IMPROVEMENT m ARMPlT-SHlELDS.-

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 142,875, dated September 16, 1873; application filed May 24, 1873.

To all whom it may concern: Be it known that I, JAMES SIBLEY, of New York city, in the countyand State of New York, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Ladies Dress-Shields, of which the following is a specification;

The object of this invention is to provide means for protecting the dresses of ladies from the ruinous effects of perspiration under the arms; and it consists in a shield or protector made of what is known as chamois-skin or equivalent material-and oiled silk or equivalent material in combination.

In the accompanying drawing, Figure 1 shows the shield as applied. Fig. 2 is a section of the shield taken on the line aa: of Fig.

This shield is made in two parts or flaps, of crescent form, as seen in Fig. 3, doubled together, the parts being each of chamois-skin, or similargood absorbing material, and oiled silk. a is the leather. b is the oiled silk. The.

The shield is worn between the arm and body and-the dress, and is preferably attached to the dress. It absorbs the perspiration and protects the dress. The chamois-skin I is a good absorbent, and the oiled silk prevents the moisture fromreachi-n'g the dress. Other material may be used as an absorbent, but I prefer chamoisskin. The lining may also be of any light water-proof material; but oiled silk is preferred.

. I do not confine myself to the particular form shown, but consider it the best for the purpose. Each flap may be made of more than two thicknesses, if' desired, a soft and pliable absorbent and a water-proof lining being the essential feature of the invention.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
