Be it .known that I, HARRY U.
and State of lillinois, have invented certain new and useful improvements in an Enten-k sible (lurtain Roller; and do hereby declare that the following is a full,"clea1', and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying` drawings, and tothe numerals of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification. n
This invention relates to 'an extensible curtainroller andl particularly to an extensible roller -for vestibule curtains for `passenger cars which is ordinarily spring actuated to automatically vwind Said curtains thereon..
On account of the varying distance between the brackets on which curtain rollers are sirable that these rollers durably co`n-' structed and that meansbe provided for securely locking same in adjusted position.
It is an important object therefore of this invention to provide an` eXtensible curtain roller of durable construction which may be conveniently and securely position. i
It is also an important `object of this invention to provide a telescopic curtain roller which may be adjusted` longitudinallyand which is locked in ladj usted position by means frictionally engaging the inner telescopic portion.
@ther and further important object-sy of vthis invention will lbe apparent from the disclosures in the specification and the accom-k panying drawings. y i
The invention in a `preferred form) is .shown in tbe drawings and hereinafter more .fully described.
On the drawings :v
Figure 1 is ,a vview .in elevation of the` eX#v tensible curtain roller of this invention with a curtain thereon.
Figure 2'is a fragmentary elevation the curtain roller. l
Figure 3 is a section on the line 3-3 of Figure 2.
Figure i is a fragmentary section line 4 4 of `Figure 3.
As shown on the drawings:
The extensible curtainv roller of this inon the locked in adjusted yvention ordinarily'comprises telescopic "cyl hicieron, a citizen ofthe United States, and va resident j of the city of Chicago', in .the county of Cook portion 3 affording.allongitudinalslot it' and horizontally.y to formypflanges 5; as clearlj7 shown in FiguresBand ffaid flanges extendginwardlytoward the innerface of -f portion 2l`but at no 4point' contact said innerl face. j Means "are provided vfor locking' the telescopic portions l and 2 in adjusted position. For this purposea countersunk: aperture isprovided in Vthe portion Vl above the slot f4 and' engagedinsaid aperture is a machine screw,k 6` vwhich extends-downwardly through the slot 4 and is engaged through a threaded aperture in a rectangular plate 7 whichfis adapted toengage the underside of the iianges 5. Said plate 7 engages thegunv.der'surface of said flanges 5 but does notez( tend beyondthe edges ofthe same and does not contact the inner wallsof` the member 2 when in adjusted "position, it is of course apparent from the foregoing that the memf bers 1 and 2 are locked in adjusted position Y f by simply tightening the screw 6 whereby j the plate 7 is drawn upwardly againstl the flanges jan'd frictionally engages the same.
- /Vhile the members land 2.are heldtightly together by the tightening of the-screw 6,;
- and thefdrawin'g thereon; of the'plat-e' vthere no wedgingactionand no distortion vor p expansion vof the inner'member'2. The head of the screw 6 is'preferablyvrounded sok that i when it is engaged in the countersunk aperte ture'in the member 1 it'does'not makev an ob` l lstruction on theoutside fof the? curtain roller. Integral internal ridges 8' andy 9 are i. formed on vthe members 1 and 2 respectivelj'f` the edge lof a curtain 11;th'ereina.nd lsecure-'- the curtain upon the roller;
The curtain roller is ordinarily provided.
with the usual spring arrangement whereby j `the curtain-is'automatically wound thereonJ j y 105 no part'of this invention it neednot be `delir but sineethis spring. arrangement constitutes j and engagedin' the Y groove `formed by thel 'l l ridge `8 is-a rod orlwire l()l which aets'to loclr` i y this invenlicI yrange without departing from the principles of this invention and l therefore dor not pur- 'pose limiting` `the patent granted otherwise than necessitated by the prior art.
l claim as my invention: i
l. iin extensible curtain roller comprisinga pair the inner i'iortion having' a longitudinal slot therein, the wnllsni said inner tubo being turned inward adjacent the edges of said slot to iorni inwardly extending;v thrust receiving ineans, flanges integral with said inwardly extending meanasaid flanges being perpen dicular to said means, and a clamping device vincludingr a aart ada ated `to Contact said flanges and a part adapted to Contact the of tubular telescoping vportions,
insegna outer tubular iliortion7 saidclalnping device exerting;` a pressure against said flanges to create a thrust in said thrust receiving means to cause said inner and outer tubular portions to beelainjjed together te holdrthe roller at the selectedlength.
2. An extensible curtain roller Comprising` a pair ofy telescopic portions, the inner one of said portions having two inwardly extending members' spaced apart, and ineans extending through the space between said members for clamping the portions together, saidinwardly extending' members beingin planes substantially parallel to the lineA of action of said clamping` ineens.
vln testimony whereof l have hereunto subscribed. my naine in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
