the appended claim.
What I claim is A lock of the class described comprising a casing having a pair of openings therethrough and a corresponding number of transverse bores communicating with said openings, a series of discs disposed in each opening and rotatably arranged one over the other, each disc being provided with a reduced portion on one side and a recess on the opposite side, said reduced portion on the intermediate discs being hollow and adapted to engage the recess of the adjacent disc and provide a space between each disk thereby, said discs being provided with a key hole shaped opening centrally arranged therethrough, a tWo part shackle, a socket limb, a plurality of spaced projections arin one part and a projection in the other for ranged on each limb and adapted to be; reengaging the socket, a pair of limbs deceived in the keyhole shaped opening in 10 pending from said shackle and one limb besaid discs for the purpose specified.
