This invention relates to drip pan assembly for oil or other liquid ratus, and among dispensing appa its principal objects are to simplify cheapen and otherwise lmprove upon devices of this character.
In service stations, tablishments where liquid is dispensed from tacle, provision must be unauthorized withdrawal liquid. to said drawings, and first to Figs. 1 to 5, inclusive, which illustrate a s mple embodiment of the present invention, the reference character 5 designates a fragment of a tank or receptacle for containing Oll or other liquid to be dis ensed. As 18 well understood, an oil or liqui pump or delivery apparatus (not shown) is mounted in the tank and serves to draw off the oil or liquid and dischar e it into any suitable receptacle. The defivery or dis charge pipe of such pump or dispensing apparatus is illustrated at 6 and goose neck nozzle 7 terminating in a downwardly projecting tubular spout 8. The parts described are old and common and require no detailed description, so far as this specification is concerned.
Directly below the spout 8, the tank 5 is formed with an opening 9 in which fits a flanged drip pan ring 10 which is fixedly secured to the top of the tank by bolts, rivets or like fastening devices 10. The flange 11 of the ring extends down through the hole in the tank and has an annular inwardly projecting shoulder or ledge 12 formed thereon, on which is removably supported a grid or grate like drip pan structure 13, comprising a. downwardly and centrally sloping bottom plate 14 formed at its marginal edge with an upwardly projecting annular flange 15. Said bottom part has a central opening 16 above which rises a hollow boss 17 and in said opening 16 is secured a fine mesh wire screen 18. Ribs l9 radiate from the hollow boss 17 to the flange 15 and the upper edges of said ribs 19, flange l5, and hollow boss 17 are flush with or approximately flush with the upper face of the ring 10. In the bottom plate 14 between two of the ribs 19 is a small hole 20, through which extends a measuring stick or gauge 21; said stick contains a scale whereby the plate 14. The latter is preferably formed with a raised ridge around the hole 20, upon which the shoulder of the stopper rests.
To the ring 10 is rotatively and removably secured a cover plate 24, which rests on the ring 10 and is locked against movement b means which will be presently described. C onveniently, said pivotal connection between the cover plate and ring may comprise a downwardly projecting hook like lug 25, secured in an ear 26 formed on the edge of the cover plate, said lug pro'ec'ting down through a hole 27 in an ear 28 ormed on the edge of the ring 10. Obviously, the cover plate may be swung about on its pivotal connection'with the ring 10 to uncover the drip pan 13, and may be detached from the ring by swinging the cover plate upward to disen age the hook 25 from hole 27.
he cover ,plate 24 is preferably made with a dome like part 29, at the center of which is an opening 30 surrounded by a threaded flange 31 and threadedly secured in said opening is a drip pipe,32 which projects up therefrom, to within a short distance from the bottom of the discharge spout 8'. Any drippings of oil from the spout fall throu' h the pipe 32 and through the opening 16 an screen 18, andre-enter the tank 10.
To look the cover plate 24 on the ring 10, and to prevent mischievous persons from in; troducing abrasive or other injurious material through the upper open end of the pipe 32 or from drawing ofl' liquid from the tank, even when the cover with its drip pipe is in place on the ring 10, I provide a short pipe 33 at the upper end of the drip pipe which may telescope into said drip pipe and which may be raised above the upper edge of said drip pipe to thereby surround and enclose the discharge spout. As shown, the pipe 33 has an eye stud or apertured lug 34 secured to it, which projects out through a slot 35 in the drip pipe and rests on the lower edge of said slot when the pipe is telescoped into the drip pipe. Said slot 35 is substantially L shaped, comprising a vertical part 36 terminating at its upper end in a slightly upwardly inclined part 37, and adjacent the extreme end of the part 37 of the slot, the drip pipe 32 is provided with an eye stud or apertured lu 38 which co-operates with the eye stud 34 in locking the parts together. Obviously, the pipe 33 may be raised to cover the discharge spout 8 by lifting up on the eye stud 34 and moving it along the part 37 of the slot until it is brought close to the eye stud 38, and the parts may be locked in such position by an ordinary padlock 39.
To insure a secure closure for the discharge spout, an overhanging flange member 40 is provided on the nozzle 7 into which the pipe 33 is introduced. Said flange member 40 may also be employed as a means of connecting the discharge spout 8 with the remainder of the nozzle. As shown, the noz zle is formed with a screw threaded nipple 41 at its discharge end, and the discharge spout is formed with an outwardly projecting flange or bead 42 which bears against the edge of the nipple 41, and the flange member 40 is formed with an internal annular flange 43 that bears against the flange or head 42 of the spout. By screwing up the flanged member 40 on the nipple, the spout is securely fastened in place.
When the parts are locked together, the pipe 33 extends above the drip pipe 32, and surrounds and encloses the discharge spout 8, with its extreme upper end confined in the flanged member 40, In this position, the cover cannot be removed and access to the tank is impossible without breaking any of the parts or unlocking the look. In this position of the parts, any oil pumped out of the tank through the discharge spout will pass directly back to the tank. To uncover the spout, the padlock 39 is unlocked and removed from the apertured lug 34 and eye stud 38, the pipe 33 is telescoped into the drip pipe 32 and the cover 24 swung awayfrom the drip pan 13. A receptacle may then be placed under the spout and oil may be dispensed into it from the tank, as usual. Any drippings issuing from the spout, after the receptacle is removed, will fall through the central openings in the grid and enter the tank. The drip pan may be readily re moved when the cover plate is swung back and access to the tank through the opening is thereby afforded for filling purposes. To lock the parts, the cover plate 24 is moved back upon the ring into the flanged member 40 and the padlock 39 applied to the two eye studs 34, 38.
In the modified form of the invention, illustrated in Figs. '6 to 8, inclusive, the grid or grate 19 is made separate from the drip pan or bottom plate 14 and both the grid or grate 19 and the cover 24 are hinged to the flanged ring 5 to swing in a vertical plane. The hinge connnection, as shown, comprises ears 5 formed on the ring 5 and ears 19, 24, formed respectively on the grid 19 and cover 24, and a pivot pin 25 which extends through said ears and is headed on the outside thereof.

The handle 22 of the measuring stick or gauge 21 is notched as seen in Fig. 8 and one f of the ribs 19 of the grid 19 is so positioned that when the grid is swung down into place, said rib l9 enters the notch of the handle 22 and prevents removal of the measuring stick, except when the grid is unlocked and raised.
It is to be noticed that the cover in each form of the invention illustrated, covers the bolts, screws or rivets that fasten the ring to the tank. This arrangement prevents the device from being removed from the tank when the parts are locked. Obviously, the drip pipe may be dispensed with and the cover may be made solid in place of forming it with the hole for said drip pipe. Moreover, the grid or grate plate may be removed to leave a large opening for filling purposes. The parts are simple, easily assembled and repair. When the cover is locked, access to the interior of the tank is impossible and its contents cannot be disturbed. The cover, shown in the modified form, may be unlocked during working hours, and the grid alone locked, thereby permitting the cover to be swung back to permit receptacles to be placed on the grid when filling them. The measuring stick being locked in place, no opening is presented through which any of the contents may be removed except through the screen and then only by destroying the screen or invertin the entire tank.

We claim as-new and desire to secure by Letters Patent: v
1. In combination with'a tank having an opening therein, of a drip pan ring in said opening, securing means for fastening said ring to the tank, a grid in said ring, a cover hinged to said ring and covering said ring astening means, and locking means for locking said cover on said ring.
2. In combination with a tank having an opening therein, of a drip pan ring in said opening, securing means for fastening said ring to the tank, a grid in said ring, having a hole for the reception of a measuring stick, a measuring stick extending through said opening and having a head covering said opening, a cover hlll ed to said ring and covering said ring astening means, and locking means for locking said cover on said rin In combination with a tank having an opening therein, of a drip pan ring in said opening, a grid, and a cover hingedly secured to said ring on a horizontal axis, whereby said grid and cover may be swung in a vertical plane, and a single lock for locking both the grid and cover on said ring.
4. In combination with a tank having an opening therein, of a flanged drip pan ring in said opening, a drip pan supported in said flang'ed ring, a measuring stick extending through a hole in said drip pan and having a head resting thereon, a grid and a cover hingedly connected to said ring, said grid having a web overlying said head of the measuring stick, and means for locking said grid to said ring independently of the cover.
